This paper presents a comprehensive exploration into the critical aspect of effector design within the context of mobile platforms utilised during emergency scenarios. In times of crisis, ranging from natural disasters to man-made incidents, the efficiency and versatility of mobile platforms equipped with specialised effectors play a pivotal role in ensuring effective response and mitigation. The proposed robotic system consists of a universal platform, a robotic arm, and a custom effector with controls. Our experimental verification of the system shows promising results and the feasibility of the proposed system. © 2024 IEEE.

The increasing global concern regarding humane pest control methods and the need for effective small mammal management in various environments have prompted the development of innovative technologies. This paper presents our ongoing design of a novel smart non-lethal trap prototype for small animals equipped with an ESP32-CAM and PIR sensor. To differentiate between domestic pets and rodents, ResNet50 is utilised and capable of classifying five animals: cats, dogs, martens, rat or mice, and hedgehogs. Traditional rodent control methods often rely on lethal means, which pose ethical and ecological challenges. Most pest control businesses also use the labour-intensive strategy of physically setting up and maintaining rodenticide bait stations on a commercial basis. To address these issues, our prototype leverages the capabilities of the ESP32-CAM to create an intelligent non-lethal trapping solution with the ability to remotely free unwanted captured animals via the cloud. © 2024 IEEE.

Smart cities have been a very active research area in the past 20 years, while continuously adapting to new technological advancements and keeping up with the times regarding sustainability and climate change. In this context, there have been numerous proposals to expand the scope of smart cities, focusing on resilience and sustainability, among other aspects, resulting in terms like smart sustainable cities. At the same time, there is an ongoing discussion regarding the degree in which smart cities put people at their centre. In this work, we argue toward expanding the current smart city definition by integrating the circular economy as one of its central pillars and adopting the term smart (and) circular city. We discuss the ways a smart and circular city encompasses both sustainability and smartness in an integral manner, while also being well-positioned to foster novel business activity and models and helping to place citizens at the heart of the smart city. In this sense, we also argue that previous research in smart cities and technologies, such as those related to Industry 4.0, can serve as a cornerstone to implement circular economy activities within cities, at a scale that exceeds current activities that are based on more conventional approaches. We also outline current open challenges in this domain and research questions that still need to be addressed.

Optimizing crude oil operations scheduling considering blending in tanks

This paper focuses on the optimization of crude oil operations scheduling in a refinery that is supplied with crude oil by ship. One of the main challenges associated with the crude oil operations scheduling problem is the management of crude storage in tanks. Since storage capacity is limited and there are several types of crude oil depending on their composition, it is necessary to store mixtures of crude oil in tanks. This feature makes necessary the inclusion of nonlinear, non-convex constraints, which complicates the resolution of mathematical programming models. To address this problem, we have developed a mathematical programming model based on a continuous-time formulation using time slots, along with a strategy based on piecewise McCormick relaxation that allows us to efficiently handle the nonlinear constraints generated by blending crude oils in tanks.

Optimizing the monthly scheduling of crudes in a terminal-refinery system

This paper focuses on solving the optimization of crude oil operations scheduling carried out in a real system composed of a refinery and a marine terminal, over a monthly horizon. In the present article, we introduce a large-scale mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model that faithfully represents the operation and characteristics of the system. Considering the model's complexity and its non-linear and non-convex nature, the challenge lies in solving the model in a time frame that meets the user's needs. To tackle this problem, we develop a temporal decomposition method in conjunction with a linear approximation.

Cancer is a widespread global health problem, claiming millions of lives each year, and skin cancer represents a significant threat as it is one of the most common types. Early tumor detection via medical imaging is critical for effective treatment. Leveraging artificial intelligence, particularly novel models like Transformers, presents promising avenues for improved diagnosis. This paper explores the efficacy of a Collective Intelligence approach using AI in classifying cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, aiming to reduce classification errors and support clinical decision-making. We created five different configurations using various datasets to compare the results. The results show solid performance for the CI in the evaluated tasks, reaching up to 75.89% accuracy. The lack of images in certain classes significantly contributes to overfitting. It is suggested to explore data expansion strategies and improve consistency in image capture for future work.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of a people tracking system could have been crucial, particularly in sensitive environments, such as hospitals. DPPL Hallway Tracker is a framework that uses security camera footage to determine which rooms in a corridor a person has entered. It generates a database containing all the people identified and allows quick identification of potential cases of infection based on the time spent in a room and its maximum capacity. DPPL Hallway Tracker is structured in two phases: detection and re-identification. In the first phase, it exploits Mask RCNN to identify people and room doors. In the second one, it uses the deep association metric model from DeepSORT to re-identify a person as he leaves a room. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
