The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's Department of computer Science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The titles of the nine symposia were Agents That Learn from Human Teachers, Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems, Experimental Design for Real- World systems, Human Behavior Modeling, Intelligent Event Processing, Intelligent Narrative Technologies II, Learning by Reading and Learning to Read, Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0, and Technosocial Predictive Analytics. The goal of the Agents That Learn from Human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The Human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain. The Learning by Reading and Learning to Read symposium explored two aspects of making natural language texts semantically accessible to, and processable by, machines. The Social Semantic

This paper is devoted to the consensus control for a network of autonomous agents with high-dimension linear coupling dynamics and subject to external disturbances. By transforming the consensus control problem into an H infin control problem, we propose a distributed state feedback protocol, and obtain conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to ensure the consensus with a prescribed H infin performance level for networks with zero and nonzero communication delays, respectively. Furthermore, the undetermined feedback matrix of the proposed protocol is also solved. A numerical example is included to validate the theoretical results.

This paper proposes an adaptive multi-class support vector machine for simultaneous microarray classification and gene selection. By evaluating the gene ranking significance, the adaptive multi-class support vector machine is shown to encourage an adaptive grouping effect in the process of building classifiers, thus leading a sparse multi-classifiers with enhanced interpretability. Based on a reasonable correlation between the two regularization parameters, an efficient solution path algorithm is developed for solving the proposed support vector machine. Experiments performed on the leukaemia data set are provided to verify the obtained results.

Bio-signal analysis is one of the most important approaches to biomedical engineering. The health information such as ECG, PCG, EMG and EEG are often recorded in digital format to be analyzed. In this paper, a bio-signal analyzing Web service system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier technique is proposed. The bio-signals are recorded in digital format as the input of the system. In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), the system under Web services .NET is designed. The system provides features including heterogeneous platform, protocols, as well as applications. The system has been designed with the purpose of seamless integration into the Health Information System.

This paper investigates the applicability of Gaussian Processes (GP) classification for recognition of articulated and deformable human motions from image sequences. Using Tensor Subspace Analysis (TSA), space-time human silhouettes (extracted from motion videos) are transformed to low-dimensional multivariate time series, based on which structure-based statistical features are calculated to summarize the motion properties. GP classification is then used to learn and predict motion categories. Experimental results on two real-world state-of-the-art datasets show that the proposed approach is effective, and outperforms Support Vector Machine (SVM). © 2008 IEEE.

In complex and dynamic environments where interdependencies cannot monotonously determine causality, data mining techniques may be employed in order to analyze the problem, extract key features and identify pivotal factors. Typical cases of such complexity and dynamicity are supply chain networks, where a number of involved stakeholders struggle towards their own benefit. These stakeholders may be agents with varying degrees of autonomy and intelligence, in a constant effort to establish beneficiary contracts and maximize own revenue. In this paper, we illustrate the benefits of data mining analysis on a well-established agent supply chain management network. We apply data mining techniques, both at a macro and micro level, analyze the results and discuss them in the context of agent performance improvement. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper provides an analysis of students' choices and rationale with respect to gender and diversity in hiring software professionals. The study population included students at two universities who were asked to hire a software developer and a program manager from a pool of four candidates for a fictitious software company. As part of a written assignment, students provided reasons for choosing and not choosing candidates. To understand the role gender played in selecting candidates, the study included two candidate pools. The first candidate pool included four candidates. The second candidate pool differed from the first in that the descriptions of two of the candidates, represented by opposite genders, were switched. This paper reports on the following questions: 1) Does gender matter in the rate of selection among candidates?, 2) Does gender matter in how the candidates are perceived?, and 3) What statements about gender and diversity did students make? Through analyzing students' work, our study shows that gender plays a role in the rate of selection: the female candidate is more popular. Assumptions about candidates vary with gender. Finally, some students use diversity as a hiring criterion while others openly reject using gender and diversity as criteria in hiring. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Technical advances are enabling a pervasive computational ecosystem that integrates computing infrastructures with embedded sensors and actuators, and are giving rise to a new paradigm for monitoring, understanding, and managing natural and engineered systems - one that is information/data-driven. This research investigates programming systems for sensor-driven applications. It addresses abstractions and runtime mechanisms for integrating sensor systems with computational models for scientific processes, as well as for in- network data processing, e.g., aggregation, adaptive interpolation and assimilation. The current status of this research, as well as initial results are presented.
