The AGILE project is developing the next generation of development processes, and deploying a collaborative MDO design system, called the AGILE development framework (ADF). Naturally, such a system contains a lot of implicit assumptions on how things should be done and how to exploit different existing technologies. This collection of assumptions and technologies is labeled the ‘AGILE Paradigm’. The two main building blocks of this paradigm are the Collaborative Architecture and the Knowledge Architecture. In essence, these building blocks aim to support large, heterogeneous teams of experts in performing collaborative development in a streamlined and time-effective way. This paper has a focus on the definition of the Knowledge Architecture (KA) as a general conceptual framework which is independent of the aircraft-specific application in AGILE. The KA can be applied to perform collaborative automated design in large, heterogeneous teams for any complex system (e.g. aircraft, automobiles, wind farms). The KA is structured with a multi-level backbone: Development Process layer, Automated Design layer, Design Competence layer. A fourth transverse layer impacting all other layers is the Data & Schemas layer. Each layer has its own set of assumptions and technologies, but more importantly, interfaces between the levels have to be created in order to have a fully interconnected development process from each design competence up to the top-level business process. The hierarchical levels and interfaces are described in this paper as a generalized paradigm. In addition, four support platforms of the KA in the AGILE project are described in more detail: the development process environment, graph-based support in the design problem formu- lation, visualization of large, complex automated design processes, and design concepts formalizations. Diffraction of pulsed electromagnetic (EM) waves in a slot excited Fabry Perot type resonator antenna is studied analytically in the modified Kirchhoff approximation. Closed-form space-time expressions for the radiated EM fields are found using the Cagniard-DeHoop technique. Illustrative numerical examples are given.

Heterogeneity of structure can increase mechanical stability, stress resistance and resilience, biodiversity and many other functions and services of forest stands. That is why many silvicultural measures aim at enhancing structural diversity. However, the effectiveness and potential of structuring may depend on the site conditions. Here, we revealed how the stand structure is determined by site quality and results from site-dependent partitioning of growth and mortality among the trees. We based our study on 90 mature, even-aged, fully stocked monocultures of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) sampled in 21 countries along a productivity gradient across Europe. A mini-simulation study further analyzed the site-dependency of the interplay between growth and mortality and the resulting stand structure. The overarching hypothesis was that the stand structure changes with site quality and results from the site-dependent asymmetry of competition and ***, we show that Scots pine stands structure across Europe become more homogeneous with increasing site quality. The coefficient of variation and Gini coefficient of stem diameter and tree height continuously decreased, whereas Stand Density Index and stand basal area increased with site ***, we reveal a site-dependency of the growth distribution among the trees and the mortality. With increasing site index, the asymmetry of both competition and growth distribution increased and suggested, at first glance, an increase in stand heterogeneity. However, with increasing site index, mortality eliminates mainly small instead of all-sized trees, cancels the size variation and reduces the structural ***, we modelled the site-dependent interplay between growth partitioning and mortality. By scenario runs for different site conditions, we can show how the site-dependent structure at the stand level emerges from the asymmetric competition and mortality at the tree level and how the interplay changes

Apache Spark is commonly used as a big data analytical platform on powerful computer clusters, as it primarily employ the main computer memory for the evaluation. Our attempt adds self-organizing map software libraries onto a single big data analytical stack and is efficient and fast enough even on a standard single computer. This innovative approach brings the big data analysis to researchers with limited resources. Our genuine idea was experimentally confirmed and is described here. As a case study for our method we we used the available #Brexit data and the sentiment analysis of corresponding tweets and the correlation with the stock exchange data.

SHM systems have been under development for decades. Many technologies have been considered during these years (ultrasounds, optic fiber, Eddy current, electromagnetic, imaging, impedance measurements,) and many solutions for fault detection algorithms, types of sensors, techniques for conducting the tests, etc. have also been introduced. Even though the SHM technology is almost mature, just a few SHM experimental systems are frequently used. SHM systems usually focus on structures with no limitation on volume or weight. The SHM systems are still under test in applications for aircraft and wind generators, where the weight and volume is critical. One of the most applied technologies in SHM is the monitoring through surface ultrasonic waves or Lamb waves. The main advantages of this technique are the low power consumption of the sensors and the capability to cover large areas using few sensors. The ultrasound technique for SHM consists of a system composed of several modules: signal generators that provide waves at specific amplitude and frequency with enough power to drive a series of sensors;several parallel acquisition systems for the signals received at the transducers;a digital control system to synchronize the modules, perform calculations on the signals and determine the state of the structure;a communications system with a central node, which is critical when multiple structures are monitored;and, obviously, the piezoelectric transducers. All these modules must be embedded in a low volume system and show large capacities: high reliability, signal integrity, accuracy, speed of response, etc. Even more, the feeding of the system through the ambient energy leftovers (auto harvesting) is also set as target. This paper introduces the Structural Health Monitoring Ultrasound System, a system that gets SHM technology closer to the applications.

A novel autotuning procedure is presented through application to an industrial in-line pH control system. The procedure has three advantages over classical relay auto-tuners: experiment duration is very short (no need for limit-cycle convergence); all data is used for identification (instead of only peaks and switch instances); a parameter uncertainty model is identified and utilized for robust controller synthesis.

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women, affecting more than 10% of women worldwide. Microscopic analysis of a biopsy remains one of the most important methods to diagnose the type of breast cancer. This requires specialized analysis by pathologists, in a task that i) is highly time- and cost-consuming and ii) often leads to nonconsensual results. The relevance and potential of automatic classification algorithms using hematoxylin-eosin stained histopathological images has already been demonstrated, but the reported results are still sub-optimal for clinical use. With the goal of advancing the state-of-the-art in automatic classification, the Grand Challenge on BreAst Cancer Histology images (BACH) was organized in conjunction with the 15th International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition (ICIAR 2018). BACH aimed at the classification and localization of clinically relevant histopathological classes in microscopy and whole-slide images from a large annotated dataset, specifically compiled and made publicly available for the challenge. Following a positive response from the scientific community, a total of 64 submissions, out of 677 registrations, effectively entered the competition. The submitted algorithms improved the state-of-the-art in automatic classification of breast cancer with microscopy images to an accuracy of 87%. Convolutional neuronal networks were the most successful methodology in the BACH challenge. Detailed analysis of the collective results allowed the identification of remaining challenges in the field and recommendations for future developments. The BACH dataset remains publicly available as to promote further improvements to the field of automatic classification in digital pathology. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a modification of reference-model adaptive control with a layered network of higher-order neural units (HONUs) as adaptive state-feedback controllers. The degree of freedom of such neural controller is deemed here as the number of applied HONUs of a customizable polynomial order and as of their individually customizable input vectors. Furthermore, the control scheme is enhanced because potentially occurring disturbances of controlled variable can result in that the sample-by-sample adapted controllers may tend to adaptively force the plant output to merely follow the reference model output because input data are affected by the error of disturbance, while the overall control loop dynamics would be more accurately adapted if no perturbation occurs or if the reference model is actuated with actually measured variables. Furthermore, the controller weight updates usually involve some step-delayed computations that might be in fact recalculated with the latest updated weights, so the controller learning can be improved.

In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm towards the automatic labeling of Twitter accounts in respect to thematic categories derived from DBpedia properties. We describe the rationale behind the selection of these thematic categories, and discuss their evaluation assessment. Finally, we propose and analyze two generic and adaptable methodologies for discovering the necessary linked data resources for further enhancing the thematic description of Twitter accounts.
