The large-scale systems of systems (SoS) are there to improve the provision of societal services. These are driven by global drivers such as population growth, aging, food security, energy security and climate change. However, a considerable number of SoS projects resulted in failures, causing detrimental economic impact. This paper presents a set of preliminary results from an European Commission (EC) funded project called T-AREA-SoS (Trans-Atlantic Research and Education Agenda on systems of systems). The primary purpose of T-AREA-SoS is to provide input to EC's €80 billion Horizon 2020 research programme in formulating a Strategic Research Agenda for systems of systems engineering (SoSE) that spans American and European activities. An initial set of prioritised SoSE research elements derived from an online survey are discussed from an economic and societal stance using examples from heterogeneous sectors such as transport, energy and manufacturing.

Sparse signal analysis using Ramanujan sums

In this paper, we perform sparse signal analysis by using the Ramanujan Sums (RS). The RS are orthogonal in nature and therefore offer excellent energy conservation. Our analysis shows that the RS can compress the energy of a periodic impulse chain signal into fewer number of RS coefficients than the Fourier transform (FT). In addition, the RS are faster than the FT in computation time because we can calculate the RS basis functions only once and save them to a file. We can retrieve these RS basis functions for our calculation instead of computing them online. To process a signal of 128 samples, we spend 1.0 millisecond for the RS and 5.82 milliseconds for the FT by using our unoptimized Matlab code. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

They will also learn about the revision process and will have the opportunity to provide comment and opinion on drafting an update of the joint ACM and IEEE computer Society document from 2004 titled, “Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in computer engineering” known also as CE2004. The authors of this workshop welcome all participation including overall comments and targeted editing assistance from the computer engineering education community. This activity will ensure that an updated document is a forward-looking summary of state-of-the-art educational practices in the computer engineering field.

The Partnership for Next Generation-Vehicles Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) battery model was used to develop a base-line estimation. Within the HPPC is a method to establish an estimated open circuit voltage (VOC) from a linear calculation of internal resistances and currents. The flexibility of the parameterization was tested over a changing temperature range. Algorithms were developed that predict the VOC and state of charge (SOC) based on the battery's temperature, current draw, terminal voltage, and sampling time step; therefore, increasing the accuracy of the battery parameterization estimator (BPE). Three production vehicles with lithium based battery chemistries were used in the study. A least square method is used as in the PNGV battery model to determine initial parameters; an improvement was shown over this base-line by using a non-linear algorithm. The estimates from both algorithms were compared to the measured data as verification.

Despite over two decades of research, high false alarm rates, large trace sizes and high processing times remain among the key issues in host-based anomaly intrusion detection systems. In an attempt to reduce the false alarm rate and processing time while increasing the detection rate, this paper presents a novel anomaly detection technique based on semantic interactions of system calls. The key concept is to represent system calls as states of kernel modules, analyze the state interactions, and identify anomalies by comparing the probabilities of occurrences of states in normal and anomalous traces. In addition, the proposed technique allows a visual understanding of system behaviour, and hence a more informed decision making. We evaluated this technique on Linux based programs of UNM datasets and a new modern Firefox dataset. We created the Firefox dataset on Linux using contemporary test suites and hacking techniques. The results show that our technique yields fewer false alarms and can handle large traces with smaller (or comparable) processing times compared against the existing techniques for the host based anomaly intrusion detection systems.

Robots for disaster response require a multi-disciplinary engineering approach in order to solve the constraints and requirements of operating within a disaster environment for one or multiple missions. At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the senior capstone design course for the Department of electrical, computer, software, and systems engineering brings together a multi-disciplinary team of students to solve complex engineering problems as part of their capstone senior design experience. During the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 academic years, students were challenged to develop robotic systems for human-robot teaming for the task of post-disaster search-and-rescue. This paper discusses how disaster robotics was used to support project-based learning for these capstone design experience. © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. The software Assurance Metrics and Tool Evaluation (SAMATE) project at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has organized four Static Analysis Tool Expositions (SATE). SATE is designed to advance research in static analysis tools that find security-relevant defects in source code. Briefly, participating tool makers run their tools on a set of programs. Researchers led by NIST analyze the tool outputs. The results and experiences are reported at a workshop. These expositions have accumulated large amounts of data. This collection allowed for the development and validation of practical metrics in regard to static analysis tool effectiveness and independence. In this paper, we discuss the role of the data in determining which metrics can be derived. Specifically, we detail the three characteristics test data should exhibit and explain why the data we use express each combination of two out of these three properties.

The application areas for Unmanned Aircraft (UA) systems (UAS) are constantly expanding. Aside from providing an attractive alternative in applications that are risky for humans, smaller UAS become highly attractive for applications where use of larger aircraft is not practical. This paper presents the UAS Collaboration Wireless Network (UAS-CWN), a secure and reliable UAS communication mesh-network. This solution is proposed for the circumstances where a large number of UAS are deployed to cooperatively accomplish a mission such as surveillance in hostile environments. The proposed UAS-CWN system provides high fault-tolerance through use of information dispersal algorithm and meanwhile reduces the risk of information exposure to the adversaries via security-enhancing mechanisms. Our evaluation shows promising results. Especially, a UAS-CWN with high security-level settings can withstand losing 30% of the total number of unmaned aircrafts while steadily achieving above 96% data recovery rate.

For engineering degree programs, one of the primary objectives is to teach engineering practice in a course-by-course academic structure. Although engineering programs typically have a yearlong senior level design project to provide engineering development experience, it is still a challenge to provide students with the full life-cycle experience and expose them to all of the various dimensions of engineering practice. This paper advocates the development and use of a full life-cycle case study to address such a challenge. A software engineering case study, developed by the authors, and used in various courses and workshops, illustrates the nature, structure and value of this approach. The case study learning objectives emphasize development of engineering practice and acquiring team, problem solving, and analysis skills. The paper also describes how this life-cycle case study can be used throughout a software engineering curriculum.

Natural vision systems still outperform artificial vision systems in terms of generalization. Therefore, many researchers turned to investigate biological vision systems in order to reverse engineer them and implement their principles into artificial vision systems. An important approach for developing a theory of vision is to characterize the visual environment in statistical terms, because this may provide objective yard sticks for evaluating natural vision systems using measures such as, for example, the information transmission rates achieved by natural vision systems. Most such studies focused on characterizing natural luminance images. Here we propose to investigate natural luminance images together with corresponding depth images using information-theoretical measures. We do this using a database of natural images and depth images and find that certain oriented filter responses convey more information about relevant depth features than other oriented filters. More specifically, we find that vertical filter responses are much more informative about gap and orientation discontinuities in the depth images than other filters. We show that this is an inherent property of the investigated visual scenes, and it may serve to explain parts of the oblique effects. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
