In mobile edge computing (MEC), task offloading can significantly reduce task execution latency and energy consumption of end user (EU). However, edge server (ES) resources are limited, necessitating efficient allocation to ensure the sustainable and healthy development for MEC systems. In this paper, we propose a dynamic pricing mechanism based near-optimal resource allocation for elastic edge offloading. First, we construct a resource pricing model and accordingly develop the utility functions for both EU and ES, the optimal pricing model parameters are derived by optimizing the utility functions. In the meantime, our theoretical analysis reveals that the EU’s utility function reaches a local maximum within the search range, but exhibits barely growth with increased resource allocation beyond this point. To this end, we further propose the Dynamic Inertia and Speed-Constrained particle swarm optimization (DISC-PSO) algorithm, which efficiently identifies the near-optimal resource allocation. Comprehensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of DISC-PSO, demonstrating that it significantly outperforms existing schemes by reducing the average number of iterations to reach a near-optimal solution by 92.11%, increasing the final user utility function value by 0.24%, and decreasing the variance of results by 95.45%. Fifth-generation and beyond (5G and xG) wireless networks are envisioned to meet the requirements of vertical applications like high traffic throughput, ultra-massive connectivity, extremely low latency, and high quality of service. Disruptive technologies, such as massive multiple-input multiple-output, millimeter wave, and multiple access are being deployed to meet these requirements. However, their deployment poses several challenges, including a lack of network transparency, management decentralization, and reliability. Moreover, the heterogeneity of future networks raises security concerns, e.g., confidentiality, privacy, and trustworthiness. Indeed, due to the emergence of novel paradigms, e.g., quantum computing, traditional security approaches are no longer sufficient to protect over-the-air communications. Hence, 5G/xG networks must consider smart security techniques to operate seamlessly and efficiently. Within this context, physical layer security (PLS) and blockchain represent promising solutions to complement existing methods. By exploiting the characteristics of wireless links, PLS can enhance the security of communications, while blockchain may enable networks’ decentralization, integrity, and trustworthiness. Motivated by these advancements, we provide an in-depth review of the existing PLS and blockchain literature. Then, for the first time in the literature, we present a framework to integrate PLS with blockchain in 5G/xG systems. We first provide a thorough discussion about the potential of PLS and blockchain for 5G/xG systems. Then, we present our vision of a cross-layer architecture that leverages PLS and blockchain. Through a case study, we demonstrate the high potential of cross-layer design to improve the security of vehicular networks. Subsentence extraction from text using coverage-based deep learning language models

Sentiment prediction remains a challenging and unresolved task in various research fields, including psychology, neuroscience and computer science. This stems from its high-degree of subjectivity and limited input sources that can effectively capture the actual sentiment. This can be even more challenging with only text-based input. Meanwhile, the rise of deep learning and an unprecedented large volume of data have paved the way for artificial intelligence to perform impressively accurate predictions or even human-level reasoning. Drawing inspiration from this, we propose a coverage-based sentiment and subsentence extraction system that estimates a span of input text and recursively feeds this information back to the networks. The predicted subsentence consists of auxiliary information expressing a sentiment. This is an important building block for enabling vivid and epic sentiment delivery (within the scope of this paper) and for other natural language processing tasks such as text summarisation and Q&A. Our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches by a large margin in subsentence prediction (i.e., Average Jaccard scores from 0.72 to 0.89). For the evaluation, we designed rigorous experiments consisting of 24 ablation studies. Finally, our learned lessons are returned to the community by sharing software packages and a public dataset that can reproduce the results presented in this paper. © 2021, CC BY.

