Semantic annotation and querying is currently applied on a number of versatile disciplines, providing the added-value of such an approach and, consequently the need for more elaborate - either case-specific or generic - tools. In this context, we have developed Eikonomia: an integrated semantically-aware tool for the description and retrieval of Byzantine artwork Information. Following the needs of the ORMYLIA Art Diagnosis Center for adding semantics to their legacy data, an ontology describing Byzantine artwork based on CIDOC-CRM, along with the interfaces for synchronization to and from the existing RDBMS have been implemented. This ontology has been linked to a reasoning tool, while a dynamic interface for the automated creation of semantic queries in SPARQL was developed. Finally, all the appropriate interfaces were instantiated, in order to allow easy ontology manipulation, query results projection and restrictions creation.

Model-based approaches have proven fruitful in the design and implementation of intelligent systems that provide automated diagnostic functions. A wide variety of models are used in these approaches to represent the particular domain knowledge, including analytic state-based models, input-output transfer function models, fault propagation models, and qualitative and quantitative physics-based models. Diagnostic applications are built around three main steps: observation, comparison, and diagnosis. If the modeling begins in the early stages of system development, engineering models such as fault propagation models can be used for testability analysis to aid definition and evaluation of instrumentation suites for observation of system behavior. Analytical models can be used in the design of monitoring algorithms that process observations to provide information for the second step in the process, comparison of expected behavior of the system to actual measured behavior. In the final diagnostic step, reasoning about the results of the comparison can be performed in a variety of ways, such as dependency matrices, graph propagation, constraint propagation, and state estimation. Realistic empirical evaluation and comparison of these approaches is often hampered by a lack of standard data sets and suitable testbeds. In this paper we describe the Advanced Diagnostics and Prognostics Testbed (ADAPT) at NASA Ames Research Center. The purpose of the testbed is to measure, evaluate, and mature diagnostic and prognostic health management technologies. This paper describes the testbed's hardware, software architecture, and concept of operations. A simulation testbed that accompanies ADAPT, and some of the diagnostic and decision support approaches being investigated are also discussed.

This paper investigates cooperative radio resource management for multiple cognitive radio networks in interference environments. The objective of this research is to manage shared radio resources fairly among multiple non-cooperative cognitive radio networks to optimize the overall performance. We emphasize the underlying predictability of network conditions and promote management solutions tailored to different interference environments. A multi-agent-system-based approach is proposed to achieve information sharing and decision distribution among multiple cognitive radio networks in a distributed manner. We address the distributed constraint optimization problem (DCOP) in cognitive radio networks and study the effectiveness of DCOP algorithms to find the optimal radio resource assignment through communications between distributed agents.

software risk advisory tools have been developed to support Verification and Validation (V&V) processes for NASA flight projects on the Constellation program. The Orthogonal Defect Classification COnstructive QUALity MOdel (ODC COQUALMO) predicts software defects introduced and removed classifying them with ODC defect types, allowing various tradeoff analyses. We have been exploring methods to design and optimize V&V processes with static and dynamic versions of the quality model by integrating it with different risk minimization techniques. These techniques allow "what-if" experimentation to determine the impact of V&V techniques on specific risks and overall flight risk. V&V techniques are quantified from a value-based perspective when the defect model is integrated with machine learning, strategic optimization and JPL's Defect Detection and Prevention (DDP) risk management method. Results to-date show that the automated methods are practical for flight projects to design higher value V&V processes in shorter time and with fewer resources.

Parallel asynchronous iterative algorithms relax synchronization and communication requirements, and can potentially extend Desktop Grids beyond embarrassingly parallel applications to support a broader class of parallel iterative applications. This paper presents the design and implementation of CometG, a decentralized (peer-to-peer) computational infrastructure that extends Desktop Grid environments to support these applications. CometG provides a decentralized and scalable tuple space, efficient communication and coordination support, and application-level abstractions that can be used to implement Desktop Grid applications based on parallel asynchronous iterative algorithms using the master-worker/BOT paradigm. The deployment and evaluations of CometG and a CometG-based application in a wide-area environment using the PlanetLab [7] test bed, as well as a campus network are presented. © Springer Science + Business Media, Inc. 2006.

