In multi-room environments, modelling the sound propagation is complex due to the coupling of rooms and diverse source-receiver positions. A common scenario is when the source and the receiver are in different rooms without a clear line of sight. For such source-receiver configurations, an initial increase in energy is observed, referred to as the "fade-in" of reverberation. Based on recent work of representing inhomogeneous and anisotropic reverberation with common decay times, this work proposes an extended parametric model that enables the modelling of the fade-in phenomenon. The method performs fitting on the envelopes, instead of energy decay functions, and allows negative amplitudes of decaying exponentials. We evaluate the method on simulated and measured multi-room environments, where we show that the proposed approach can now model the fade-ins that were unrealisable with the previous method. © 2024 Audio Engineering Society. Recently, the Internet of Things (IoT) has gained widespread popularity, yet its security remains a critical challenge due to the massive amount of information generated by connected devices. While encryption algorithms are commonly employed to protect this information, they are susceptible to various attacks. This paper introduces a novel encryption method to enhance data security in the Consumer IoT domain. The proposed approach combines DNA-inspired encryption with blockchain technology. The DNA encryption algorithm is utilized for the primary encryption phase, followed by the secure handling of encrypted data using blockchain. To evaluate the proposed scheme, a comparison is made with traditional techniques such as RSA, DNA, and a hybrid of both, considering encryption and decryption times. Simulations are conducted using MATLAB software, and an analytical study is performed to assess the performance of the suggested scheme. © 2024 IEEE.

The UAV-mounted base station has been integrated into 5G and beyond to provide communication in an emergency when conventional systems fail due to some reason. Moreover, it is also used in coverage enhancement and for other strategic purposes. In this work, we have considered a MIMO-OFDM based UAV system that is inclined to fast-fading channels due to the continuous motion of UAVs. Due to the mobility of UAVs, there is a frequency and timing offset which must be estimated for proper and seamless communication. For that purpose, we have proposed a data-aided maximum likelihood-based scheme that efficiently estimates the carrier frequency and timing offset. Results show that our algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art system in terms of MSE. © 2023 IEEE.

Cache management is an important component in any network and it has even more importance in the Future Internet Architectures (FIAs) including Named Data Networking (NDN), because the caches play the key role in reducing the overall network latency and scalability. In this paper, we discuss the functionality of cache management in NDN, its types as well as its importance for the NDN architecture. In addition, we propose a machine learning-empowered cache management and interests predication for NDN to only preserve the cache only to the secure and really needed data. Our proposal uses Apriori algorithm which is supervised learning algorithm to find the association rules and then to recommend the next requested data. Implementation and experiments on real data traffic depicted that the network' performance and its influence on the cache increased by 3.2% for two content store sizes of 20 and 40 MB. In addition, a larger cache size of 80 MB shows an increase of the cache hit ratio reaching 90% and hence, clearly reducing the network latency. © 2023 IEEE.

With the increasing focus on healthcare, especially real-time analytics and self-diagnosis, the interest in capturing real-time patient data has increased significantly for both physicians and patients. The development of smart devices that can collect data such as blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar level, etc., has greatly contributed to improving individual health management capabilities. However, these advances also, bring challenges such as concerns over safety, reliability, and accurate diagnosis. Problems often arise, especially when exchanging information and transmitting data. To overcome these challenges, this project uses blockchain technology to improve data transmission and security. This study explores the use of blockchain-based internet solutions by integrating blockchain into smart health-care. Additionally, the digital twin concept is used to improve diagnosis by simulating the effects of drugs on virtual objects. Based on the results of these simulations, physicians can make informed decisions about appropriate medications and accurately assess a patient's condition. A health monitoring system using digital twin technology and blockchain can be implemented to securely organize the collection of user information and enable accurate diagnosis. This integration ensures secure storage and transmission of your data and improves your health outcomes. In this paper, we study the integrating blockchain technology with Digital Twin for patient health monitoring. We showcase an interface connected to the blockchain database, specifically designed for doctors to review patient health records through patient wallet address and determine the normalcy of the patient's heart rate based on their medical data. Additionally, the interface allows doctors to predict the effect of medication on the patient's heart rate and blood pressure. © 2023 IEEE.

Wearable and smartphone-based emotion recognition (WER) remains a challenging setting in affective computing, due to the notorious difficulty and bias associated with in-the-wild label collection. The high inter-and intra-subject emotional variability motivates us to explore WER modeling through graph node classification in a limited resources learning scheme powered by Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) graph masking augmentation tasks. We employ a subgraph sampling approach during training, utilizing labeled and unlabeled data, along with supervised, semi-supervised, and SSL mechanisms in a multi-task inductive graph neural network architecture. Our evaluations on K-EmoPhone through leave-one-group-out cross-validation in the binary arousal and valence tasks yield average accuracy gains of 4.3% and 7.8%, compared to the full resource setting, utilizing only 20% and 25% of the labels, respectively. Our model analysis sheds light on the relation of SSL graph augmentations to emotional arousal and valence and justifies the approach of SSL-driven subgraph training for in-the-wild WER. © 2025 IEEE.

Investigations after school shooting incidents have shown that a large number of attackers leave behind texts in the form of online posts or handwritten documents, mostly produced before and leading up to the attack. This raises the possibility that extracting indicators from the texts of previous school shooters could aid in identifying warning signs of a potential future school shooting. For this, a collection of 3028 texts written by 26 distinct school shooters leading up to their attacks was collected and annotated. Analysis of this dataset reveals similar psycholinguistic and statistical traits between the texts of school shooters, separating them from texts written by non-shooters. Several large language models were employed to test their predictive power on the school shooter dataset. Although tested on a small number of perpetrators, the results of the best-performing voting-based classifier are promising, beating previous similar studies' performance when screening for school shooter texts and achieving an F2-score of 0.966. © 2025 IEEE.

This work explores personalities of individuals at risk of Islamist radicalisation. Previous studies have successfully identified radicalised individuals on social media. However, a more prophylactic approach to counter radical communities would be to detect individuals prior to getting radicalised. A manually annotated dataset of 15,195 tweets from 259 persons believed to be at risk of radicalisation was classified according to Big 5 personality traits and compared to the same number of non-radical users. The results show that risk users can successfully be identified and exhibit distributional differences compared to non-radical users for Extraversion and Openness. © 2025 IEEE.

Smart cities have been a very active research area in the past 20 years, while continuously adapting to new technological advancements and keeping up with the times regarding sustainability and climate change. In this context, there have been numerous proposals to expand the scope of smart cities, focusing on resilience and sustainability, among other aspects, resulting in terms like smart sustainable cities. At the same time, there is an ongoing discussion regarding the degree in which smart cities put people at their centre. In this work, we argue toward expanding the current smart city definition by integrating the circular economy as one of its central pillars and adopting the term smart (and) circular city. We discuss the ways a smart and circular city encompasses both sustainability and smartness in an integral manner, while also being well-positioned to foster novel business activity and models and helping to place citizens at the heart of the smart city. In this sense, we also argue that previous research in smart cities and technologies, such as those related to Industry 4.0, can serve as a cornerstone to implement circular economy activities within cities, at a scale that exceeds current activities that are based on more conventional approaches. We also outline current open challenges in this domain and research questions that still need to be addressed.
