The objective of this study was to compare and correlate the Portable Ultra Sound (US) measuring technique to the skinfold measuring technique (SF) to estimate body fat percentage (%F) in young adults. Sixty military were evaluated, all males, divided in two groups: Group 1 (normal) composed by 30 military with Body Mass Index (BMI) until 24.99 kg/m(2) and Group 2 (overweight) composed by 30 military with BMI > 25 kg/m(2). Weight, height, skinfolds and ultrasound were measured in 9 points (triceps, subscapular, biceps, chest, medium axillary, abdominal, suprailiac, thigh and calf). Body fat average values obtained by skinfold thickness and ultrasound measurements were 13.25 +/- 6.32 % and 12.73 +/- 5.95 % respectively. Despite significant differences in measurements of each anatomical site, it was possible to verify that the total final body fat percentage calculated by both techniques did not present significant differences and that overweight group presented greater similarity between the values obtained using caliper and ultrasound equipment.

This study aimed to test a protocol of measurements based on Biophotogrammetry to Analysis of Respiratory Mechanics (BARM) in healthy children. Seventeen normal spirometric children (six male and 11 female) were tested. Their performed maneuvers of forced inspiratory vital capacity were recorded in the supine position. The images were acquired by a digital camera, laterally placed to the trunk. Surface markers allowed that the files, exported to CorelDraw (R) software, were processed by irregular trapezoids paths. Compartments were defined in the thoracic (TX), abdominal (AB) and the chest wall (CW). They were defined at the end of an inspiration and expiration, both maximum, controlled by a digital spirometer. The result showed that the measured areas at the inspiratory and expiratory periods were statistically different (p<0.05). It reflects the mobility of CW and compartments. In conclusion, the proposed method can identify the breathing pattern of the measured subject using images in two dimensions (2D).

This paper presents numerically tractable strict and non-strict linear matrix inequality conditions to the internal stability analysis of 2-D singular discrete-time systems. Two classes of 2-D singular systems are considered: (i) a general singular Fornasini-Marchesini model, and (ii) a singular Roesser model. In addition, the proposed conditions also guarantee that the 2-D singular system is acceptable and jump modes free. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed approach.

Artificial bee colony (ABC) is an optimization algorithm inspired on the intelligent behavior of honey bee swarms. It is suitable to be applied when mathematical techniques are impractical or provide suboptimal solutions. As a population-based algorithm, the ABC suffers on large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For that we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the opposition-based ABC algorithm (HPOABC) that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Numerical simulations using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity. Additionally, synthesis results point outs that the HPOABC architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper considers the problem of the compensation of an unknown dead zone in the input of a plant. A new compensation method is presented based on the estimation of an equivalent input disturbance (EID). Unlike other methods, this method does not require the exact information of a dead zone. First, we consider the dead zone as an input-dependent disturbance and employ an EID estimator to estimate it. Then, we incorporate the estimate in the control input and compensate the effect of the dead zone almost completely. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the method. In recent years many works related to the design of block-based transceivers have been published. The main target of this research activity is to optimize the use of the spectral resources in broadband transmissions. A possible way to address this problem is to reduce the amount of redundancy required by block transmissions to avoid interblock interference. An efficient solution is to employ zero-padding zero-jamming (ZP-ZJ) transceivers, which allow the transmission with reduced redundancy. ZP-ZJ systems have been successfully employed in the context of linear transceivers. This paper shows how the ZP-ZJ concept can be applied in decisionfeedback equalization. Some performance analyses based on the resulting mean-square error and error probability of symbols are included to show the possible degrading effects of the reduction in the amount of redundancy. Nevertheless, simulation results illustrate that data throughput and average mutual information between transmitted and estimated symbols can be enhanced significantly without affecting the system performance, for a certain level of signal-tonoise ratio at the receiver.
