One of the main disadvantages of population-based evolutionary algorithms (EAs) is their high computational cost due to the nature of evaluation, specially when the population size is large. The micro-algorithms employ a very small number of individuals, which can accelerate the convergence speed of algorithms dramatically, while it highly increases the stagnation risk. One approach to overcome the stagnation problem can be increasing the diversity of the population. To do so, a micro-differential evolution with vectorized random mutation factor (MDEVM) algorithm is proposed in this paper, which utilizes the small size population benefit while preventing stagnation through diversification of the population. The proposed algorithm is tested on the 28 benchmark functions provided at the IEEE congress on evolutionary computation 2013 (CEC-2013). Simulation results on the benchmark functions demonstrate that the proposed algorithm improves the convergence speed of its parent algorithm.

With easy and quick data distribution over the Internet, copyright protection and authentication become important applications of digital watermarking. The image watermarking schemes that are useful to serve these applications should perform well in some of challenging applications such as print-scan and print-cam (PSPC) applications. This challenge provides an impetus for research in the digital watermarking field. In this paper, the performance and the efficiency of several proposed hybrid SVD-based digital image watermarking schemes are evaluated and studied for PSPC as well as for copyright protection and authentication.

Within the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) NextGen project, System Wide Information Management (SWIM) program is the essential core in facilitating the collaborative access to the aviation information by various stakeholders. The Aircraft Access to SWIM (AAtS) is a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that provides the technical platform for the exchange of situational information between the aircraft and the National Airspace System (NAS). In this research project1, we investigate the challenges in one and two way communication between the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) and the SWIM network architecture. EFBs are utilized for allowing aircrafts' access to SWIM through a Data Link Service (DLS) provided by a Data Link Service Provider (DLSP). Issues such as cybersecurity, performance, availability, and quality of service in the AAtS are investigated and mitigation approaches toward more secure and efficient service provided to the aircraft and to NAS are discussed. To this end, a set of comprehensive tests are carried out in an emulated network in a lab environment to identify and assess some of the issues associated with quality of service (QoS) as well as cybersecurity in both wired and wireless connectivity of Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs). This work also aims to assess the efficiency of different approaches in the downlink and uplink data transmission between aircraft and the AAtS system. Nine operational scenarios are identified in AAtS, where they are tested with three technical communication scenarios that are further correlated with messaging patterns using web-services.

The Optimal Power Flow (OPF) routine used in energy control centers allocates individual generator outputs by minimizing the overall cost of generation subject to system level operating constraints. The OPF relies on the outputs of two other modules, namely topology processor and state estimator. The topology processor maps the grid topology based on statuses received from the switches and circuit breakers across the system. The state estimator computes the system state, i.e., voltage magnitudes with phase angles, transmission line flows, and system loads based on real-time meter measurements. However, topology statuses and meter measurements are vulnerable to false data injection attacks. Recent research has shown that such cyber attacks can be launched against state estimation where adversaries can corrupt the states but still remain undetected. In this paper, we show how the stealthy topology poisoning attacks can compromise the integrity of OPF, and thus undermine economic operation. We describe a formal verification based framework to systematically analyze the impact of such attacks on OPF. The proposed framework is illustrated with an example. We also evaluate the scalability of the framework with respect to time and memory requirements.

Transportation of perishable products increased in volume in the last decades and imposes new challenges to today's logistics operations. Because of the spoilage risk of the transported items, certain conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity, vibration, etc.) must be maintained during the transportation phase. Failure to maintain the required conditions may lead to product spoilage and delivery disturbances. This work considers a multi-echelon supply chain model composed of one producer and multiple customers and contrasts the performance of the logistics operations when RFID and sensing technologies are employed and when they are not. The simulation models of the two scenarios result in as much as nine different outcomes, which are presented in the form of good practice recommendations.

In this paper, we propose to capture Action Unit (AU) relations existing in both qualitative knowledge and quantitative data through Credal Networks (CN). Each node of the CN represents an AU label, and the links and probability intervals capture the probabilistic dependencies among multiple AUs. The structure of CN is designed based on prior knowledge. The parameters of CN are learned from both knowledge and ground-truth AU labels. The AU preliminary estimations are obtained by an existing image-driven recognition method. With the learned credal network, we infer the true AU labels by combining the relationships among labels with the previous obtained estimations. Experimental results on the CK+ database and MMI database demonstrate that with complete AU labels, our CN model is slightly better than the Bayesian Network (BN) model, demonstrating that credal sets learned from data can capture uncertainty more reliably;With incomplete and error-prone AU annotations, our CN model outperforms the BN model, indicating that credal sets can successfully capture qualitative knowledge.

The "Girls on the Go: The Mobile Computing College Experience" is a residential summer camp whose aim is to encourage female high school students to attend college, to consider computer science as viable major, and to pursue computing related degrees. The camp content is designed primarily around a user-centered design process, with the students gaining experience in the development of a zoo-themed mobile app. In addition to technical experience, students participate in sessions that educate them on campus life, the admissions process, and more importantly, what a computing-related career may hold for them. The camp was offered in two consecutive summers, with approximately 20 participants in each iteration. In this paper, we compare differences between the two iterations with the intent of identifying both lessons learned and avenues for improving the experience. We investigate whether the camp had an effect on attitudes towards computer science as a major, and on the careers available to computer science graduates. To this end, our analysis revealed a statistically significant effect upon raising awareness of the role of computer scientists and the relevancy of computing for solving real world problems.

Imaging based techniques provide for a way for reconstructing surfaces using Shape from shading algorithms. Adding the convenient approximation of target wave fields by superposition of simple plane waves a new greedy algorithm for reconstruction of water surface is introduced. The algorithm developed optimizes each wave-front for several parameters until the least squares error is minimum. The methodology is illustrated by application to synthetic and real data obtained from the experiments performed in Linear wave lab at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Generalization of approach to non-linear problem of reconstructing water waves from reflectance data modeled by Lambertian reflectance model is demonstrated. Possible improvements including use of Specular reflection model and better optimization techniques are discussed. The approach is observed to be an effective way for reconstructing any kind of water wave field.

Adaptive beam formers employ an array of antennas to achieve maximum reception in a particular direction. The exploitation of spatial separation among user signals originating from different transmitters offers great potential for increased spectrum usage efficiency and system capacity. In this paper, we address the issue of Inphase/Quadrature phase (I/Q) imbalance in adaptive beam forming receivers, which is caused by nonidealities in the receivers' analog front-end. While most of the research on I/Q imbalance focuses on single-antenna receivers, the I/Q imbalance problem for multi-antenna systems received more attention in recent years due to the popularity of Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) scheme. The presented study in this paper concludes that the I/Q imbalance problem in adaptive beam forming receivers may be mitigated via simply increasing the number of antennas, and the I/Q imbalance-induced interference can be considered a special type of co-channel interference. Our conclusion is confirmed by computer simulation results.

EcoCAR 2 is a three year competition sponsored by the Department of Energy, General Motors, and Argonne National Laboratories. The competition encompasses fifteen universities across North America. A 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is donated to each team where it is converted to an electric hybrid vehicle. EcoCAR 2 challenges students to reduce the Malibu's emissions, increase fuel economy, and maintain consumer acceptability. The mission of EcoCAR 2 is to educate the next generation of automotive engineers through an unparalleled hands-on, real-world engineering experience.