Automotive Simulation is a potentially cost-effective strategy to identify and test corner case scenarios in automotive perception. Recent work has shown a significant shift in creating realistic synthetic data for road traffic scenarios using a video graphics engine. However, a gap exists in modeling realistic optical aberrations associated with cameras in automotive simulation. This paper builds on the concept from existing literature to model optical degradations in simulated environments using the Python-based ray-tracing library KrakenOS. As a novel pipeline, we degrade automotive fisheye simulation using an optical doublet with +/-2◦ Field of View(FOV), introducing realistic optical artifacts into two simulation images from SynWoodscape and Parallel Domain Woodscape. We evaluate KrakenOS by calculating the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), which averaged around 0.023 across the RGB light spectrum compared to Ansys Zemax OpticStudio, an industrial benchmark for optical design and simulation. Lastly, we measure the image sharpness of the degraded simulation using the ISO12233:2023 Slanted Edge Method and show how both qualitative and measured results indicate the extent of the spatial variation in image sharpness from the periphery to the center of the degradations. © 2025, CC BY.

Point Cloud Registration (PCR) is a critical and challenging task in computer vision and robotics. One of the primary difficulties in PCR is identifying salient and meaningful points that exhibit consistent semantic and geometric properties across different scans. Previous methods have encountered challenges with ambiguous matching due to the similarity among patch blocks throughout the entire point cloud and the lack of consideration for efficient global geometric consistency. To address these issues, we propose a new framework that includes several novel techniques. Firstly, we introduce a semantic-aware geometric encoder that combines object-level and patch-level semantic information. This encoder significantly improves registration recall by reducing ambiguity in patch-level superpoint matching. Additionally, we incorporate a prior knowledge approach that utilizes an intrinsic shape signature to identify salient points. This enables us to extract the most salient super points and meaningful dense points in the scene. Secondly, we introduce an innovative transformer that encodes High-Order (HO) geometric features. These features are crucial for identifying salient points within initial overlap regions while considering global high-order geometric consistency. We introduce an anchor node selection strategy to optimize this high-order transformer further. By encoding inter-frame triangle or polyhedron consistency features based on these anchor nodes, we can effectively learn high-order geometric features of salient super points. These high-order features are then propagated to dense points and utilized by a Sinkhorn matching module to identify critical correspondences for successful registration. The experiments conducted on the 3DMatch/3DLoMatch and KITTI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play an increasingly important role in assisting fast-response post-disaster rescue due to their fast deployment, flexible mobility, and low cost. However, UAVs face the challenges of limited battery capacity and computing resources, which could shorten the expected flight endurance of UAVs and increase the rescue response delay during performing mission-critical tasks. To address this challenge, we first present a three-layer post-disaster rescue computing architecture by leveraging the aerial-terrestrial edge capabilities of mobile edge computing (MEC) and vehicle fog computing (VFC), which consists of a vehicle fog layer, a UAV client layer, and a UAV edge layer. Moreover, we formulate a joint task offloading and resource allocation optimization problem (JTRAOP) with the aim of maximizing the time-average system utility. Since the formulated JTRAOP is proved to be NP-hard, we propose an MEC-VFC-aided task offloading and resource allocation (MVTORA) approach, which consists of a game theoretic algorithm for task offloading decision, a convex optimization-based algorithm for MEC resource allocation, and an evolutionary computation-based hybrid algorithm for VFC resource allocation. Simulation results validate that the proposed approach can achieve superior system performance compared to the other benchmark schemes, especially under heavy system workloads. Domain adaptive person re-identification (Re-ID) encounters significant challenges when models trained on one dataset are deployed in new environments. It is particularly critical in engineering applications where surveillance infrastructure must be rapidly adapted to new environments without compromising security system reliability. The problem represents a knowledge-intensive engineering task that requires sophisticated knowledge representation and transfer mechanisms to support automated system reconfiguration decisions. These challenges include preserving fine-grained visual details, handling camera-specific variations, generating reliable pseudo-labels, maintaining consistency across multiple camera views, and managing varying difficulty levels in domain transfer. To address these issues, we propose a novel framework that separates adaptation into intra-domain and cross-domain learning phases. Our approach introduces several key innovations: an adaptive fine-grained network that preserves spatial details while ensuring domain invariance, a memory-guided learning method for stable feature representation, and a hierarchical adaptation strategy for reliable intra-domain learning. Additionally, we incorporate a progressive learning strategy for gradual domain adaptation and a consistency reinforcement mechanism to resolve cross-camera identity conflicts. Experiments on the Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID, and MSMT17 datasets across four domain adaptation tasks show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches, significantly improving both mAP and CMC accuracy. This work contributes to engineering informatics by providing a reliable solution for automating knowledge-intensive tasks across diverse engineering domains, while also laying the foundation for advancements in intelligent surveillance systems and automated decision-making in engineering infrastructures.