As a pivotal technique in intelligent education systems, cognitive diagnosis (CD) serves to reveal students’ knowledge proficiency for better tackling subsequent tasks. Unfortunately, due to pursuing high model interpretability, existing manually designed models for CD often hold simplistic architectures, which cannot cope with intricate data in modern education platforms. Furthermore, the bias of human design limits the emergence of novel and effective CD models. To develop interpretable and more effective models, thus this paper proposes an evolutionary multi-objective neural architecture search (NAS) approach for CD. Specifically, we first adopt a comprehensive search space for the NAS task of CD: all candidate models can be encompassed by a general model that deals with three distinct types of inputs. Then, an innovative model interpretability objective is devised to formulate the architecture search task as a bi-objective optimization problem (BOP). To solve the BOP, we employ a multi-objective genetic programming (MOGP) as the search strategy to explore the search space. To make the employed MOGP search well, all architectures are first encoded by trees for easy optimization, and we devise a genetic operation and a population initialization strategy to expedite its convergence. Finally, the proposed approach is actually a MOGP-based NAS approach for CD. Extensive experiments show that CD models searched by the proposed approach exhibit significantly better performance than existing models and hold as good interpretability as handcrafted models. A method to induce multi-colors on an iron surface by using Circularly Polarized Femtosecond Laser (CPFL) processing was proposed. The subwavelength ripples were fabricated by CPFL scanning over the iron surface where covered by randomly distributed nanoparticles with diameters from 50 nm to 190 nm. A while light was used to irradiate the treated iron surface, and the relation between surface colors and incident angles was explored. By changing the incident angles of a white light from 0° to 80°, diverse colors were displayed on the laser-treated iron surface. In order to understand the underlying mechanism of the experimental results, a model of spherical nanoparticles spread randomly on ripples of the iron surface was built by Finite-difference Time Domain (FDTD). The experiments show that the surface reflection spectrum is varied from blue to red by increasing the incident angle of white light, which is consistent with the experimental results. Furthermore, it is found that the reflection spectrum shifts towards blue and the peak increases by decreasing the sizes of nanoparticles. This work may find potential applications in the fields of information storage, identifying codes and anti-counterfeiting patterns. © 2015, Chinese Academy of Sciences. All right reserved.

Existing single-modal and multi-modal salient object detection (SOD) methods focus on designing specific architectures tailored for their respective tasks. However, developing completely different models for different tasks leads to lab.r and time consumption, as well as high computational and practical deployment costs. In this paper, we attempt to address both single-modal and multi-modal SOD in a unified framework called UniSOD, which fully exploits the overlapping prior knowledge between different tasks. Nevertheless, assigning appropriate strategies to modality variable inputs is challenging. To this end, UniSOD learns modality-aware prompts with task-specific hints through adaptive prompt learning, which are plugged into the proposed pre-trained baseline SOD model to handle corresponding tasks, while only requiring few learnable parameters compared to training the entire model. Each modality-aware prompt is generated from a switchable prompt generation block, which adaptively performs structural switching based on single-modal and multi-modal inputs without human intervention. Through end-to-end joint training, UniSOD achieves overall performance improvement on 14 benchmark datasets for RGB, RGB-D, and RGB-T SOD, which demonstrates that our method effectively and efficiently unifies single-modal and multi-modal SOD tasks. The nonlinear metamaterials have been shown to provide nonlinear properties with high nonlinear conversion efficiency and in a myriad of light manipulation. Here we study terahertz generation from nonlinear metasurface consisting of single layer nanoscale split-ring resonator array. The terahertz generation due to optical rectification by the second-order nonlinearity of the split-ring resonator is investigated by a time-domain implementation of the hydrodynamic model for electron dynamics in metal. The results show that the nonlinear metasurface enables us to generate broadband terahertz radiation and free from quasi-phase-matching conditions. Plasmonic metamaterials and metasurfaces offer new opportunities in developing high performance terahertz emitters/detectors beyond the limitations of conventional nonlinear materials. However, simple meta-atoms for second-order nonlinear applications encounter fundamental trade-offs in the necessary symmetry-breaking and local-field enhancement due to radiation damping that is inherent to the operating resonant mode and cannot be controlled separately. Here we present a novel concept that eliminates this restriction obstructing the improvement of terahertz generation efficiency in nonlinear metasurfaces based on metallic nano-resonators. This is achieved by combing a resonant dark-state metasurface, which locally drives nonlinear SRRs in the near field, with a specific spatial symmetry that enables destructive interference of the radiating linear moments of the SRRs, and perfect absorption via simultaneous electric and magnetic critical coupling of the pump radiation to the dark mode. Our proposal allows eliminating linear radiation damping, while maintaining constructive interference and effective radiation of the nonlinear components. We numerically demonstrate a giant second-order nonlinear susceptibility ∼ 10−11 m/V, one order improvement compared to previously reported split-ring-resonator metasurface, and correspondingly, two orders of magnitude enhanced terahertz energy extraction should be expected with our configuration under the same conditions. Our study offers a paradigm of high efficiency tunable nonlinear meta-devices and paves the way to revolutionary terahertz technologies and optoelectronic nanocircuitry. A low-profile, high-gain, wideband circularly polarized folded transmitarray antenna (CPFTA) is proposed, and a polarization-selective linear-to-circular polarization (LP-CP) conversion element is introduced. The CPFTA consists of a linearly polarized (LP) magnetoelectric dipole antenna and a circularly polarized (CP) helical patch antenna. The CPFTA demonstrates excellent performance with a 3dB gain bandwidth of 29.5% and a 3dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 40.9%.
