We present a factor analysis method that accounts for possible temporal misalignment of the factor loadings across the population of samples. Our main hypothesis is that the data contains a subset of variables with similar but delayed profiles obeying a consistent precedence ordering relationship. Our model is motivated by the difficulty of gene expression analysis across subjects who have common patterns of immune response but show different onset times after a uniform innoculation time of a viral pathogen. The proposed method is based on a linear model with additional degrees of freedom that account for each subject's inherent delays. We present an algorithm to fit this model in a totally unsupervised manner and demonstrate its effectiveness on extracting gene expression factors affecting host response using a flu-virus human challenge study dataset. © 2010 IEEE.

Content providers are often accused of free riding by exploiting the network to distribute their content without sharing their revenues with the network providers. In order to assess the correctness of such an accusation, we set up a game-theoretical model, where content providers releasing their contents for free and under the payment of a usage-based charge are both present. In this model, the network provider charges both content providers a usage-based charge (network charge) as well. The network provider and the paid content provider act as the players, using the respective retail prices as strategic leverages. Both the cases where network charges are set by the network provider and by a regulatory authority are examined. The Nash equilibrium is determined in a closed form. In a typical scenario, the solution represented by zero network charges maximizes both the network provider's revenues and the social welfare: free riding for content providers appears as the best choice under both the viewpoints of the selfish network provider and the regulatory authority.

In public vs. private solutions (i.e. Cloud vs. In-house, or leased vs. Owned) for storage, both alternatives have their pros and cons. Cloud storage can easily adapt to the company needs, but exhibits a higher unit cost than in-house solutions. On the other hand, if the company relies on its own storage equipment, it must periodically purchase it on the basis of forecasts, which may prove imprecise and lead to idle equipment. In this paper, we propose a comparative evaluation tool for the two procurement approaches, where the cloud can play the role of either exclusive storage medium or supplement to in-house equipment (in the case of underestimation of storage needs). The tool considers the impact of equipment acquisition intervals and forecast accuracy over a long time horizon, adopting a Geometric Brownian Motion model for the evolution of storage capacity needs, it can be employed as a decision support tool for procurement decisions.

WSRNet: Joint spotting and recognition of handwritten words

In this work, we present a unified model that can handle both Keyword Spotting and Word Recognition with the same network architecture. The proposed network is comprised of a non-recurrent CTC branch and a Seq2Seq branch that is further augmented with an Autoencoding module. The related joint loss leads to a boost in recognition performance, while the Seq2Seq branch is used to create efficient word representations. We show how to further process these representations with binarization and a retraining scheme to provide compact and highly efficient descriptors, suitable for keyword spotting. Numerical results validate the usefulness of the proposed architecture, as our method outperforms the previous state-of-the-art in keyword spotting, and provides results in the ballpark of the leading methods for word recognition. Large combinational circuits need to be partitioned in order to manage scarce resources on k-LUT based FPGAs . Circuit partitioning has multiple applications in VLSI design. One of the most common is that of dividing combinational circuits (usually large ones) that will not fit on a single package among a number of packages. Partitioning is of practical importance for k- LUT based FPGA circuit implementation. In this work is presented a multilevel multi-resource partitioning algorithm for partitioning large combinational circuits using cone-clusters in order to efficiently map existing and commercially available k -LUT based FPGAs packages.

In this paper we address the Phase Retrieval problem, which aims to recover the phase of the Fourier transform of a signal when only magnitude measurements are available. Following recent developments in Phase Retrieval, the problem can be transformed into a convex semidefinite programming optimization problem, which can be solved using Matrix Completion techniques. In this paper the acquisition process is modeled using a likelihood function, which splits the original problem into two convex optimization problems, and alternates between the solution of each of them. To relate both convex problems we introduce a heuristic, which results in fast convergence of the proposed method.

This paper proposes the V/sub B5.2/ interface as a basis for the definition of the generic Iu interface. The architecture of the emerging network that incorporates a third generation mobile system (UMTS) service node (SN), and any kind of access network (AN) technology, fixed or wireless, over the proposed V/sub B5.2/ oriented generic interface, is presented. The mapping of the call/connection control (CC) related messages, needed for the manipulation of connections, with the involvement of the broadband bearer connection control protocol (B-BCCP), is formed in a generic approach. The paper concludes pointing out possible enhancements to the existing V/sub B5.2/ interface, and mainly to the B-BCCP, in order to play effectively the role as a candidate of the Iu generic interface.

Passive Millimeter Wave Images currently used to detect hidden threats suffer from low resolution, blur, and a very low signal-to-noise-ratio. These shortcomings render threat detection, both visual and automatic, very challenging. Furthermore, due to the presence of very severe noise, most of the blind image restoration methods fail to recover the system blurring kernel from a single image. In this paper we propose a robust Bayesian multiframe blind image deconvolution method that approximates the posterior distribution of the blur by a Dirichlet distribution. We show that this approach naturally incorporates the non-negativity and normalization constraints for the blur and cope well with the image noise. The performance of the proposed method is tested on both synthetic and real images.

Mesh Generation for Atmospheric Boundary Layer Simulation in Wind Farm Design and Management

We propose a new automatic procedure to generate hybrid meshes to simulate turbulent flows for wind farm design and management. In particular, numerical modeling of wind farms involves a RANS simulation of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) flow and modeling the turbines using the actuator disc theory. Therefore, the generated meshes have to fulfill several geometrical requirements to answer to the different modeling features. They must: capture the topography features that can influence the wind flow; have a boundary layer close to the terrain to resolve the ABL; be conformally adapted to the disc (turbine) to simulate the turbine effects on the wind flow; be adapted around the disc to capture the wake effect; and present a smooth mesh size transition around the disc to conform the mesh size of the ABL mesh, in which the turbines are immersed. We highlight that the mesh generation procedure is fully automatic once given the mesh size, a topography description, the wind inflow direction, a list of turbine insertion points, and the turbine models. To illustrate the applicability of the proposed procedure, we present two wind farm cases: an offshore wind farm mesh where we illustrate the computed wind deficit, and an onshore farm assimilating real topography data.

We present a live cross-lingual system capable of producing shallow semantic annotations of natural language sentences for 51 languages at this time. The domain of the input sentences is in principle unconstrained. The system uses single training data (in English) for all the languages. The resulting semantic annotations are therefore consistent across different languages. We use CoNLL Semantic Role Labeling training data and Universal dependencies as the basis for the system. The system is publicly available and supports processing data in batches;therefore, it can be easily used by the community for research tasks. © 2019 Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL).