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as aerial relays are practically appealing for assisting Internet of Things (IoT) network. In this work, we aim to utilize the UAV swarm to assist the secure communication between the micro base station (MBS) equipped with the planar array antenna (PAA) and the IoT terminal devices by collaborative beamforming (CB), so as to counteract the effects of collusive eavesdropping attacks in time-domain. Specifically, we formulate a UAV swarm-enabled secure relay multi-objective optimization problem (US2RMOP) for simultaneously maximizing the achievable sum rate of associated IoT terminal devices, minimizing the achievable sum rate of the eavesdropper and minimizing the energy consumption of UAV swarm, by jointly optimizing the excitation current weights of both MBS and UAV swarm, the selection of the UAV receiver, the position of UAVs and user association order of IoT terminal devices. Furthermore, the formulated US2RMOP is proved to be a non-convex, NP-hard and large-scale optimization problem. Therefore, we propose an improved multi-objective grasshopper algorithm (IMOGOA) with some specific designs to address the problem. Simulation results exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed UAV swarm-enabled collaborative secure relay strategy and demonstrate the superiority of IMOGOA. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. In this article, we explore the technical details of the reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms that were deployed in the largest field test of automated vehicles designed to smooth traffic flow in history as of 2023, uncovering the challenges and breakthroughs that come with developing RL controllers for automated vehicles. We delve into the fundamental concepts behind RL algorithms and their application in the context of self-driving cars, discussing the developmental process from simulation to deployment in detail, from designing simulators to reward function shaping. We present the results in both simulation and deployment, discussing the flow-smoothing benefits of the RL controller. From understanding the basics of Markov decision processes to exploring advanced techniques such as deep RL, our article offers a comprehensive overview and deep dive of the theoretical foundations and practical implementations driving this rapidly evolving field. We also showcase real-world case studies and alternative research projects that highlight the impact of RL controllers in revolutionizing autonomous driving. From tackling complex urban environments to dealing with unpredictable traffic scenarios, these intelligent controllers are pushing the boundaries of what automated vehicles can achieve. Furthermore, we examine the safety considerations and hardware-focused technical details surrounding deployment of RL controllers into automated vehicles. As these algorithms learn and evolve through interactions with the environment, ensuring their behavior aligns with safety standards becomes crucial. We explore the methodologies and frameworks being developed to address these challenges, emphasizing the importance of building reliable control systems for automated vehicles. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Two major fundus imaging types, conventional fundus (CF) imaging and ultrawidefield fundus (UF) imaging, are widely used in ophthalmology. In a typical clinical setting, both imaging methods are used simultaneously to diagnose diseases depending on the case. This study introduced an enhanced method of modality transformation to boost the diagnostic support capabilities of deep-learning models in ophthalmology. The method proposed in this study to translate UF images (UFIs) to CF images (CFIs) can replace the common clinical approach of both imaging methods, thereby reducing financial and temporal burdens on patients. This study learns and transforms the relationship between these modalities using UFI–CFI image pairs obtained from the same patient on the same day to minimize distorted information and accurately convert between different modalities. Our proposed model uses scale-aware registration and gradient-guided translation methods to align the UFI–CFI pairs, The generated CFIs not only enhance the quality of images and better represent the retinal area compared to existing methods but also effectively preserve the disease-related details in UFIs, aiding in the diagnosis. In addition, we optimize the image transformation performance, resulting in an 22% improvement in image quality assessment scales compared with previous methods. Furthermore, we acquired the observation that our results are nearly impossible to discern any differences between the real CFIs and the generated CFIs in the view of ophthalmologists. © 2024, The Authors.
