Recently, the Internet of Things (IoT) has gained widespread popularity, yet its security remains a critical challenge due to the massive amount of information generated by connected devices. While encryption algorithms are commonly employed to protect this information, they are susceptible to various attacks. This paper introduces a novel encryption method to enhance data security in the Consumer IoT domain. The proposed approach combines DNA-inspired encryption with blockchain technology. The DNA encryption algorithm is utilized for the primary encryption phase, followed by the secure handling of encrypted data using blockchain. To evaluate the proposed scheme, a comparison is made with traditional techniques such as RSA, DNA, and a hybrid of both, considering encryption and decryption times. Simulations are conducted using MATLAB software, and an analytical study is performed to assess the performance of the suggested scheme.

Human-computer interactions require systems that work out of the box without requiring lots of data to adapt to a new task or user. In this research, we address low resource spoken language understanding tasks such as named entity recognition (NER), intent recognition (IR), and slot filling (SF) to research how a pretrained model can be modified for a new task, then finetuned with few labelled data. We propose extending the Whisper model with task-specific modules for NER, SF, and IR, leveraging a Markov network as output structure. We develop a novel approach to finetuning by removing irrelevant weights and reorganizing the embeddings to drastically improve the performance in a low-resource setting. Our approach outperforms previous models without external language models and demonstrates effective transfer learning, even with very limited training data. The models exhibit a small footprint, making them suitable for applications requiring robustness, few-shot learning, and efficiency.

The Internet of Things is revolutionizing how in-terconnected devices communicate and interact within several applications, ranging from health monitoring to smart city development. Yet, the data management in these systems is challenged by imprecision and noise inherent in Internet of Things environments. Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems have emerged as a solution, aptly handling the uncertainty and complexity in decision-making processes these environments present. However, current Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems implementations in Internet of Things often face limitations due to their ad-hoc nature and heavy reliance on specific hardware, thereby restricting their application in diverse and evolving Internet of Things infrastructures. In response to these challenges, we present JFML-IoT, an innovative open-source library that bridges the gap between Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems and Internet of Things devices. JFML-IoT extends the JFML library, implementing the IEEE Std 1855-2016 for Fuzzy Markup Language and adapting its capabilities to the unique demands of the Internet of Things paradigm. This library not only facilitates remote Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems deployment but also excels in generating source code for Internet of Things microcontrollers, thus enabling a new level of hardware abstraction and versatility. Our approach significantly enhances the scalability, flexibility, and integration of Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems within varied Internet of Things systems. To demonstrate the practical application and effectiveness of JFML-IoT, we conducted a case study in a real-world environment. This case study showcases how JFML-IoT can improve data management in Internet of Things systems, offering scalable, efficient, and adaptable solutions that are critical in modern Internet of Things applications.

Smart cities have been a very active research area in the past 20 years, while continuously adapting to new technological advancements and keeping up with the times regarding sustainability and climate change. In this context, there have been numerous proposals to expand the scope of smart cities, focusing on resilience and sustainability, among other aspects, resulting in terms like smart sustainable cities. At the same time, there is an ongoing discussion regarding the degree in which smart cities put people at their centre. In this work, we argue toward expanding the current smart city definition by integrating the circular economy as one of its central pillars and adopting the term smart (and) circular city. We discuss the ways a smart and circular city encompasses both sustainability and smartness in an integral manner, while also being well-positioned to foster novel business activity and models and helping to place citizens at the heart of the smart city. In this sense, we also argue that previous research in smart cities and technologies, such as those related to Industry 4.0, can serve as a cornerstone to implement circular economy activities within cities, at a scale that exceeds current activities that are based on more conventional approaches. We also outline current open challenges in this domain and research questions that still need to be addressed.

