The user observed latency of retrieving Web documents is one of limiting factors while using the Internet as an information data source. Prefetching became important technique to reduce the average Web access latency. Existing prefetching methods are based predominantly on URL graphs. They use the graphical nature of HTTP links to determine the possible paths through a hypertext system. Although the URL graph-based approaches are effective in the prefetching of frequently accessed documents, few of them can pre-fetch those URLs that are rarely visited. In our paper we aim to propose a new prefetching algorithm that would increase the efficiency of Web prefetching and that will embody the new demands for Web personalisation and Web search assistance. The aim of the research is to design a system for web page prefetching. The system should use user's link path history in combination with the semantic path history. To enable this, semantically annotated web pages are necessary. We cannot rely on the web documents' creators thus one part of the work must be the design and implementation of simple annotator based on WordNet just for purposes of our research.

The paper focuses on a system and an appropriate controller concept for advanced air management of a turbo-charged passenger car diesel engine. The proposed air management system consists of a VTG turbocharger and two separate Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) loops, a cooled or non-cooled high-pressure EGR (HP EGR) and a cooled low-pressure EGR (LP EGR) loop. In the LP EGR loop, the exhaust gas leaving the particulate filter is mixed with fresh air just in front of the compressor inlet. A main model (MM) was created in Simulink to design a Nonlinear Model-based Predictive Controller (NMPC). This model is mainly founded on physical equations, allowing easy adaptation to various systems. MM is a detailed model which was developed first and which is also used for software-in-the-loop (SIL) tests of the controller with the simulated engine. At the beginning of the diesel engine test stage, stationary measurements were conducted to examine the influence of variations of the EGR rate, boost pressure, fresh air mass, etc. These tests were carried out in an open loop without an integrated controller for the air management system. The results were used to optimize the Simulink models. As to the controller concept, a model-based predictive approach is briefly presented which uses a simplified simulation model (a reduced version of a more detailed MM) with real-time capability of the complete air path for providing the system states. For the prediction, an additional, simplified model of the engine's air path system with real-time capability is used. In this paper the main emphasis is on the modeling and the building of the SIL-environment for developing and testing the NMPC. In addition, the controller structure and simulation and measurement results of steady and unsteady tests are presented and analyzed. Copyright © 2007 SAE International.

Transmitting variable-length network layer (IP) packets over satellite links with fixed frame lengths (or lengths depending on the ACM transmission mode) requires (IP) encapsulation. For DVB-S links with fixed-size 188-byte TS packets, MPE and ULE encapsulations are available. DVB-S2 provides a compatibility mode to pack TS packets into the longer base band frames (BBFrames). Thus MPE and ULE are also available for S2, as well as a native generic stream encapsulation (GSE), avoiding the double overhead of TS and BBFrame encapsulation. The present paper gives a short overview on the available encapsulation protocols for DVB-S2, and then provides a mathematical efficiency calculation model for these encapsulations, in order to allow for performing theoretical efficiency simulations. Comparison graphs of the efficiency values are presented, using both the efficiency models and measurements from real satellite traffic.

The issue of user privacy is constantly brought to the spotlight since an ever increasing number of online services collects and processes personal information from users, in the context of personalized service provision. Although technology makes the collection of data easy, their protection against abuse is left to data protection legislation. However, the privacy requirements, other than being general and abstract terms to be regarded as legislature issues, should be brought down in the technological reality and carefully accounted for in devising technical solutions. In order to limit the disclosure and avoid the misuse of personal data, this paper discusses an architectural proposal for a middleware system that will enforce protection of user privacy through technical means. This goal is facilitated by a combination of a policy framework, a sensible interpretation of regulations into policies and the introduction of a privacy broker, named the Discreet Box.

In recent years, the amount of Internet accessible digital audiovisual media files has vastly increased. Therefore the need to describe the media (by way of metadata) has also increased significantly. MPEG-7 (finalized in 2001) provides a comprehensive and rich metadata standard for the description of multimedia content. Unfortunately, a standardized query format does not exist for MPEG-7, or other multimedia metadata. Such a standard would provide for communications between querying clients and databases, supporting cross-modal and cross-media retrieval. The lSO/lEC SC29WG11 committee decided therefore to contribute to this application space by adding such functionality as a new part of the MPEG-7 series of standards. In response to a Call for Proposals, six proposals were submitted. This paper describes the strengths of each proposal as well as the resulting draft standard for the MPEG-7 query format.

This paper deals with a mixed continuous-batch process, a pilot plant of our Lab, where both continuous decisions and scheduling take place. The interest of this contribution comes not only from the fact that it is a challenging control problem, but because problems with a similar structure are present in many industrial process. The paper describes the process, the instrumentation (classical analogical/discrete devices, Field Bus devices) and the global architecture of the pilot plant control (Distributed Control System DCS, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition SCADA, OPC communication, etc.). From a control point of view, it presents a brief description of control problem formulation in the framework of non-linear model predictive control, and a generic methodology to design this kind of predictive controllers. Finally it is presented the results of some real experiments. Copyright © 2006 IFAC.

Modern communication environments tend to be complex, dynamic and highly distributed. For the provIsion of messaging in such environments multiple entities, providing different functionalities and located remotely from each other, must cooperate in order to perform different tasks and provide different kind of information for the completion of the service provision Iifecycle. Within this paper we present an implementation analysis of the communication mechanism which was employed in a distributed brokerage framework for the provision of context aware personalized services. The paper focuses on the inter-broker communication mechanism which enables the transparent interaction between components located in different brokers. The mechanism was designed and implemented having in mind relevant requirements such as transparency, modularity and high availability. The design and implementation was based on web service practices and the SOAP protocol.

We present a browser extension to dynamically learn to filter unwanted images (such as advertisements or flashy graphics) based on minimal user feedback. To do so, we apply the weighted majority algorithm using pieces of the Uniform Resource Locators of such images as predictors. Experimental results tend to confirm that the accuracy of the predictions converges quickly to very high levels.
