This work proposes a methodology to identify the parameters of a synchronous machine based on the finite element method (FEM). Several offline real-time tests to identify SM parameters are reproduced on a digital platform of a FEM based solver. The proposed methodology is divided into three basic steps: creation of the basic physical geometry of the synchronous machine, development and execution of parameter estimation tests on the digital platform, and post-processing to calculate the parameters from the test results. Simulations are shown for a salient-pole synchronous machine. The proposed method is envisioned to replace the real-time offline tests.

Model-based diagnosis for industrial applications have to be efficient, and deal with modeling approximations and measurement noise. This paper presents a distributed diagnosis scheme, based on Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBNs) that generates globally correct diagnosis results through local analysis, by only communicating a minimal number of measurements among diagnosers. We demonstrate experimentally that our distributed diagnosis scheme is computationally more efficient than its centralized counterpart, and it does not compromise the accuracy of the diagnosis results.

Hydrothermal vent systems are the plumbing systems of the deep ocean, spewing heat and minerals from Earth's interior while supporting unique ecosystems and offering clues about the geological processes that regulate the formation of oceanic crust. Locating and mapping the distribution of hydrothermal plumes near the venting sources assists the geochemists optimize their efforts to study the evolution of dissolved and particulate components of vent emissions by helping them determine the best locations and depths to take water samples. This paper presents an effective hydrothermal plume mapping and search algorithms for using on AUVs to locate the hydrothermal venting source location. AUVs use hydrothermal chemical signature as a guide to navigate and track in the unknown environments. The mapping algorithms are based on Bayesian inference theory. The planning algorithms are based on artificial potential field methods. This methodology results in algorithms for predicting likelihood of vent location versus position. The AUV would then optimize a desired trajectory to navigate in the hydrothermal plume and locate the hydrothermal vent.

Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques may be applied to a variety of real-world problems. At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, CS 455: Artificial Intelligence was offered during the Spring 2008 semester in which students from all disciplines were invited to attend. Robot kits are incorporated into the course as a pedagogical tool to motivate and encourage learning by applying theoretically abstract algorithms to concrete real-world problems. This paper discusses the approach to incorporating robotics in the AI classroom. A set of commercial off-the-shelf robot kits are discussed and analyzed with respect to the students' work during the semester. Finally, recommendations for improvements on teaching AI to a multi-disciplinary audience with the help of robot kits will be discussed.
