software rejuvenation has been proposed and demonstrated as a strategy to protect cyber-physical systems (CSPs) against unanticipated and undetectable cyber attacks, but the supporting theory has neglected the effects of modeling uncertainties and disturbances and has assumed the availability of perfect state information from the sensor measurements. This paper addresses these issues by providing sufficient conditions for the successful implementation of software rejuvenation in the face of these real-world considerations. The results are illustrated for a simple position control system.

Emerging industrial platforms such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Industrial Internet (II) in the US and Industrie 4.0 in Europe have tremendously accelerated the development of new generations of Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) that integrate humans and human organizations (H-CPS) with physical and computation processes and extend to societal-scale systems such as traffic networks, electric grids, or networks of autonomous systems where control is dynamically shifted between humans and machines. Although such societal-scale CPS can potentially affect many aspect of our lives, significant societal strains have emerged about the new technology trends and their impact on how we live. Emerging tensions extend to regulations, certification, insurance, and other societal constructs that are necessary for the widespread adoption of new technologies. If these systems evolve independently in different parts of the world, they will ‘hard-wire’ the social context in which they are created, making interoperation hard or impossible, decreasing reusability, and narrowing markets for products and services. While impacts of new technology trends on social policies have received attention, the other side of the coin–to make systems adaptable to social policies–is nearly absent from engineering and computer science design practice. This paper focuses on technologies that can be adapted to varying public policies and presents (1) hard problems and technical challenges and (2) some recent research approaches and opportunities. The central goal of this paper is to discuss the challenges and opportunities for constructing H-CPS that can be parameterized by social context. The focus in on three major application domains: connected vehicles, transactive energy systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles. software rejuvenation has been proposed to guarantee safety of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) against cyber-attacks. Recent work has demonstrated how this method can be applied to more general control problems such as tracking control. Despite this progress, there are still limitations in applying software rejuvenation to real situations where the presence of persistent attacks and physical environment constraints exist. In this paper we address these issues and propose a secure recovery algorithm that can be deployed not only for recovery against persistent attacks but also in situations where physical environment constraints do not allow the system to tolerate any attack. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated with a simulation of a quadrotor landing on the ground during recovery from a persistent attack.

The Role of Masks in Mitigating Viral Spread on Networks

Masks have remained an important mitigation strategy in the fight against COVID-19 due to their ability to prevent the transmission of respiratory droplets between individuals. In this work, we provide a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the impact of mask-wearing. To this end, we propose a novel agent-based model of viral spread on networks where agents may either wear no mask or wear one of several types of masks with different properties (e.g., cloth or surgical). We derive analytical expressions for three key epidemiological quantities: the probability of emergence, the epidemic threshold, and the expected epidemic size. In particular, we show how the aforementioned quantities depend on the structure of the contact network, viral transmission dynamics, and the distribution of the different types of masks within the population. Through extensive simulations, we then investigate the impact of different allocations of masks within the population and trade-offs between the outward efficiency and inward efficiency of the masks. Interestingly, we find that masks with high outward efficiency and low inward efficiency are most useful for controlling the spread in the early stages of an epidemic, while masks with high inward efficiency but low outward efficiency are most useful in reducing the size of an already large spread. Lastly, we study whether degree-based mask allocation is more effective in reducing the probability of epidemic as well as epidemic size compared to random allocation. The result echoes the previous findings that mitigation strategies should differ based on the stage of the spreading process, focusing on source control before the epidemic emerges and on self-protection after the emergence. This paper presents the components of a newly developed Malaysian SMEs - software Process Improvement model (MSME-SPI) that can assess SMEs software development industry in managing and improving their software processes capability. The MSME-SPI is developed in response to practitioner needs that were highlighted in an empirical study with the Malaysian SME software development industry. After the model development, there is a need for independent feedback to show that the model meets its objectives. Consequently, the validation phase is performed by involving a group of software process improvement experts in examining the MSME-SPI model components. Besides, the effectiveness of the MSME-SPI model is validated using an expert panel. Three criteria were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the model namely: usefulness, verifiability, and structure. The results show the model effective to be used by SMEs with minor modifications. The validation phase contributes towards a better understanding and use of the MSME-SPI model by the practitioners in the field. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper we propose a novel approach to identify anomalies in DNS traffic. The traffic time-points data is transformed to a string, which is used by new fast approximate string matching algorithm to detect anomalies. Our approach is generic in its nature and allows fast adaptation to different types of traffic. We evaluate the approach on a large public dataset of DNS traffic based on 10 days, discovering more than order of magnitude DNS attacks in comparison to auto-regression as a baseline. Moreover, the additional comparison has been made including other common regressors such as Linear Regression, Lasso, Random Forest and KNN, all of them showing the superiority of our approach. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Web extension is a software that can be installed on a web browser. A web-extension link is displayed as an icon on the toolbar of the browser. Based on browsing activity, the extension works automatically or by clicking the extension icon depending on the functionalities made in the extension software. In this work, we developed a web extension on Google Chrome browser to verify online texts by simply clicking on an extension button. Upon clicking the button, the underlying algorithm in the extension software retrieves the texts from the current web-page being displayed. Verification and authentication of texts are performed by comparing the retrieved texts with text database. According to the comparison, texts are highlighted in colors. We consider authentication of Arabic Hadith texts for a case study. The authentic Hadith texts are highlighted by green color;authentic texts with partial diacritics, by yellow;and unauthentic texts, by red. This technique can also be used to authenticate laws, constitutions and Government documents in any language. © 2019 IEEE.

This article proposes a new technique to solve optimization problems based on barnacles’ mating behavior namely Barnacles Mating Optimizer (BMO). Barnacles are micro-organisms existed since Jurassic times and they attach themselves to objects in the water and grow shell. They are also known as hermaphroditic micro-organisms and one of the special characters of barnacles is they have long penises which is the longest in animal kingdom relative to their body size. The Hardy-Weinberg principle is adopted in BMO to generate new off-springs and the mating process is performed randomly based on the length of the barnacle’s penis. The effectiveness of BMO is tested through a set of 23 benchmark functions in finding the optimal solutions. Some impactful and reliable results are presented compared with other techniques in this paper. © 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
