General Concept Inclusion (GCIs) absorption algorithms have shown to play an important role in classical Description Logics (DLs) reasoners, as they allow to transform GCIs into simpler forms to which apply specialised inference rules, resulting in an important performance gain. In this work, we develop a first absorption algorithm for fuzzy DLs, and evaluate it over some ontologies.

Fuzzy Description Logics (DLs) are a formalism for the representation of structured knowledge that is imprecise or vague by nature. In fuzzy DLs, restricting to a finite set of degrees of truth has proved to be useful, both for theoretical and practical reasons. In this paper, we propose finite fuzzy DLs as a generalization of existing approaches. We assume a finite totally ordered set of linguistic terms or labels, which is very useful in practice since expert knowledge is usually expressed using linguistic terms. Then, we consider fuzzy DLs based on any smooth t-norm defined over this set. Initially we focus on the finite fuzzy DL, studying some logical properties, and showing the decidability of the logic by presenting a reasoning preserving reduction to the classical case. Finally, we extend our logic in two directions: by considering non-smooth t-norms and by considering additional DL constructors. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Classical ontologies are not suitable to represent imprecise or vague information, which has led to several extensions using non-classical logics. In particular, several fuzzy extensions have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we present the fuzzy ontology reasoner DeLorean, the first to support a fuzzy extension of OWL 2. We discuss how to use it for fuzzy ontology representation and reasoning, and describe some implementation details and optimization techniques. An empirical evaluation demonstrates that these optimizations considerably improve the performance of the reasoner. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The ubiquitous learning is used as a means of supporting teaching processes by means of the use of mobile and wireless communication technologies, sensors and tracking mechanisms / tracking, working together to integrate students with their environment. The process of clinical learning for nursing students may be the main cause of increased stress on teachers and students, given the problematic nature of the patients. This paper presents an ubiquitous learning system based on active learning methodology that provides context awareness support for nursing courses. An experiment with control and experimental groups with nursing students demonstrates that for theoretical concepts to be successfully transferred into practice, the context of practice needs to be considered.

With the advent and rapid spread of microblogging services, web information management finds a new research topic. Although classical information retrieval methods and techniques help search engines and services to present an adequate precision in lower recall levels (top-k results), the constantly evolving information needs of microblogging users demand a different approach, which has to be adapted to the dynamic nature of On-line Social Networks (OSNs). In this work, we use Twitter as microblogging service, aiming to investigate the query expansion provision that can be extracted from large graphs, and compare it against classical query expansion methods that require mainly prior knowledge, such as browsing history records or access and management of search logs. We provide a direct comparison with mainstream media services, such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing, NBC and Reuters, while we also evaluate our approach by subjective comparisons in respect to the Google Hot Searches service. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Content providers are often accused of free riding by exploiting the network to distribute their content without sharing their revenues with the network providers. In order to assess the correctness of such an accusation, we set up a game-theoretical model, where content providers releasing their contents for free and under the payment of a usage-based charge are both present. In this model, the network provider charges both content providers a usage-based charge (network charge) as well. The network provider and the paid content provider act as the players, using the respective retail prices as strategic leverages. Both the cases where network charges are set by the network provider and by a regulatory authority are examined. The Nash equilibrium is determined in a closed form. In a typical scenario, the solution represented by zero network charges maximizes both the network provider's revenues and the social welfare: free riding for content providers appears as the best choice under both the viewpoints of the selfish network provider and the regulatory authority.

Secure image encryption based on a chua chaotic noise generator

This paper presents a secure image cryptography telecom system based on a Chua's circuit chaotic noise generator. A chaotic system based on synchronised Master-Slave Chua's circuits has been used as a chaotic true random number generator (CTRNG). Chaotic systems present unpredictable and complex behaviour. This characteristic, together with the dependence on the initial conditions as well as the tolerance of the circuit components, make CTRNGs ideal for cryptography. In the proposed system, the transmitter mixes an input image with chaotic noise produced by a CTRNG. Using thresholding techniques, the chaotic signal is converted to a true random bit sequence. The receiver must be able to reproduce exactly the same chaotic noise in order to subtract it from the received signal. This becomes possible with synchronisation between the two Chua's circuits: through the use of specific techniques, the trajectory of the Slave chaotic system can be bound to that of the Master circuit producing (almost) identical behaviour. Additional blocks have been used in order to make the system highly parameterisable and robust against common attacks. The whole system is simulated in Matlab. Simulation results demonstrate satisfactory performance, as well as, robustness against cryptanalysis. The system works with both greyscale and colour jpg images. © 2013 Kavala Institute of Technology.

This paper presents a mathematical technique for modeling the generation of Grid-solutions employing a Case based reasoning system (CBR). Roughly speaking, an intelligent system that tries to be adapted to highly dynamic environment needs an efficient integration of high-level processes (deliberative and time-costly) within low-level (reactive, faster but poorer in quality) processes. The most relevant aspect of our current approach is that, unexpectedly, the performance of the CBR-system do not get worse any time that it retrieves worse cases in situations even when it has enough time to generate better solutions. We concentrate on formal aspects of the proposed Grid-CBR system without establishing which should be the most adequate procedure in a subsequent implementation stage. The advantage of the presented scheme is that it does not depend on neither the particular problem nor a concrete environment. It consists in a formal approach that only requires, on one hand, local information about the averaged-time spent by the system in obtaining a solution and, on the other hand, an estimation about their temporal restrictions. The potential use of industry standard technologies to implement such a Grid-enabled CBR system is discussed here too. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The industry that designs and promotes advertising products in television channels is constantly growing. For effective market analysis and contract validation, various commercial tracker systems are employed. However, these systems mostly rely on heuristics and, since commercial broadcasting varies significantly, are often inaccurate. This paper proposes a commercial tracker system based on the Block Operator Context Scanning (Block - OCS) algorithm, which is both accurate and fast. The proposed method, similar to coarse-to-fine strategies, skips a large portion of the image sequences by focusing only on Regions of Interest. In this paper, a video matching algorithm is also proposed, which compares image sequences using time sliding windows of frames. Experimental results showed 100% accuracy and 50% speed increase compared to traditional block-based processing methods. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The provision of publicly available Open Data targets to provide transparency in several public sector decisions and actions. However, this information is served massively and in different forms - mostly due to different bureaucratic procedures- while its diffusion does not occur at regular or at least generally predictable time intervals. Thus, even though the information is available by the involved public sectors and enterprises. citizens are overwhelmed from the size/inconsistency of the information they deal with. In this paper, we present a publicly accessible Web point (***/), which aims to promote transparency and enhance citizen awareness regarding public spending in Greece. The information is based on intelligent and semantic real-time processed open data that are derived from the open API of "Diavgeia" (Clarity) Program (***/en/) and TAXIS - Taxation Information System (***/), while it is served through easily consumed visualization charts and diagrams. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
