Low rank tensor ring based data recovery algorithms have been widely used in data-driven consumer electronics to recover missing data entries in the collecting data pre-processing stage for providing stable and reliable service. However, traditional recovery methods often fail to utilize the abundant prior knowledge of data and the non-local self-similarity of the data, thus leading to the failure to effectively capture the spatial relationships within high-dimensional data to recover them accurately. To address these problems, we present a novel Non-local Self-similarity and Low-rank Prior Knowledge based tensor ring completion method. Firstly, we incorporate the BM3D denoising operator within a Plug-and-Play framework to exploit the self-similarity in the data. Then a logarithmic determinant function is integrated to distinguish singular values in the cyclic unfolding matrix of the tensor and adopts a tensor ring completion approach based on weighted nuclear norms. Finally, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we conducted a series of experiments by using the missing image dataset and the missing traffic data dataset respectively, and the experimental results show that our method achieves the highest level in terms of data recovery accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

Distributed Denial of services (DDoS) attack is one of the most dangerous attacks that targeted servers. The main consequence of this attack is to prevent users from getting their legitimate services by bringing down targeted victim. CICFlowMeter tool generates bi-directional flows from packets. Each flow generates 83 of different features. The research focuses on 8 features which are active min (f1), active mean (f2), active max (f3), active std (f4), idle min (f5), idle mean (f6), idle max (f7), and idle std (f8). CICFlowMeter tool has several problems that affected on the detection accuracy of DDoS attacks. The idle and active based feature of Shannon entropy and sequential probability ratio test (SE-SPRT) approach was implemented in this research. The problems of original CICFlowMeter were presented, and the differences between original and revised version of CICFlowMeter tool were explored. The DARPA database and confusion matrix were used to evaluate the detection technique and present the comparison between two versions of CICFlowMeter. The detection method detected neptune and smurf attacks and had higher accuracy, f1-score, sensitivity, specificity, and precision when revised version of CICFlowMeter used to generate flows. However, the detection method failed to detect neptune attack and had higher miss-rate, lower accuracy, lower f1-score, and lower specificity, and lower precision when original version used in generating flows.

Modern programming languages, such as Java, use exception-handling mechanisms to guarantee the robustness of software systems. Although important, the quality of exception code is usually poor and neglected by developers. Indiscriminate robustness changes (e.g., the addition of empty catch blocks) can indicate design decisions that negatively impact the internal quality of software systems. As it is known in the literature, multiple occurrences of poor code structures, namely code smells, are strong indicators of design problems. Still, existing studies focus mainly on the correlation of maintainability smells with design problems. However, using only these smells may not be enough since developers need more context (e.g., system domain) to identify the problems in certain scenarios. Moreover, these studies do not explore how changes in the exceptional code of the methods combined with maintainability smells can give complementary evidence of design problems. By covering both regular and exception codes, the developer can have more context about the system and find complementary code smells that reinforce the presence of design problems. This work aims to leverage the identification of design problems by tracking poor robustness changes combined with maintainability smells. We investigated the correlation between robustness changes and maintainability smells on the commit history of more than 160k methods from different releases of 10 open-source software systems. We observed that maintainability smells can be worsened or even introduced when robustness changes are performed. This scenario mainly happened for the smells Feature Envy, Long Method, and Dispersed Coupling. We also analyzed the co-occurrence between robustness and maintainability smells. We identified that the empty catch block and catch throwable robustness smells were the ones that co-occurred the most with maintainability smells related to the Concern Overload and Misplaced Concern design problems. Human-computer interaction (HCI) is an evolving field of research that focuses on understanding and improving the communication and interaction between humans and computers. Over the past decades, we have seen many significant advances in this field, which have contributed to the widespread adoption and integration of technology into our daily lives. HCI research and development aims to design information technology systems to meet the needs and preferences of users. Usability, efficiency, accessibility and user satisfaction are important considerations in HCI design. This paper presents the results of a pilot study on user acceptance of HCIs. The results show that users are positive about and willing to use HCIs.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) significantly enhances adaptive learning by personalizing and tailoring instruction to individual student needs. AI analyzes data in real-time to create personalized learning paths based on students' strengths, weaknesses, and preferences, which keeps students engaged and motivated. A major benefit of AI in adaptive learning is the provision of real-time feedback and assessment, allowing students to correct mistakes promptly and understand concepts more thoroughly. AI-based intelligent tutoring systems are primarily intended to simulate personalized tutoring processes that guide students in complex problem-solving and answering questions. It is convenient in teaching mathematics, sciences, and languages. AI also supports inclusive education, dealing with diversified learning requirements and styles, such as those of learners with disabilities. For the teacher, AI acts as a reflector of student performance so that one can intervene early and make adjustments in the method of instruction by creating effective learning environments. AI technology is a field in constant development and harbors the potential to change the face of adaptive learning, bringing an upswing in educational outcomes. This article will summarize the advantages and features that merit improvement of the AI-embedded adaptive learning systems with student feedback.

