We consider the symbolic controller synthesis approach to enforce safety specifications on perturbed, nonlinear control systems. In general, in each state of the system several control values might be applicable to enforce the safety requirement and in the implementation one has the burden of picking a particular control value out of possibly many. We present a class of implementation strategies to obtain a controller with certain performance guarantees. This class includes two existing implementation strategies from the literature, based on discounted payoff and mean-payoff games. We unify both approaches by using games characterized by a single discount factor determining the implementation. We evaluate different implementations from our class experimentally on two case studies. We show that the choice of the discount factor has a significant influence on the average long-term costs, and the best performance guarantee for the symbolic model does not result in the best implementation. Comparing the optimal choice of the discount factor here with the previously proposed values, the costs differ by a factor of up to 50. Our approach therefore yields a method to choose systematically a good implementation for safety controllers with quantitative objectives. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Communication and synchronization of distributed medical models: Design, development, and performance analysis

Model-based development is a widely-used method to describe complex systems that enables the rapid prototyping. Advances in the science of distributed systems has led to the development of large scale statechart models which are distributed among multiple locations. Taking medicine for example, models of best-practice guidelines during rural ambulance transport are distributed across hospital settings from a rural hospital, to an ambulance, to a central tertiary hospital. Unfortunately, these medical models require continuous and real-time communication across individual medical models in physically distributed treatment locations which provides vital assistance to the clinicians and physicians. This makes it necessary to offer methods for model-driven communication and synchronization in a distributed environment. In this paper, we describe ModelSink, a middleware to address the problem of communication and synchronization of heterogeneous distributed models. Being motivated by the synchronization requirements during emergency ambulance transport, we use medical best-practice models as a case study to illustrate the notion of distributed models. Through ModelSink, we achieve an efficient communication architecture, open-loop-safe protocol, and queuing and mapping mechanisms compliant with the semantics of statechart-based model-driven development. We evaluated the performance of ModelSink on distributed sets of medical models that we have developed to assess how ModelSink performs in various loads. Our work is intended to assist clinicians, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), and medical staff to prevent unintended deviations from medical best practices, and overcome connectivity and coordination challenges that exist in a distributed hospital network. Our evaluations are based on real-world case studies done by research community, model-driven software industry, and hospital as the end user. Distributed coordination algorithms (DCA) carry out information processing processes among a group of networked agents without centralized information fusion. Though it is well known that DCA characterized by an SIA (stochastic, indecomposable, aperiodic) matrix generate consensus asymptotically via synchronous iterations, the dynamics of DCA with asynchronous iterations have not been studied extensively, especially when viewed as stochastic processes. This paper aims to show that for any given irreducible stochastic matrix, even non-SIA, the corresponding DCA lead to consensus successfully via random asynchronous iterations under a wide range of conditions on the transition probability. Particularly, the transition probability is neither required to be independent and identically distributed, nor characterized by a Markov chain. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper is concerned with a compositional approach for constructing abstractions of interconnected discrete-time stochastic control systems. The abstraction framework is based on new notions of so-called stochastic simulation functions, using which one can quantify the distance between original interconnected stochastic control systems and their abstractions in the probabilistic setting. Accordingly, one can leverage the proposed results to perform analysis and synthesis over abstract interconnected systems, and then carry the results over concrete ones. In the first part of the paper, we derive sufficient small-gain type conditions for the compositional quantification of the distance in probability between the interconnection of stochastic control subsystems and that of their abstractions. In the second part of the paper, we focus on the class of discrete-time linear stochastic control systems with independent noises in the abstract and concrete subsystems. For this class of systems, we propose a computational scheme to construct abstractions together with their corresponding stochastic simulation functions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed results by constructing an abstraction (totally 4 dimensions) of the interconnection of four discrete-time linear stochastic control subsystems (together 100 dimensions) in a compositional fashion.

While any simulation study starts with a scenario, scenario development is usually conducted in an unstructured and ad hoc manner. In order to streamline scenario development, a formal approach is envisioned in the research flight simulator facility of German Aerospace Center (DLR), namely Air Vehicle Simulator (AVES). System Entity Structure (SES) which is a high level ontology that was introduced to specify a set of system structures and parameter settings is proposed as the foundations. The paper outlines a model-based methodology for scenario development. SES is exploited for metamodeling in order to capture all possible elements of a scenario that can be simulated in AVES. As one of the main focuses of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Academy, Air Traffic Control (ATC) training program heavily relies on simulation-based training and is constantly looking into optimizing the use of such technologies. On the other hand, ATC simulation scenarios are not only used for training purposes, but also are key components for conducting human performance experiments. From a recent visit at the FAA Academy, it is well apparent that there is an immediate need for a diverse pool of ATC training scenarios available to trainees off-site. Currently, training scenarios are generated manually from a subject-matter-expert’s (i.e. controllers) oral or written briefing. The effort in extracting and verifying operational scenarios and translating them into a machine-understandable language is rather cumbersome and currently conducted completely manual. To address these challenges, here we propose to develop a scenario exploration technology that provides a platform for FAA Academy trainees and instructors to exercise variety of scenarios in the ATC domain. The proposed technology provides a platform for instructors and trainees to explore various training exercises. By taking a model-driven approach and extending the recently proposed domain-specific Aviation Scenario Definition Language (ASDL), we provide ATC scenario specification and exploration platform to easily create a variety of ATC scenarios. Similar to ASDL approach, we first define an ontology for ATC extension, then specify scenario logic using a formal specification language such as statechart, and finally, include a metamodel to allow for scenario modeling. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. The 3dimensional (3D) volume imaging in magnetic resonanceimaging (MRI) enables encoding in frequency, phaseand partition directions in k-space. To increase scan speed,subsampling of multiple-coil k-space data is applied. The imagereconstruction problem from subsampled 3D k-space datais non-convex due to the coupling between image and sensitivityprofile of coils. In this paper, it is shown that the magnitudeof 3D image is constrained in a convex hull and thus canbe solved by a two-step convex optimization procedure. Comparedwith other methods, this method directly processes 3Dk-space data without using sensitivity profile of coils. Phantomand in vivo data are used to test the proposed method,resulting in improved reconstructed image with lower meansquared error. © 2016 ACM.

A common issue is that a large number of authorized apps use important and sensitive personal information without arousing users’ full awareness. Existing schemes for privacy protection on smartphones try to provide users with privacy settings to control privacy leakage. Privacy settings on smartphone are intended to inform users about risks of privacy leakage and let users take over control of smartphone. Therefore, it is essential to understand and measure how much users perceive and trust these settings. To this end, we design and conduct a fine-grained online survey with 222 respondents. We collect the demographics as well as users’ smartphone usage, covering not only participants’ basic background information like age, gender, job, but also time of smartphone use per day, respective importance and sensitivity level of personal data, and their smartphone OSs. In this paper, we investigate users’ current privacy perception and protection on smartphone in different groups, discussing participants’ responses to (1) Rating the importance and sensitivity of personal information;(2) Trust on existing privacy protection;(3) Perceived control on smartphone;(4) Frequency of searching privacy knowledge;(5) Concerns about manufacturer and third-party company’s behaviors on personal data and decision. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

High school students typically do not have an understanding of what it takes to successfully transition between the high school and professional world. This paper describes how a group of ten high school students participated in a nine-week software development internship program. The interns worked on developing a semi-autonomous vehicle to be controlled remotely by a ground station. They went through the full development life-cycle using formal agile process. The participants gained experience in project management, and how to negotiate with the customer to reduce the complexity of the project to an achievable scope, given available resources (time, personnel, and cost). © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.
