Fuzzy Description Logics (DLs) are a formalism for the representation of structured knowledge affected by imprecision or vagueness. In the setting of fuzzy DLs, restricting to a finite set of degrees of truth has proved to be useful. In this paper, we propose finite fuzzy DLs as a generalization of existing approaches. We assume a finite totally ordered set of linguistic terms or labels, which is very useful in practice since expert knowledge is usually expressed using linguistic terms. Then, we consider any smooth t-norm defined over this set of degrees of truth. In particular, we focus on the finite fuzzy DL ALCH, studying some logical properties, and showing the decidability of the logic by presenting a reasoning preserving reduction to the non-fuzzy case.

We describe a method to automatically discover translation collocations from a bilingual corpus and how these improve a machine translation system. The process of inference of collocations is iterative: An alignment is used to derive an initial set of collocations, these are used in turn to improve the alignment and this new alignment is used to generate new collocations. This process is repeated until no more collocations are found. The final alignment and the set of collocations are used to train a translation model. We use a model that is based on finite state transducers and word clusters and has been modified to work with collocations in addition to single words. We present experiments in which we show that automatic collocations improve translation quality without prior linguistic information.

This paper presents a mathematical technique for modeling the generation of Grid-solutions employing a Case based reasoning system (CBR). Roughly speaking, an intelligent system that tries to be adapted to highly dynamic environment needs an efficient integration of high-level processes (deliberative and time-costly) within low-level (reactive, faster but poorer in quality) processes. The most relevant aspect of our current approach is that, unexpectedly, the performance of the CBR-system do not get worse any time that it retrieves worse cases in situations even when it has enough time to generate better solutions. We concentrate on formal aspects of the proposed Grid-CBR system without establishing which should be the most adequate procedure in a subsequent implementation stage. The advantage of the presented scheme is that it does not depend on neither the particular problem nor a concrete environment. It consists in a formal approach that only requires, on one hand, local information about the averaged-time spent by the system in obtaining a solution and, on the other hand, an estimation about their temporal restrictions. The potential use of industry standard technologies to implement such a Grid-enabled CBR system is discussed here too. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Fuzzy ontologies extend classical ontologies to allow the representation of imprecise and vague knowledge. Although a relatively important amount of work has been carried out in the last years and they have been successfully used in several applications, several notions from fuzzy logic, such as fuzzy integrals, have not been considered yet in fuzzy ontologies. In this work, we show how to support fuzzy integrals in fuzzy ontologies. As a theoretical formalism, we provide the syntax and semantics of a fuzzy Description Logic with fuzzy integrals. We also provide a reasoning algorithm for a family of fuzzy integrals and show how to encode them into the language Fuzzy OWL 2. © 2011 IEEE.

System for determining the position of the human body in the virtual world has been designed, implemented and researched. The system consists of two independent subsystems: subsystem for collecting, processing and transmitting data on the position of the human body and subsystem for visualizing collected data to the virtual world. In general, the system measures the position of the human body, processes the data, generates the set of commands for the virtual world and sends these commands to the virtual reality helmet for processing. Schemes of the system and algorithm of system's functioning are offered. The system using quaternions and Euler angles was investigated. Also was shown that the system works more efficiently when using quaternions. © 2022 IEEE.

Structural properties and physical and chemical water-sorption processes were investigated in the humidity-sensitive MgAl2O4 ceramics sintered at 1300 °C for 2 h under the influence of water. It is shown that ceramics has developed the structure of grains, grain boundaries and pores with trimodal pore size distribution. It is established that absorbed water in ceramics result in more intensive trapping of positrons in extended defects near grain boundaries. Furthermore, the presence of water in the inner structure of ceramics leads to specific fragmentation of free volume in the nanopores and ortho-positronium decaying in the water. © 2022 IEEE.

Classical ontologies are not suitable to represent imprecise or vague information, which has led to several extensions using non-classical logics. In particular, several fuzzy extensions have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we present the fuzzy ontology reasoner DeLorean, the first to support a fuzzy extension of OWL 2. We discuss how to use it for fuzzy ontology representation and reasoning, and describe some implementation details and optimization techniques. An empirical evaluation demonstrates that these optimizations considerably improve the performance of the reasoner. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In order for Semantic Web applications to be successful a key component should be their ability to take advantage of rich content descriptions in meaningful ways. Reasoning consists a key part in this process and it consequently appears at the core of the Semantic Web architecture stack. From a practical point of view however, it is not always clear how applications may take advantage of the knowledge discovery capabilities that reasoning can offer to the Semantic Web. In this paper we present and survey current methods that can be used to integrate inference-based services with such applications. We argue that an important decision is to have reasoning tasks logically and physically distributed. To this end, we discuss relevant protocols and languages such as DIG and SPARQL and give an overview of our Knowledge Discovery Interface. Further, we describe the lessons-learned from remotely invoking reasoning services through the OWL API. © 2010 IEEE.

Although the use of Ternary Content-Addressable Memories (TCAMs) in the flow tables of the Software-Defined Network (SDN) switches increases the efficiency of packets matching procedure, drawbacks such as their large power consumption and the limitation on the number of flow rules that can be installed must be taken into account. This paper tackles the joint problem of power consumption and TCAM size limitation in SDN. By exploiting the Rate Adaptation technique and compression methods, a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm is proposed to practically solve it. Simulations on a real network topology show that our proposed solution outperforms other state-of-The-Art approaches, both in terms of power saving gains (20% at non-peak TM) and maximum TCAM utilization (5%). © 2020 IEEE.

This paper gives an account of how traditional metadata application profiles are related to Web ontologies and Description Logics. It is shown that metadata profiles can be formalized into Description Logics;oddly enough though, OWL 2, with its current expressivity, is shown to be inadequate for this purpose. First, we give an overview of the recent proposal for representing metadata profiles using the notion of Description Set Profiles and XML Schema. We point out the necessity of an additional representation scheme, using also ontological languages. Following, we introduce a possible translation of Description Set Profiles to Description Logics and identify the required expressivity characteristics that are essential for such a translation. The relationship of this representation to OWL Integrity Constraints is also examined. Finally, we discuss what expense do these characteristics put on to the complexity of reasoning. © 2010 ACM.
