According to the Model-Driven Development (MDD) paradigm, analysts can substantially improve the software dev elopment process concentrating their efforts on a conceptual model. This conceptual model can be transformed into code b y means of tr ansformation rules applied by a model compiler. MDD tools are v ery useful to draw conceptu al models and to automate the code generation. Even though this would bring many benefits, wide adoption of MDD tools is not yet a reality. Various research activities are being undertaken to find wh y and to provide the required solutions. However, insufficient research has been done on a key factor for the acceptance of MDD tools: usability. With the help of end-us ers, this paper presents a framework to evaluate the usability of MDD tools. The framework will be used as a basis for a family of experiments to get clear insights into the barriers to usability that prevent MDD tools from being widely adopted in industry. © 2011 Actas del XII Congreso Internacional de Interaccion Persona-Ordenador, INTERACCION 2011. Due to increase in number and complexity of the large scale systems, performance monitoring and multidimensional quality of service (QoS) management has become a difficult and error prone task for system administrators. Recently, the trend has been to use virtualization technology, which facilitates hosting of multiple distributed systems with minimum infrastructure cost via sharing of computational and memory resources among multiple instances, and allows dynamic creation of even bigger clusters. An effective monitoring technique should not only be fine grained with respect to the measured variables, but also should be able to provide a high level overview of the distributed systems to the administrator of all variables that can affect the QoS requirements. At the same time, the technique should not add performance burden to the system. Finally, it should be integrated with a control methodology that manages performance of the enterprise system. In this paper, a systematic distributed event based (DEB) performance monitoring approach is presented for distributed systems by measuring system variables (physical/virtual CPU utilization and memory utilization), application variables (application queue size, queue waiting time, and service time), and performance variables (response time, throughput, and power consumption) accurately with minimum latency at a specified rate. Furthermore, we have shown that proposed monitoring approach can be utilized to provide input to an application monitoring utility to understand the underlying performance model of the system for a successful on-line control of the distributed systems for achieving predefined QoS parameters.

The notion of incremental stability was proposed by several researchers as a strong property of dynamical and control systems. Incremental stability describes the convergence of trajectories with respect to themselves, rather than with respect to an equilibrium point or a particular trajectory. Similarly to stability, Lyapunov functions play an important role in the study of incremental stability. In this paper, we propose new notions of incremental Lyapunov functions which are coordinate independent and provide the description of incremental stability in terms of the proposed Lyapunov functions. Moreover, we develop a backstepping design approach providing a recursive way of constructing controllers, enforcing incremental stability, as well as incremental Lyapunov functions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by synthesizing a controller rendering a single-machine infinitebus electrical power system incrementally stable.

The assignment of fixed priorities to tasks and messages in distributed real-time systems is known to be an NP-hard problem, and thus there is no optimal method to accomplish it in polynomial time. This fact makes it a suitable problem to be approached with generic search and optimization algorithms. In this paper we propose a genetic algorithm with a permutational solution encoding for the assignment of fixed priorities to tasks and messages in distributed real-time systems using a holistic approach. This paper shows that the genetic algorithm can find more and better schedulable priority assignments than HO PA, which is, as far as we know, one of the best methods for the fixed priority assignment in distributed real-time systems.

A remaining useful life prediction algorithm and degradation model for electrolytic capacitors is presented. Electrolytic capacitors are used in several applications ranging from power supplies on critical avionics equipment to power drivers for electro-mechanical actuators. These devices are known for their low reliability and given their criticality in electronics subsystems they are a good candidate for component level prognostics and health management research. Prognostics provides a way to assess remaining useful life of a capacitor based on its current state of health and its anticipated future usage and operational conditions. In particular, experimental results of an accelerated aging test under electrical stresses are presented. The capacitors used in this test form the basis for a remaining life prediction algorithm where a model of the degradation process is suggested. This preliminary remaining life prediction algorithm serves as a demonstration of how prognostics methodologies could be used for electrolytic capacitors.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) presented the 2010 Fall Symposium Series on November 11-13, 2010. The eight symposia included Cognitive and Metacognitive Educational systems, Commonsense Knowledge, Complex Adaptive systems: Resilience, Robustness, and Evolvability, Computational Models of Narrative, Dialog with Robots, Manifold Learning and Its Applications, Proactive Assistant Agents and Quantum Informatics for Cognitive, Social, and Semantic Processes. Cognitive and Metacognitive Educational systems aimed to provide a comprehensive definition of metacognitive educational systems that is inclusive of the theoretical, architectural, and educational aspects of this field. The AAAI Commonsense Knowledge Fall Symposium had the goal of bringing together the diverse elements of this community whose work benefits from or contributes to the representation of general knowledge about the world. One of the specific goals of Proactive symposium was to gather the researchers from various projects in assistant agents to share their wisdom in retrospect.

This paper aims to investigate the scalability of synchronizability for the complex clustering networks of dense rings or chains with the network scale increasing. Our results reveal that the synchronizability of the above complex clustering networks decreases with the network scale increasing for any clustering structures. When the network size is increasing, the increase of the number of clusters decreases the synchronizability much faster than the increase of the size of individual cluster. Moreover, it is found that the ring or the chain structure has much greater influence on weakening the network synchronizability than that of the clustering property. © 2011 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

IEEE 802.16e standard provides wide coverage and high bandwidth for subscribers in a metropolitan area network. It introduces Multicast and Broadcast Rekeying Algorithm (MBRA) which is a multicasting scheme to communicate with many users concurrently. Although ELAPSE (for Efficient sub-Linear rekeying Algorithm with Perfect SEcrecy) improves on the deficiencies of MBRA, the algorithm poorly responds to scalability issue. This paper proposes a Scalable Rekeying Algorithm (SRA) based on a complete binary tree structure. SRA is introduced with linear linked list structure in order to make the system more scalable. Evaluation analysis shows that SRA manages to improve the scalability issue in MBRA for Mobile WiMAX.
