enhancing programming learning performance through a Jigsaw collaborative learning method in a metaverse virtual space

Background: Computational thinking (CT) is crucial to fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Many elementary schools have been cultivating students’ CT through block-based programming languages such as Scratch using traditional teacher-centered teaching methods. However, the approach excessively relies on teacher lectures, so the teacher’s teaching load is hefty, and most students cannot receive timely assistance from teachers, thus reducing students’ programming learning performance, interest, and confidence. Therefore, this study designs a Jigsaw collaborative learning method implemented in a metaverse virtual space (JCLM-MVS) for peer-to-peer Scratch programming learning to promote learners’ programming learning performance, CT, and learning attitudes. This study used a quasi-experimental research method, with 48 fifth-grade students from two classes in Taiwan’s elementary school as the research participants. One class of 24 students was randomly assigned to the experimental group using JCLM-MVS to conduct Scratch programming learning, whereas the other class of 24 students was assigned to the control group using the traditional teacher-centered teaching method. Main findings: The study found that the experimental group of learners showed significantly better Scratch programming learning performance and attitude than the control group, and there was no statistically significant difference in CT between both groups, but both learning approaches effectively promoted CT. Additionally, the interview results showed that most interviewees stated that using JCLM-MVS for Scratch programming learning could receive timely assistance from peers, make collaborative learning more efficient and learning more enjoyable, and more intend to use JCLM-MVS for Scratch programming learning than using traditional teacher-centered teaching method due to the effective collaborative interaction mechanisms and realistic learning space provided in the metaverse virtual spa

A game-based learning system based on octalysis gamification framework to promote employees’ Japanese learning

Using digital learning to assist in-service employees in promoting language skills has become an efficient way that can save training costs and profits. However, the employees’ language learning performance often is not as expected due to low learning motivation, willingness, and persistence. Therefore, this study developed a game-based Japanese learning system based on the Octalysis gamification framework proposed by Chou (2016) to facilitate enterprise employees’ learning effectiveness of Japanese as a second language (L2). All the eight core drives of the Octalysis gamification framework were adopted in the design of the learning functions and gamification mechanisms, including "epic meaning and calling," "development and accomplishment," "empowerment of creativity and feedback," "ownership and possession," "social influence and relatedness," "scarcity and impatience," "unpredictability and curiosity," and "loss and avoidance." This study used a true experimental design and recruited 54 Taiwanese employees from a Taiwan branch of an international Japanese business company to conduct a two-week experiment. The research participants were randomly assigned as the experimental and control groups respectively, using a Japanese learning system with or without a game-based design to support their Japanese learning. This study confirmed that the game-based Japanese learning system could significantly enhance the learners’ engagement in learning behaviors, learning performance, learning motivation, and immersion experience. In addition, for most learning functions designed by applying the core drives regarded as intrinsic motivators in the Octalysis gamification framework, the more frequently the learners used the functions, the better they performed in learning performance. Many studies have confirmed that the collaborative problem-based learning (CPBL) mode is an increasingly popular educational paradigm that has highly potential to cultivate learners' collaborative learning and problem solving abilities. However, how to effectively promote positive group members' interaction and group accountability is a critical issue in the CPBL mode. This work thus presents a group incentive mechanism (GIM) based on considering several important factors affecting peers' interaction and group accountability in collaborative learning theories to promote the learning performance learners in a CPBL system. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed GIM, this work recruited 48 Grade 4 students from an elementary school to participate in the instruction experiment. The quasi-experimental design was adopted to assess the differences in learning performance, interaction relationship, group efficacy, and group cohesiveness between the experimental group learners using the proposed GIM and control group learners using the individual incentive mechanism (IIM) under using the CPBL system to collaboratively solve a target problem. Analytical results show that although the control group learners using the IIM had higher social network interaction than the experimental group learners using the proposed GIM, the experimental group learners presents better learning performance and group efficacy than the control group.

In recent years, english instruction has emphasized the importance of listening comprehension; however, playing CDs in class is still the most widely used approaches to practicing english listening in Taiwan. It is obvious that this training approach cannot satisfy individual needs. Thus, the study proposes a novel video-annotated learning review mechanism (VALRM), which can assist individual learners to mark the video sections that cannot listen clearly for review, and to enhance learners' english listening performance and perceptions. This study adopts quasi-experimental design to examine the effects of learners in the experimental group using the VALRM and those in the control group using Youtube with self-determined learning review mechanism (SDLRM) on english listening comprehension performance and technology acceptance. Analytical results show that the learners using the VALRM achieved significantly better listening comprehension performance than those using the SDLRM, whereas the technology acceptance of learners in both groups did not have significant difference. Additionally, the interview results show most of the interviewees agreed that the VALRM is more effective in promoting english listening learning performance than the SDLRM because they could find out the unclear parts and replay them easily and efficiently.

eDITOR'S SUMMARY Since the 1990s massive open online courses (MOOCs) have offered web-based learning on a large scale and with open access. The leading MOOC providers in 2014 – Udemy, Coursera and edX – vary in detail but share the goal of facilitating learning for unlimited audiences at no cost or minimal charge, overcoming socioeconomic hurdles and opening education to all. The potential is strong, and data shows promising registration figures from India and economically developing countries. Yet MOOCs fall short of their goal of widespread and readily accessed education, impeded by technology challenges, lack of basic education and predominance of english as the language of instruction. Maintaining a high standard of educational quality is challenging, and attrition rates are very high. Those in library and information science can facilitate learning through MOOCs and also benefit by using the platform to build awareness of the professional field.

Subject analysis on the field of e-learning research

With the digital development and the global trend of information technology applying teaching and learning in recent years, every country around the world regards the promotion of e-learning as a very important policy of the country. They lay special emphasis on the development of the subject research in e-learning. The present study adopts the search strategy of generalized definition of e-learning and collects 2,125 SSCI periodical literature in total on e-learning field from the years of 2000 till 2009. They are analyzed with automatic context exploration tool CATAR to proceed to dissection. Then they are respectively analyzed with co-occurrence words and bibliographic coupling to proceed to the research subject analysis. Thus it can integrate the frames of research subjects of e-learning field. Not only can the results of the present study help the researchers to look into their own field specialty, to master the development situation of research subject dimensions and to make reference to the scholars and experts to determine their research subjects, but it can also help understand the research development status of international e-learning field.

As cultural institutions libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) share the mission to organize information objects, artifacts, and data for user access and enlightenment. While (LAMs) may follow different metadata standards and procedures to manage their collections and each type of institution has unique information organization and service concerns, digital technologies have enabled them to create, organize, preserve, and provide access to digital collections for global audience. Increasingly LAMs are converging in their information organization and management effort (LAM entries in *** ; Zorich, Waibel & erway 2008 ), and the cultural silos created by libraries, archives, and museums are being integrated or rendered transparent for users (Calhoun 2006; Christenson and Tennant 2005; Uzwyshyn 2007). The proposed panel is designed to examine the convergence of information organization practices of libraries, archives, and museums; explore collaboration opportunities; and discuss the implications of LAM information organization practices for educating information professionals for these cultural heritage institutions. The panel consists of five speakers who will cover (1) the use of a faceted classification to organize museum artifacts and support website development; (2) metadata design and applications for organizing and preserving information objects for several types of cultural institutions; (3) the development of the Biodiversity Heritage library and the involvement of libraries and non-library specialists in this effort; (4) analysis of descriptive standards used by cultural organizations and areas where libraries, archives, and museums can collaborate; and (5) collaboration among cultural institutions, especially in the technology area.
