This paper describes an approach to optimal management of hydrogen networks in refineries, focusing on the problems of reconfiguration that appears when, due to plant failures, the production of the hydrogen generating units suddenly decreases. The problem is formulated in terms of optimization as a MINLP one. Also, guidelines to the implementation of the optimum are presented with the aim of providing a practical solution to the inherent uncertainly and changing dynamics associated to the process. © 2012 IFAC.

Fuzzy modeling is one of the most known and used techniques in different areas to emulate the behavior of systems and processes. In most cases, as in data-driven fuzzy modeling, these fuzzy models reach a high performance from the point of view of accuracy, but from other points of view, such as complexity or interpretability, the models can present a poor performance. Several approaches are found in the specialized literature to reduce the complexity and improve the interpretability of the fuzzy models. Here, a post-processing approach is taken into account via the definition of the rules selection criterion that aims to choose the most relevant rules according to the well-known accuracy-interpretability trade-off. This criterion is based on Orthogonal Transformations, here the QRP transformation is taking into consideration, and its parameters are tuned genetically. The main objective is to check the true significance, drawbacks and advantages the firing matrix of the rules, that is the foundation of the most usual approaches based on orthogonal transformations for the complexity reduction of the fuzzy models. A neuro-fuzzy system, FasArt (Fuzzy Adaptive System ART based), and several case studies, data sets from the KEEL Project Repository, are used to tune and check this approach. This neuro-fuzzy system generates Mamdani fuzzy rule based systems (FRBSs), each with its own particularities and complexities from the point of view of fuzzy sets and rule generation. NSGA-II is the MOEA tool used to tune the criterion parameters based on accuracy-interpretability ideas. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract This work investigates the topic of solving Bilinear Matrix Inequalities (BMIs) problems in the optimal control design field, using successive resolutions of properly defined Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). This technique can be described as an ‘LMI-based coordinate descent method'. Indeed the original (BMI) problem is solved independently for each coordinate at each step using a LMI optimization, while the other coordinate is fixed. No method based on this idea has been formally proved to converge to the global optimum of the BMI problem, or a local optimum in general. This will be discussed using relevant results both from the mathematical programming and control design points of view. This discussion supports the algorithm proposed here which, thanks to a particular change of variables, leads to sequences of improving solutions. Also emphasized is a second improvement important to avoid in practice early convergence to suboptimal solutions instead of local optima. The control framework used is that of optimal output feedback design for linear time invariant (LTI) systems. An example using a random plant is drawn to illustrate the typical effectiveness of the algorithm.

An approach to assist the determination of the best time-after-injection for taking an scintigram in bone scanning is proposed. More precisely, a technique is discussed to estimate the evolution of the portions, in different compartments of the body, of the injected dose using a model of the radionuclide distribution dynamics, the available measurements and information on variations of the parameters. At each time, the possible range of variation of these unmeasured states is evaluated, and from this the expected evolution of the contrast of the image is obtained. This makes it possible to predict the best time for taking the image. To show the applicability, a practical example is provided.

A dynamic reduced model of an industrial diesel hydrodesulfurization plant has been developed and validated against plant data. Its purpose is the prediction of the rate of hydrogen consumption, as well as some other critical variables, as a function of the hydrocarbon feed, so as to be integrated in a decision support system aimed at the operation optimization in real time of the refinery hydrogen network. A model which combines first physical-chemical principles with black box elements is proposed. Model structure and calibration procedure are described, and validation results are presented. © 2009 IFAC.

This paper presents a NMPC of a supermarket refrigeration system. This is a hybrid process involving switched nonlinear dynamics and discrete events, on/off manipulated variables (valves and compressors), continuous controlled variables (goods temperatures) and finally, several operation constraints. The hybrid controller is based on a parameterization of the on/off control signals in terms of time of occurrence of events instead of using directly binary values, in this way, we can re-formulate the optimization problem as a NLP problem. Results of the hybrid controller operation are given.

The joint design of processes and control is an integration technique that incorporates control requirements in the process design stage. This paper presents an integrated design methodology and illustrate it with an alternative design for a real plant of activated sludge processing. The process design obtained is not only optimum from the economic point of view, but exhibits certain previously fixed dynamic characteristics. The point of operation and the size of the processing units are obtained through mathematical programming, together with the parameters of the controller. © Copyright 2007 IFAC.
