Fostering Reflective Teaching: Using the Student Participation Observation Tool (SPOT) to Promote Active Instructional Approaches in STEM

The Student Participation Observation Tool (SPOT) is a web-based classroom observation protocol developed for higher education STEM courses and based on research on evidence-based practices. The low-inference and objective nature of the SPOT and visual outputs make it an optimal tool for teaching professional development. The SPOT allows novice users to use data from their own classes to reflect on, and make data-driven changes to, their teaching practices. In particular, the SPOT was designed to present faculty with objective data related to their use of active instructional approaches, be easy for practitioners to use, and provide data outputs that are illustrative and non-evaluative. Use of the SPOT in a workshop series revealed that these design features allow faculty to collect reliable observation data with minimal training. Furthermore, SPOT data promoted faculty reflection on teaching practice and motivated faculty to make changes to their teaching that aligned with more learner-centered practices. Beyond teaching professional development, we suggest how the SPOT may be used to increase the usefulness of peer observation for teaching evaluation. © 2022 National Science Teaching Association.

Currently, boxing and Muay Thai are popular sports and exercises around the world. Foul-smell in boxing gloves becomes a problem that needs to be eliminated before the next training session. The musty smell in boxing gloves is caused by accumulation of sweat and bacteria from the boxer's hands. The process of eliminating odor using UV-C light can be the solution. In this research, the application of UV-C light was used to fabricate a DIY (Do it yourself) device to reduce bad smell in boxing gloves. Use of a UV-C light at a wavelength of 253.7 nm could remove musty smells within 30 minutes. The odor level in the boxing glove was measured by the electronic nose system, which was made up from 3 gas sensors. The results showed that UV-C light was able to reduce bad smell in boxing gloves up to 90%. © Content from this work may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licence.

High stakes exams inflate gender gap thus leading to systematic grading errors in introductory physics

