This paper is concerned with the observer design for one-dimensional class of nonisothermal tubular reactors considering in-domain pointwise measurements of temperature over the entire spatial domain. A Lyapunov-based design method is derived for the PDE system providing sufficient conditions, in the form of standard linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), for the exponential convergence of the estimation error with a given decay rate. The approach is applied and tested with a representative case of a tubular reactor with non-monotonic kinetics satisfying the sufficient solvability conditions. Simulation results support the effectiveness of the suggested design.

For semilinear parabolic PDE systems, the sampled-data observer (SDO) design under spatially point measurements (SPMs) with exponential time-varying gains is concerned. On basis of a Lyapunov functional, a SDO with exponential time-varying gains under SPMs via linear matrix inequalities is presented to guarantee the exponential stability of estimation error PDE system. Lastly, two numerical examples are provided to support the proposed SDO design approach.

This paper considers the sampled-data observer design problem of space-varying distributed parameter systems（DPSs）. By utilizing a Lyapunov functional, a sampled-data observer design is developed by spatial linear matrix inequalities（SLMIs） to guarantee the exponential stability for the estimation error DPS. Furthermore, to solve SLMIs, the sampled-data observer design for space-varying DPSs is formulated as an LMI feasibility problem. Lastly, simulation results of a numerical example are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

y associating active learning methodologies and digital media as a form to improve educational quality, the diversity of experimentations in engineering education has been motivating researches in many areas with possibilities of increasing both students' knowledge and skills. control engineering is an area where educational laboratories are usually costly, thus the use of virtual laboratories for remote experimentation became an interesting approach. In this work, it is presented a remote experimentation procedure for the ball and beam system, which is a nonlinear and unstable open loop process. Considering the advanced control topic, multiobjective optimization was introduced in the experiment in order to tune Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers. Through the description of the system model, the multiobjective optimization technique, and the experiment configuration, students can simulate and test their controllers remotely in a real plant. © 2019 IEEE.

The electric energy produced by photovoltaic systems is a function of several variables that present random behavior, such as solar irradiance, ambient temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. Several models describe the energy produced by these systems, which reflect the various factors that influence the generation and how significant these influences are. In this way, the present work aims to compare some panel temperature models and the electrical energy produced from a photovoltaic system located in the Midwest of Brazil. The applied methodology aims to evaluate the expected averages and standard deviations of the monthly synthetic series of generated energy to identify the main random variables that influence the electric generation. The results indicate the model that best describes the physical system concerning the randomness of the variables involved, the photovoltaic technology, the location, and the measurement period. © 2021, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). A Machine Learning Method for Vehicle Classification by Inductive Waveform Analysis ⁎

The classification of vehicles is a matter of great importance for traffic control and management, helping with traffic surveillance as well as in statistical data collection. Among the several vehicular classification techniques, the most popular uses inductive loop sensors, because they achieve high accuracy rate at low cost. This paper proposes 5 different vehicle classification models by inductive waveform analysis: KNN, SVC, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and Voting Classifier. A brief introduction to the mathematical basis of these models and the main forms of vehicle detection are also presented. The obtained results reached an accuracy of 94% and showed how inductive waveform analysis is still a valid option for vehicle classification.

Laminated composites are the most frequently used component materials in manufacturing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in research centers or start-up industries. On a laboratory scale, laminated composites are fabricated by relying on technicians' skills due to the involvement of manual processes. Nondestructive testing (NDT) is needed to guarantee the structural integrity of the final product of laminated composites. The work proposes a programmable portable ultrasonic for nondestructive testing (NDT) to detect a potential defect due to foreign object contamination of fabrication layers of laminate composite. The proposed programmable NDT system is built using open-board devices; therefore, it could be developed cost-effectively compared to a commercial NDT system. The proposed NDT can measure and analyze a pattern of A-scan signal as a function of foreign object contamination material. Based on a C-scan image, the proposed NDT system could also be programmed to detect the size area of potential defects due to foreign object contamination. Two types of specimens, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP), were tested to evaluate the performance of the developed NDT system. Testing aims to identify artificial defects intentionally placed within these specimens. The proposed portable ultrasonic NDT effectively detects CFRP and GFRP defects on A-mode and C-scan images. Therefore, the proposed portable ultrasonic NDT is an affordable system that can be developed in a laboratory workshop for quality control in laboratory-scale fabrication of laminated composites.

With the massive increase in electricity consumption, technologies that help the production and distribution of this resource became indispensable. In particular, distribution becomes a major challenge when taking into account alternative sources through Distributed Generation. In this view, this paper aims to survey the main contributions related to the application of intelligent solutions in the process of electricity distribution. Through a systematic literature review, a comparative analysis of the most relevant work on the target topic is performed considering the application of Smart Grid principles. The methodology adopted in the literature review and the main results are presented by means of a six group categorization, namely: communication in electrical structures, computational modeling, load control, microgrids, energy storage, and economic viability. © European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). This paper presents a procedure to estimate a homogeneous equivalent resistivity for typical transmission line tower ground arrangements that are immersed in a stratified soil model. This technique is based on artificial neural network training due to a dataset developed in a numerical routine to compute grounding resistance. The results obtained from Levemberg-Marquadt algorithm and Bayesian regularization show good accuracy compared to the applied dataset and to the measurement data from a 230 kV transmission line, a practical case analyzed. We note medians lower than 5% and acceptable values of standard deviation for practical cases, which suggests that the proposed procedure can be used for real-world conditions.