Trust and security are critical deployment require-ments for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks. A recent protocol, called TRUTH, integrates security mechanisms for authentication and privacy alongside a Dempster-Shafer based trust model, to assess the trustworthiness of collected data. We analyze this protocol and show that it does not comply with the implementation requirements of the 5G standard, and that flaws in the identification of involved parties hinder its adoption by 5G devices. We show how to fix this protocol and tailor it for the specific 5G implementation constraints, by enhancing its computational and communication performance. Finally, we show how to prove the security of this fixed protocol (TRUTH +) using the Tamarin automated verification tool. © 2024 IEEE.

The UAV-mounted base station has been integrated into 5G and beyond to provide communication in an emergency when conventional systems fail due to some reason. Moreover, it is also used in coverage enhancement and for other strategic purposes. In this work, we have considered a MIMO-OFDM based UAV system that is inclined to fast-fading channels due to the continuous motion of UAVs. Due to the mobility of UAVs, there is a frequency and timing offset which must be estimated for proper and seamless communication. For that purpose, we have proposed a data-aided maximum likelihood-based scheme that efficiently estimates the carrier frequency and timing offset. Results show that our algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art system in terms of MSE.

Cache management is an important component in any network and it has even more importance in the Future Internet Architectures (FIAs) including Named Data Networking (NDN), because the caches play the key role in reducing the overall network latency and scalability. In this paper, we discuss the functionality of cache management in NDN, its types as well as its importance for the NDN architecture. In addition, we propose a machine learning-empowered cache management and interests predication for NDN to only preserve the cache only to the secure and really needed data. Our proposal uses Apriori algorithm which is supervised learning algorithm to find the association rules and then to recommend the next requested data. Implementation and experiments on real data traffic depicted that the network’ performance and its influence on the cache increased by 3.2% for two content store sizes of 20 and 40 MB. In addition, a larger cache size of 80 MB shows an increase of the cache hit ratio reaching 90% and hence, clearly reducing the network latency.

With the increasing focus on healthcare, especially real-time analytics and self-diagnosis, the interest in capturing real-time patient data has increased significantly for both physicians and patients. The development of smart devices that can collect data such as blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar level, etc., has greatly contributed to improving individual health management capabilities. However, these advances also, bring challenges such as concerns over safety, reliability, and accurate diagnosis. Problems often arise, especially when exchanging information and transmitting data. To overcome these challenges, this project uses blockchain technology to improve data transmission and security. This study explores the use of blockchain-based internet solutions by integrating blockchain into smart health-care. Additionally, the digital twin concept is used to improve diagnosis by simulating the effects of drugs on virtual objects. Based on the results of these simulations, physicians can make informed decisions about appropriate medications and accurately assess a patient's condition. A health monitoring system using digital twin technology and blockchain can be implemented to securely organize the collection of user information and enable accurate diagnosis. This integration ensures secure storage and transmission of your data and improves your health outcomes. In this paper, we study the integrating blockchain technology with Digital Twin for patient health monitoring. We showcase an interface connected to the blockchain database, specifically designed for doctors to review patient health records through patient wallet address and determine the normalcy of the patient's heart rate based on their medical data. Additionally, the interface allows doctors to predict the effect of medication on the patient's heart rate and blood pressure.

One of the biggest challenges in learning from data streams is adapting the classification model to new data. Due to the evolving nature of data streams, they are subject to a phenomenon known as concept drift that makes previously learned knowledge and model outdated. Therefore, concept drift must be efficiently detected in order to adapt the classification model. While there exists a plethora of drift detectors, with different mechanisms, selecting the most suitable for a new stream is a difficult task, since apriori knowledge may not be available and changes over time can affect the performance of the detector. This paper proposes a framework that exploits statistical and temporal meta-features from sliding windows to dynamically recommend a suitable drift detector in real-time for unseen chunks of streams according to its properties using Meta-Learning. We performed experiments on 10 real-world data streams and 18 synthetic generated data streams that were subject to concept drift and class imbalance in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed framework. Experiments exposed that the proposed approach was able to enhance the concept drift detection in a variety of scenarios demonstrating robustness to class imbalance and the advantages of dynamically selecting the drift detector.
