Sensor Webs are heterogeneous collections of sensor devices that collect information and interact with the environment. They consist of wireless sensor networks that are ensembles of small, smart, and cheap sensing and computing devices that permeate the environment as well as high-bandwidth rich sensors such as satellite imaging systems, meteorological stations, air quality stations, and security cameras. Emergency response, homeland security, and many other applications have a very real need to interconnect such diverse networks and access information in real-time. While Internet protocols and Web standards provide well-developed mechanisms for accessing this information, linking such mechanisms with resource-constrained sensor networks is very challenging because of the volatility of the communication links. This paper presents a service-oriented programming model for sensor networks which permits discovery and access of Web services. Sensor network applications are realized as graphs of modular and autonomous services with well-defined interfaces that allow them to be described, published, discovered, and invoked over the network providing a convenient way for integrating services from heterogeneous sensor systems. Our approach provides dynamic discovery, composition, and binding of services based on an efficient localized constraint satisfaction algorithm that can be used for developing ambient-aware applications that adapt to changes in the environment. A tracking application that employs many inexpensive sensor nodes, as well as a Web service, is used to illustrate the approach. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of ambient-aware applications that interconnect wireless sensor networks and Web services.

This paper presents a component oriented modeling environment for building hybrid dynamic models of physical system. The modeling environment is created using the generic modeling environment (GME), a meta programmable visual modeling application developed at the Institute for software Integrated systems (ISIS). The core of the modeling language itself is a hybrid extension of the bond graph modeling language. The advantages of an object-oriented approach to physical system modeling combined with the advanced features of GME for managing model complexity are illustrated by building a library of hydraulic system components. A simulation model can be automatically generated from the physical system model using a model translator. As an example application we use the component library to build the model of a coupled multi-tank system with controlled and autonomous hybrid behaviors, and illustrate this with a simulation example

Fault diagnosis of coupled mobile robots requires a large number of measurements to be communicated either between the robots or from the robots to a central diagnoser. As computational complexity increases with the number of measurements, centralized algorithms become inefficient. This paper presents a distributed approach for qualitative fault diagnosis of coupled mobile robots. The approach is based on a bond graph modeling framework which incorporates local and distributed control algorithms, multiple sensor types, and both actuator and sensor faults. Relative measurement orderings are introduced to discriminate faults by exploiting the temporal order of the measurement deviations. This increases the discriminatory power of a set of measurements and results in a more efficient qualitative diagnosis algorithm. Distributed diagnosers are designed and applied to coupled mobile robots. Experimental results for a system consisting of two robots pushing a box demonstrate the improvement in both discriminatory power of the measurements and efficiency of the distributed diagnosis approach

Checkpointing is widely used in robust fault-tolerant applications. We present an efficient incremental checkpointing mechanism. It requires to record only the state changes and not the complete state. After the creation of a checkpoint, state changes are logged incrementally as records in memory, with which an application can spontaneously roll back later. This incrementalism allows us to implement checkpointing with high performance. Only small constant time is required for checkpoint creation and state recording. Rollback requires linear time in the number of recorded state changes, which is bounded by the number of state variables times the number of checkpoints. We implement a Java source transformer that automatically converts an existing application into a behavior-preserving one with checkpointing functionality. This transformation is application-independent and application-transparent. A wide range of applications can benefit from this technique. Currently, it has been used for distributed discrete event simulation using the time warp technique

Context awareness is an inherent feature of pervasive computing. It enhances the proactiveness of the system thus requiring less user attention and fewer human-machine interactions, it supports intelligent personalization features, and it can assist the system to address the user requirements considering the current conditions. Nevertheless, in such environments, various types of context information are involved and need to be efficiently managed and maintained, soundly interpreted, rapidly processed, and securely disseminated by the system. Thus, an interoperable and flexible context representation scheme is necessary that will support efficient context interpretation and reasoning and will perform well in distributed large-scale context-aware systems. This paper is concerned with the development of a hybrid context representation scheme that aims to combine the maintenance, distribution and administrative facilities of a location-based context model and the semantic advantages of context ontologies

Classification of data with imbalanced class distribution has posed a significant drawback of the performance attainable by most standard classifier learning algorithms, which assume a relatively balanced class distribution and equal misclassification costs. This learning difficulty attracts a lot of research interests. Most efforts concentrate on bi-class problems. However, bi-class is not the only scenario where the class imbalance problem prevails. Reported solutions for bi-class applications are not applicable to multi-class problems. In this paper, we develop a cost-sensitive boosting algorithm to improve the classification performance of imbalanced data involving multiple classes. One barrier of applying the cost-sensitive boosting algorithm to the imbalanced data is that the cost matrix is often unavailable for a problem domain. To solve this problem, we apply Genetic Algorithm to search the optimum cost setup of each class. Empirical tests show that the proposed cost-sensitive boosting algorithm improves the classification performances of imbalanced data sets significantly.

Supply chain management (SCM) environments are often dynamic markets providing a plethora of information, either complete or incomplete. It is, therefore, evident that such environments demand intelligent solutions, which can perceive variations and act in order to achieve maximum revenue. To do so, they must also provide some sophisticated mechanism for exploiting the full potential of the environments they inhabit. Advancing on the way autonomous solutions usually deal with the SCM process, we have built a robust and highly-adaptable mechanism for efficiently dealing with all SCM facets, while at the same time incorporating a module that exploits data mining technology in order to forecast the price of the winning bid in a given order and, thus, adjust its bidding strategy. The paper presents our agent, Mertacor, and focuses on the forecasting mechanism it incorporates, aiming to optimal agent efficiency

This paper assesses and analyzes a harmonic vector modeling method for reducing disturbance torque and motion state estimation error using quantized input measurements of position. There is a finite resolution available for any digital interface and quantization will always be present in some form. Although not possible to completely reconstruct a quantized measured state, it is possible to attenuate deterministic quantization characteristics. The discussed method models quantized position feedback as a spatially rotating vector consisting of fundamental and harmonic components. The error mitigation strategy involves decoupling these spatial quantization harmonics from the actual fundamental position, using heterodyning tracking observer topologies
