In this paper, we investigate the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted aerial communications, where a ground base station (GBS) communicates with distant terrestrial and/or aerial users through the assistance of a RIS-equipped unmanned aerial vehicle (RIS-UAV). The GBS uses the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme to transmit its signal, which is directed to the users via the RIS-UAV. First, the end-to-end channel is characterized, by considering the shadowed Rician fading, then the outage probability performance metric is derived for the underlying system model. Through numerical results, we demonstrate the impact of several system parameters on the performance of NOMA users. Specifically, we found that RIS elements need to be carefully allocated among different NOMA users, according to their channel conditions, in order to achieve the needed quality of service.

5G communication systems provide an end-to-end wireless connection to billions of users and devices across the globe. The quality of signals received during radio communication is notably influenced by the behavior of the radio propagation channel. A major parameter used in characterizing this channel is the Path Loss Exponent (PLE). Several works that have estimated and analyzed the PLE mostly considered the effect of distance and carrier frequency. However, the effect of base station antenna height and channel bandwidth on the PLE for 5G networks have not been adequately considered. To address this, the impact of antenna height of base station and channel bandwidth on the PLE within the 5G Frequency Range 1 (FR1) frequencies was investigated in this study, specifically at 800, 3500, and 5900 MHz. The licensed EDX Signal Pro software® with Cirrus high resolution global terrain and clutter data base was utilized to model, simulate and analyze the PLE for Kano City, Nigeria. Results showed that for the tested frequencies, an increase in either base station height or channel bandwidth leads to a significant reduction in the PLE. This study can be utilized by network planning engineers and the wireless research community to further improve network implementation and optimization toward understanding the behavior of signal propagation in 5G networks and beyond. © 2023 IEEE.

5G communications systems offer several types of service groups include enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC), and massive machine-type communications (mMTC). The ability to meet various mobile communications requirements of different users is ensured by these service groups. In this paper, a novel service type priority decision method is proposed for 5G and beyond (5GB) systems to determine the most needed service group under a specific region. This approach is useful for the resource allocation planning and optimization through a coverage region. The proposed method is based on the machine learning (ML) usage with several ambient information. Instance-based and model-based techniques are compared for ML. Also, the ensemble methods are tested on the generated synthetic dataset.

Imperfections in requirement specification can cause serious issues during software development life cycle. It might bring about inferior quality products due to missing attributes, for example, security. Specifically, Web Applications are considered as obvious target for getting significant information. Security aspects have gotten hard to manage in web applications because security requirements are not regularly seen appropriately and often details are missing which lead into ill-characterized security-related aspects. With the help of systemic literature review (SLR), we have identified 32 major research works which were published in period of year 2010 to 2020. We identified 38 security-related aspects of web applications and also 13 techniques and tools for security related aspects in agile requirement specification. We have also analyzed 22 challenges in reviewing security related aspects in agile development life cycle.

Concealing Sensitive Samples against Gradient Leakage in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) is a distributed learning paradigm that enhances users’ privacy by eliminating the need for clients to share raw, private data with the server. Despite the success, recent studies expose the vulnerability of FL to model inversion attacks, where adversaries reconstruct users’ private data via eavesdropping on the shared gradient information. We hypothesize that a key factor in the success of such attacks is the low entanglement among gradients per data within the batch during stochastic optimization. This creates a vulnerability that an adversary can exploit to reconstruct the sensitive data. Building upon this insight, we present a simple, yet effective defense strategy that obfuscates the gradients of the sensitive data with concealed samples. To achieve this, we propose synthesizing concealed samples to mimic the sensitive data at the gradient level while ensuring their visual dissimilarity from the actual sensitive data. Compared to the previous art, our empirical evaluations suggest that the proposed technique provides the strongest protection while simultaneously maintaining the FL performance. Recently, global photovoltaic (PV) system installations have surged. Precise forecasting is vital for their grid integration and carbon emission cuts. However, due to fluctuating solar radiation, predicting PV output is difficult. Machine learning models, notably Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, offer a solution. This study presents a novel framework using a boosted recursive Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM)-LSTM network to forecast daily PV output at hourly intervals. Conducted in Northern Europe—a region with significant solar radiation variability—the models trained on meteorological and historical data showed a 12% improvement in RMSE, a 13% reduction in MAPE, and a 5% increase in the R 2 score compared to standalone LSTM models.

Given the increasingly serious security threats faced by embedded systems, an analysis has been conducted on the characteristics and vulnerabilities of embedded systems. Detailed discussions are provided on security threats faced by embedded systems from two major aspects: hardware-based attacks such as side-channel attacks, hardware Trojans, fault injection, microprobes, and hardware reverse engineering, and software attacks aimed at damaging, tampering, and stealing. The analysis includes existing security measures both domestically and internationally, highlighting their shortcomings. Based on the concept of trusted computing, the paper offers future research suggestions from several perspectives, including theoretical research models, trusted measurement, trusted reporting, trusted sharing, and isolation of resources. Finally, an ideal comprehensive joint security enhancement scheme is proposed, and future research directions are discussed. © 2025 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) enable many applications for photovoltaic (PV) equipped nano-grids. Stored excessive energy is utilized for energy arbitrage, demand response during blackouts, and peak shaving. This technology helped utility service providers deal with the duck-curve-effect and intermittency of renewable energy systems. In this paper, we investigate the benefits of using energy storage systems in PV nano-grids for residential sectors and evaluate the relationship between battery presence and system performance. We also analyze the effects of battery degradation on energy independence and self-sufficiency and investigate the relationship between simple payback time and state of health (SoH) levels of nano-grid components. Additionally, we propose a simple rule-based energy supervision strategy and evaluate its performance under various forecasting error levels, highlighting the importance of high-performance forecasting methods for proper energy management systems. Our contributions will help select and optimize PV-battery solutions and energy management algorithms to achieve the highest benefit and minimize investment risks.

In an era of heightened digital interconnectedness, businesses increasingly rely on third-party vendors to enhance their operational capabilities. However, this growing dependency introduces significant security risks, making it crucial to develop a robust framework to mitigate potential vulnerabilities. This paper proposes a comprehensive secure framework for managing third-party vendor risk, integrating blockchain technology to ensure transparency, traceability, and immutability in vendor assessments and interactions. By leveraging blockchain, the framework enhances the integrity of vendor security audits, ensuring that vendor assessments remain up-to-date and tamperproof. This proposed framework leverages smart contracts to reduce human error while ensuring real-time monitoring of compliance and security controls. By evaluating critical security controls—such as data encryption, access control mechanisms, multi-factor authentication, and zero-trust architecture—this approach strengthens an organization’s defense against emerging cyber threats. Additionally, continuous monitoring enabled by blockchain ensures the immutability and transparency of vendor compliance processes. In this paper, a case study on iHealth’s transition to AWS Cloud demonstrates the practical implementation of the framework, showing a significant reduction in vulnerabilities and marked improvement in incident response times. Through the adoption of this blockchain-enabled approach, organizations can mitigate vendor risks, streamline compliance, and enhance their overall security posture. Our findings highlight the importance of employing blockchain to enforce security controls and maintain compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA.