Autonomous driving requires precise and efficient point clouds processing techniques, where deep learning has shown great potential. Nonetheless, most of the existing works achieve high accuracy in synthetic data while performing unsatisfactorily in real-world datasets. On the other hand, though existing multi-view-based, volumetric-based, and point-based methods have achieved promising results, they still suffer from high computational complexity or low memory utilization efficiency. For example, the computational time and memory consumption of multi-view-based and volumetric-based methods increase at most cubically with the increasing of the input resolution, while half of the point-based methods's runtime is wasted due to their irregular memory access. To address these issues, we propose a novel method to fuse complementary CNNs, dubbed as Multi-Branch Convolutional Neural Networks (MBCNN), which achieves the current state-of-the-art performance while maintaining high efficiency. The underlying design of MBCNN is to utilize the point-based convolution as a local-feature branch and spherical convolution as a global-feature branch, to capture patterns in space and exploit the merit of the pointwise MLP, which is robust to the perturbation. Besides, we design an efficient voxel-based indexing technique to prevent the feature-extracting phase from being blocked, thus significantly accelerating the procedure of finding a point's neighbor. Experimental results show that MBCNN achieves state-of-the-art performance on the real-world 3D point clouds dataset while reducing 30% of runtime in neighbor indexing. © 2021 IEEE.

Public policy-making has a strong impact on our daily lives and on most of the aspects of our society including its relation with the environment. Sustainability as a global goal cannot be achieved without effective policies supporting it. The current trend in policy-making has two main pillars, policies are a) co-created with citizens and other relevant stakeholders and b) data-based to take informed decisions. Information technologies are needed to support these pillars and facilitate evidence-based policy-making. We present the DECIDO Portal that acts as a catalyst towards putting these general principles into practice gathering the technical components to be used within the whole policy life cycle. Notably, the portal lays its foundations on a well-defined co-creation methodology that can be seamlessly followed from a unique portal and provides best-practices for participatory processes and data-driven analyses. A set of real-world experimental policies in different countries serves as case studies to showcase and discuss the usage of the portal.

The paper discusses the integration and use of generative artificial intelligence technologies in education. Generative AI, such as OpenAI, in particular the GPT model, has fundamentally changed the way humans interact with machines. Advanced technologies in the field of generative AI in education are mostly used to personalize learning experiences by dynamically customizing learning materials according to the needs of learners, thus enabling the improvement of outcomes. This article explores the use of generative AI tools with the aim of assessing how useful students perceive these tools to be. The findings show mixed receptivity from users, highlighting the critical balance in using innovative AI capabilities through AI.

Automatic Vehicle Trajectory Data Reconstruction at Scale

In this paper we propose an automatic trajectory data reconciliation to correct common errors in vision-based vehicle trajectory data. Given "raw" vehicle detection and tracking information from automatic video processing algorithms, we propose a pipeline including (a) an online data association algorithm to match fragments that describe the same object (vehicle), which is formulated as a min-cost network circulation problem of a graph, and (b) a one-step trajectory rectification procedure formulated as a quadratic program to enhance raw detection data. The pipeline leverages vehicle dynamics and physical constraints to associate tracked objects when they become fragmented, remove measurement noises and outliers and impute missing data due to fragmentations. We assess the capability of the proposed two-step pipeline to reconstruct three benchmarking datasets: (1) a microsimulation dataset that is artificially downgraded to replicate upstream errors, (2) a 15-min NGSIM data that is manually perturbed, and (3) tracking data consists of 3 scenes from collections of video data recorded from 16-17 cameras on a section of the I-24 MOTION system, and compare with the corresponding manually-labeled ground truth vehicle bounding boxes. All of the experiments show that the reconciled trajectories improve the accuracy on all the tested input data for a wide range of measures. Lastly, we show the design of a software architecture that is currently deployed on the full-scale I-24 MOTION system consisting of 276 cameras that covers 4.2 miles of I-24. Breast cancer is a significant global healthcare challenge, particularly in developing and underdeveloped countries, with profound physical, emotional, and psychological consequences, including mortality. Timely diagnosis and accurate treatment are crucial in addressing this issue. We propose the utilization of a feature selection technique to identify the most relevant features from among all features for breast cancer diagnosis, and show that Genetic Algorithms are impressive for this task. The study compares the results of GA with no selection and an alternative method, Principle Component Analysis (PCA). Three machine learning models, all based on supervised learning with data split into training and test data, are employed for binary classification using the selected feature subset. The evaluation metrics employed encompass accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Among the selected models, Random Forest demonstrates the most favorable outcomes, achieving an accuracy score of 0.96, precision score of 0.96, recall value of 0.98, and an F1-score of 0.97. These results underscore the effectiveness of GA in feature selection for breast cancer diagnosis. Consequently, the integration of Genetic Algorithms (GA) with Random Forest showcases the superior performance among the evaluated models.
