Results From a Large-Scale IoT-based Intervention for Energy Saving and Sustainability Awareness via Behavior Change in 25 K-12 Schools in Europe

The unfolding climate crisis has resulted in a rising interest for increasing sustainability awareness and achieving energy savings worldwide. Several interventions within educational environments have been aimed at mobilizing younger audiences towards such goals. However, most of the interventions carried out so far are based on a subset of possible tools (e.g., IoT monitoring, gamification) and offer "all or nothing"approaches, which do not cope well with the uniqueness of schools and the need to adapt interventions to specific contexts (e.g. school size, building, curriculum, teacher involvement). We present a large-scale intervention in 25 school buildings in Europe over the course of two school years. Our intervention was based on the installation of a relatively low-cost IoT infrastructure in schools, that produced real-time energy-related data from the school buildings involved, and the application of a strategy combining, in a flexible and customizable way, educational activities, monitoring tools, gamification, and competition to motivate behavior change and achieve energy savings. Overall, 2983 students and 204 educators were directly involved to a variable degree of participation. Our results indicate a positive overall result in terms of short-term energy savings in most schools involved, with an average reduction of 20-25% in the energy that could be affected by end-users, as well as a 32.9% increase after the intervention in students self-reporting good or very good sustainability awareness. These findings suggest that such interventions can be a valuable step towards educating young students regarding sustainability and towards sustainable schools, if designed and implemented properly. © 2014 IEEE.

The optimization of a controlled process in a simulation without access to the model itself is a common scenario and very relevant to many chemical engineering applications. A general approach is to apply a black-box optimization algorithm to a parameterized control scheme. The success then depends on the quality of the parametrization that should be low-dimensional though rich enough to express the salient features. This work proposes using solution snapshots to extract dominant modes of the temporal dynamics of a process and use them for low-dimensional parametrizations of control functions. The approach is called proper orthogonal decomposition in time (time-POD). We provide theoretical reasoning and illustrate the performance for the optimal control of a methanation reactor.

In this letter, we propose a control scheme for regulating the voltage in Direct Current (DC) power networks. In contrast with other works in the literature where the loads are assumed to be constant, we consider uncertain time-varying loads described as the outputs of nonlinear dynamical exosystems with uncertain parameters. Based on the output regulation methodology, the proposed control scheme ensures the robust stability of the overall network and achieves voltage regulation in presence of impedance (Z), current (I), and power (P) loads. The simulation results illustrate excellent performance of the proposed control scheme.

This paper addresses the problem of closed-loop operation of scheduling, together with the interaction of control and scheduling, for a class of processes that appear very often in industry: those that combine continuous production lines with parallel batch units that share some resources. The paper presents a novel approach to this problem, including batching and a new type of precedence in the assignment problem. It also considers the effect of shared resources on the duration of the cycle time of the batch units. The approach is illustrated with a real-life example of a canned tuna factory

Open space exploration is difficult to carry out directly from the Earth's surface. Lunar bases, the construction of which is announced by various countries, are considered as transit points for spaceships and spacecrafts heading further to the planets of the Solar system and open space. However, for any movement in the space the energy is required, and the source of the energy is fuel. It is not always advisable and almost impossible to deliver the needed amount of a fuel to the Moon from the Earth. In this paper we consider one of the possible solutions to build a flexible mobile production system for producing of a fuel from the ore, which could be found on the lunar surface. The technology for such reprocessing has already been defined, then, a system is required that will be able to produce fuel and supply spaceships and spacecrafts in an autonomous mode. The specifics and composition of such system are described, the layout of the system was simulated. The calculations of the core resource of the system are provided. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper deals with the scheduling of batch processes that share common resources having consumption profiles that change over time and are subjected to some global constraints. In order to approach the problem, the formulation mixes three different time basis. Scheduling is performed in continuous time, but the description of the shared resources and the global constraints uses discrete values. The method is applied to a challenging problem in a tuna canning factory that mixes continuous flows of cans with the batch operation of a set of sterilizers sharing the steam supply line.

A novel autotuning procedure is presented through application to an industrial in-line pH control system. The procedure has three advantages over classical relay auto-tuners: experiment duration is very short (no need for limit-cycle convergence); all data is used for identification (instead of only peaks and switch instances); a parameter uncertainty model is identified and utilized for robust controller synthesis.