Classification of data with imbalanced class distribution has posed a significant drawback of the performance attainable by most standard classifier learning algorithms, which assume a relatively balanced class distribution and equal misclassification costs. This learning difficulty attracts a lot of research interests. Most efforts concentrate on bi-class problems. However, bi-class is not the only scenario where the class imbalance problem prevails. Reported solutions for bi-class applications are not applicable to multi-class problems. In this paper, we develop a cost-sensitive boosting algorithm to improve the classification performance of imbalanced data involving multiple classes. One barrier of applying the cost-sensitive boosting algorithm to the imbalanced data is that the cost matrix is often unavailable for a problem domain. To solve this problem, we apply Genetic Algorithm to search the optimum cost setup of each class. Empirical tests show that the proposed cost-sensitive boosting algorithm improves the classification performances of imbalanced data sets significantly. © 2006 IEEE.

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on the Internet have become an immediate problem. As DDoS streams do not have common characteristics, currently available intrusion detection systems (IDS) cannot detect them accurately. As a result, defend DDoS attacks based on current available IDS will dramatically affect legitimate traffic. In this paper, we propose a distributed approach to defend against distributed denial of service attacks by coordinating across the Internet. Unlike traditional IDS, we detect and stop DDoS attacks within the intermediate network. In the proposed approach, DDoS defence systems are deployed in the network to detect DDoS attacks independently. A gossip based communication mechanism is used to exchange information about network attacks between these independent detection nodes to aggregate information about the overall network attacks observed. Using the aggregated information, the individual defence nodes have approximate information about global network attacks and can stop them more effectively and accurately. To provide reliable, rapid and widespread dissemination of attack information, the system is built as a peer to peer overlay network on top of the internet. Embedded digital signal processors for software defined radio have stringent design constraints including high computational bandwidth, low power consumption, and low interrupt latency. Furthermore, due to rapidly evolving communication standards with increasing code complexity, these processors must be compiler-friendly, so that code for them can quickly be developed in a high-level language. In this paper, we present the design of the Sandblaster Processor, a low-power multithreaded digital signal processor for software defined radio. The processor uses a unique combination of token triggered threading, powerful compound instructions, and SIMD vector operations to provide real-time baseband processing capabilities with very low power consumption. We describe the processor's architecture and microarchitecture, along with various techniques for achieving high performance and low power dissipation. We also describe the processor's programming environment and the SB3010 platform, a complete system-on-chip solution for software defined radio. Using a super-computer class vectorizing compiler, the SB3010 achieves real-time performance in software on a variety of communication protocols including 802.11b, GPS, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth, GPRS, and WCDMA. In addition to providing a programmable platform for SDR, the processor also provides efficient support for a wide variety of digital signal processing and multimedia applications. © 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, LLC.

The increasing heterogeneity, dynamism, and uncertainty of emerging DCE (Distributed Computing Environment) systems imply that an application must be able to detect and adapt to changes in its state, its requirements, and the state of the system to meet its desired QoS constraints. As system and application scales increase, ad hoc heuristic-based approaches to application adaptation and self-management quickly become insufficient. This paper builds on the Accord programming system for rule-based self-management, and extends it with model-based control and optimization strategies. This paper also presents the development of a self-managing data streaming service based on online control using Accord. This service is part of a Grid-based fusion simulation workflow consisting of long-running simulations, executing on remote supercomputing sites and generating several terabytes of data, which must then be streamed over a wide-area network for live analysis and visualization. The self-managing data streaming service minimize data streaming overheads on the simulations, adapt to dynamic network bandwidth, and prevent data loss. An evaluation of the service demonstrating its feasibility is presented. ©2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a content-based decentralized information aggregation service for pervasive environments. The service provides a uniform query interface where aggregation queries are specified using content descriptors in the form of keywords, partial keywords, wildcards and ranges. The service guarantees that all data that matches a complex/range query was located and aggregated in an efficient and scalable way. The design of the aggregation service uses a decentralized aggregation trie along with a distributed and decentralized query engine. The deployment and experimental evaluation of the aggregation service are also presented. Evaluations include simulations as well as experiments using deployments on local-area network at Rutgers and wide-area PlanetLab testbed