Previous research has suggested that changing the percentage of the course grade associated with exam grades in STEM courses can change the gender gap in the course. It’s also been shown that assessments with the highest stakes have the lowest (relative) scores for female students. Previous research by the authors has shown that the implementation of retake exams can eliminate the gender gap in introductory physics courses. This paper explores several different hypotheses for why retake exams are associated with a zeroed gender gap. Analyzing data from exams with different stakes, we argue that the entire gender gap on introductory physics exams may be due to the stakes associated with those exams. In other words, the data support the idea that a gender grade-gap on exams is not measuring a gender difference in the physics knowledge or physics ability of these students. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Perovskite materials have garnered significant attention in the field of solar cell applications due to their highly promising performance. However, the utilization of lead (Pb) as the primary material in perovskite solar cells has been associated to health and environmental hazards. Consequently an alternative material for lead is necessary in order to develop environmentally friendly and high-efficiency solar cells. The reported efficiency value still necessitates further enhancement, indicating that the development of lead-free solar cells requires improvement. Methylammonium tin iodide (MaSnI 3 ), a lead-free perovskite compound, can be utilized as a substitute for lead halide-based solar cells. This substitution is possible since MaSnI 3 is stable, non-toxic, and has a high efficiency. The simulation was conducted by the Solar Cell Capacitance Simulator (SCAPS-1D), employing the AM 1.5G spectrum. The primary objective of this research is to enhance the performance of the hole transport layer materials in order to achieve a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) using MaSnI 3 material. Organic and inorganic HTL such as CuSBS, PEDOT:PSS+WO 3 , Spiro-OMeTAD, P3HT, NiO, Cul, SrCu 2 O 2 and PTAA are required in our simulations. These materials were selected to explore their potential in optimizing device performance due to their distinct properties, such as conductivity, stability, and compatibility with MaSnI3. Regarding HTM performance for device construction, our modelling results indicate that the 100 nm CuSBS 2 layer works better. We have found that by using the configuration of ITO/TIO 2 /MASnI 3 /CuSBS 2 /Au, a PCE of 27.67% with a Voc of 0.97 V can be achieved.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, it requires educators and students at all levels of education to be able to adapt to virtual learning. Based on the needs analysis that the researchers conducted through an online questionnaire for science class of XI students, their obstacle during distance learning was that 64% of students still had difficulty understanding physics material. Students have difficulty analyzing problems in physics problems because there are too many formulas that must be understood, as well as learning factors for students who are less effective. Most of them are interested in interactive learning methods by emphasizing audiovisual, as well as animations and learning videos. Therefore, the study aims to develop e-learning assisted by flashcards to improve the scientific literacy in high school students, because it is easily accessible on any device, can be via a laptop or smartphone. The average validation results by media experts are 89.58%, material experts are 90.65%, learning experts are 94.15% and by class XI physics teachers are 96.00%. The average value of the overall validation test by experts is 92.6% with the interpretation of "very feasible"as a learning medium with an N-Gain of 0.44 on a medium increase interpretation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This study aims to develop a PISA-based test on mechanical wave material in high school in accordance with good test qualification standards in terms of validity, reliability, level of difficulty, discriminatory power and effectiveness of distractors. The type of research is development research, using the ADDIE model. The data analysis technique used is qualitative and quantitative. The results of qualitative analysis, the quality of the PISA-based test is very good with a percentage of validity of 84.75% based on the results of validation by 5 experts who are reviewed in terms of material, construct and grammar. Quantitative analysis of the quality of the PISA-based test are good. Analysis of 38 items in the small group test obtained 36 items accepted and 2 items rejected. The large group test obtained: (1) 32 valid items (88.89%), 4 invalid items (11.11%). (2) the reliability of the tests is included in the Very Good category with a value of 0.839. (3) 4 (11.11%) questions in the easy category, 30 (83.33%) questions in the medium category and 2 (5.56%) in the difficult category. (4) The discriminatory power of questions obtained 1 (2.78%) questions in the very good category, 31 (86.61%) questions in the good category and 4 (11.11%) questions in the bad category. (5) 32 (88.89%) items are effective and 4 (11.11%) items are ineffective. In this paper, the study investigates the mechanical and physical properties of water hyacinth and cogon grass fiber reinforced epoxy resin hybrid composites. Hand lay-up technique was used to fabricate the composites. Water absorption, microstructure, tensile properties, flexural properties, and impact strength tests for total fiber contents, 15 wt %, and different water hyacinth and cogon grass fiber ratios (10/0, 8/2, 6/4, 4/6, 2/8, and 0/10) were used to evaluate the investigation's effects. The addition of water hyacinth and cogon grass fiber into epoxy improves tensile, flexural, and impact properties while decreasing water absorption, according to the findings. Using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the microstructure of the composites was analyzed, and surface fracture behavior and the void between the fiber and matrix were observed. © 2022 Institute of physics Publishing. The study was aimed to explore the ethnomathematics in hand gestures of Balinese traditional dances. The scope of ethnomathematics discussed was limited to the geometry object, specifically angles. The object of the study was Pendet Dance, one of the popular traditional dance from Bali which usually perform to welcome the guest in a formal and informal event. The method of the research was a case study in which we deeply analyse the hand gestures in Pendet Dance. The data were gathered from observation of the dance and interview the experts in Balinese Dance. The data were analysed qualitatively using descriptive method. In terms of planning aspect,nuclear power plant(NPP)development needs analyses,consideration,and right decision making due to multi criteria *** study prioritizes the best site development of Indonesian NPPs in terms of 21 social,economic,and technical perspectives which comprise transmission network,oper-ating cost,economic impact,geology,geotechnic,seismology,population density,environment,cooling water,meteorology,hydrology,proximity to hazardous facilities,topography,land use,proximity to wetland,evacu-ation route,security,transportation network,legal consideration,impact of tourism,land ownership,historical places,and public acceptance,all identified to be considerations for the best *** Fuzzy algorithms(Chang’s Extent Analysis and Buckley’s Fuzzy AHP)were used to determine the criteria priorities as well as NPP site feasibility of two locations in *** results found that geology,geotechnic,and seismology(SA1);security(SO1),population density(SA2),environment(SA3),and cooling water(SA4)had the highest priorities among the 21 *** on the 5 top priority criteria,West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan provinces serve as the best candidates for the NPP *** an innovative and novel multi criteria Fuzzy AHP–based decision making(MCDM)approach has been proven to become a useful reference to select NPP sites in Indonesia.

Sm^(3+) ions incorporated Sm_(2)Si_(2)O_(7) crystalline phase formed in the aluminoborosilicate glass matrix synthesized via melting quenching technique followed by heat-treatment process is reported *** preliminary confirmation on the obtained glass ceramics was made through X-ray diffration(XRD) *** of non-bridging oxygens(NBOs) in the glass network and the modes of vibrations of network units we re analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) *** morphology of heat-treated samples at varying temperatures was determined via a field emission scanning electron microscope(FESEM).The absorption studies on heat-treated samples signify the low bandgap values and high Urbach energy values due to improved crystallinity in the glass ***-Ofelt intensity parameters identified for visible absorption transitions follow the trend of Ω_(4)>Ω_(2)>Ω_(6).Excitation and emission studies on heat-treated samples show improvement in their intensities compared to the unheated base *** thermal quenching is observed at higher temperatures(540 and 580℃ for 3 h) of heat-treated *** based on luminescence spectra including radiative transition probability,stimulated emission cross-section and branching ratio show good results for glass ceramics prior to precursor *** lifetimes of Sm^(3+) ions(milliseconds) in the level ^(4)G_(5/2) are seen for glass *** coordinates suggest the reddish-orange emissions from prepared glass ***,Sm^(3+) doped Sm_(2)Si_(2)O_(7) glass ceramics are favorable materials for solid-state lighting and laser applications.
