Reinforcement learning(RL) has roots in dynamic programming and it is called adaptive/approximate dynamic programming(ADP) within the control community. This paper reviews recent developments in ADP along with RL and its applications to various advanced control fields. First, the background of the development of ADP is described, emphasizing the significance of regulation and tracking control problems. Some effective offline and online algorithms for ADP/adaptive critic control are displayed, where the main results towards discrete-time systems and continuous-time systems are surveyed, ***, the research progress on adaptive critic control based on the event-triggered framework and under uncertain environment is discussed, respectively, where event-based design, robust stabilization, and game design are reviewed. Moreover, the extensions of ADP for addressing control problems under complex environment attract enormous attention. The ADP architecture is revisited under the perspective of data-driven and RL frameworks,showing how they promote ADP formulation ***, several typical control applications with respect to RL and ADP are summarized, particularly in the fields of wastewater treatment processes and power systems, followed by some general prospects for future research. Overall, the comprehensive survey on ADP and RL for advanced control applications has d emonstrated its remarkable potential within the artificial intelligence era. In addition, it also plays a vital role in promoting environmental protection and industrial intelligence.

In this paper,we present a novel adaptive performance control approach for strict-feedback nonparametric systems with unknown time-varying control coefficients,which mainly includes the following ***,by introducing several key transformation functions and selecting the initial value of the time-varying scaling function,the symmetric prescribed performance with global and semi-global properties can be handled uniformly,without the need for control ***,to handle the problem of unknown time-varying control coefficient with an unknown sign,we propose an enhanced Nussbaum function(ENF)bearing some unique properties and characteristics,with which the complex stability analysis based on specific Nussbaum functions as commonly used is no longer ***,by utilizing the core-function information technique,the nonparametric uncertainties in the system are gracefully handled so that no approximator is ***,simulation results verify the effectiveness and benefits of the approach.

With the rapid advancement of deep learning technology, feature extraction backbones that are effectively trained have found increasing use in various traffic perception tasks, such as vehicle recognition and roadway user detection and classification. However, given the naturally imbalanced distribution of objects in the real world, deep learning networks can inadvertently act as bias amplifiers, leading to unfair detection and classification outcomes. Addressing and quantifying this bias in traffic applications has thus become a pressing challenge. In response, this research introduces the first comprehensive traffic imbalance object recognition dataset tailored for autonomous vehicles, called the Autonomous-vehicle Long-tail Image Dataset (ALIDA). This dataset reflects real-world sample distribution and includes four categories—motorized users, non-motorized users, roadway facilities, and traffic signs—spanning 87 classes and totaling 37,558 images. Our experimental results confirm that these backbones may struggle to accurately recognize less common objects with limited training data, such as children and wheelchair users. To mitigate such biases and improve traffic perception equality, we introduce a DEbiased Traffic Object Recognition (DETOR) scheme. This scheme leverages both few-shot and representation learning techniques. Employing DETOR, the residual neural network achieved a 290% increase in accuracy for recognizing minority classes, such as children, motorcyclists, deer, and bears. This not only enhances the effectiveness but also significantly improves the fairness and scalability of traffic perception using deep neural networks.

In electric power transmission and distribution systems, the use of overhead lines instead of underground cables is preferred by power utilities mainly due to the lower construction cost and the easier maintenance access. On the other hand the equipment used in overhead lines is stressed by several factors, such as weather conditions, lightning, vegetation fires, etc. In particular, vegetation fires under the overhead transmission lines could have catastrophic results for the installed equipment and can cause long-lasting electricity interruptions. In this study, condition assessment results are presented for eighteen 150 kV composite insulators exposed to a forest fire event, occurred in the August 2021, in the island of Rhodes, Greece. The evaluation of the fire effects on composite insulators was performed by employing several macroscopic and microscopic diagnostic techniques including visual inspection, hydrophobicity classification, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and optical microscopy analysis. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

This paper elaborates the results of the hardware implementation of a traveling wave (TW) protection device (PD) for DC microgrids. The proposed TWPD is implemented on a commercial digital signal processor (DSP) board. In the developed TWPD, first, the DSP board's Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) is used to sample the input at a 1 MHz sampling rate. The Analog Input card of DSP board measures the pole current at the TWPD location in DC microgrid. Then, a TW detection algorithm is applied on the output of the ADC to detect the fault occurrence instance. Once this instance is detected, multi-resolution analysis (MRA) is performed on a 128-sample data butter that is created around the fault instance. The MRA utilizes discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to extract the high-frequency signatures of measured pole current. To quantity the extracted TW features, the Parseval theorem is used to calculate the Parseval energy of reconstructed wavelet coefficients created by MRA. These Parseval energy values are later used as inputs to a polynomial linear regression tool to estimate the fault location. The performance of the created TWPD is verified using an experimental testbed. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a leak–localization method for fluid pipeline through monitoring bursts in acoustic emission signals. First, the algorithm seeks bursts in individual signals using the Neyman–Pearson signal detection theorem, groups adjacent bursts from two signals captured by two acoustic emission sensors mounted at two pipeline ends and localizes those burst sources through the time difference of arrival technique. Then, a coordinate histogram is constructed from a set of resulting burst source coordinates in a period to indicate a suspicious leaky position on the testing pipeline. The experimental results reveal that the proposed technique can determine single leaks with a mean relative location error of 1.2% while conventional methods return relative errors of greater than 7.5%. Furthermore, the proposed method can properly localize two simultaneous leaks whereas others cannot. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Perception module of Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are increasingly susceptible to be attacked, which exploit vulnerabilities in neural networks through adversarial inputs, thereby compromising the AI safety. Some researches focus on creating covert adversarial samples, but existing global noise techniques are detectable and difficult to deceive the human visual system. This paper introduces a novel adversarial attack method, AdvSwap, which creatively utilizes wavelet-based highfrequency information swapping to generate covert adversarial samples and fool the camera. AdvSwap employs invertible neural network for selective high-frequency information swapping, preserving both forward propagation and data integrity. The scheme effectively removes the original label data and incorporates the guidance image data, producing concealed and robust adversarial samples. Experimental evaluations and comparisons on the GTSRB and nuScenes datasets demonstrate that AdvSwap can make concealed attacks on common traffic targets. The generates adversarial samples are also difficult to perceive by humans and algorithms. Meanwhile, the method has strong attacking robustness and attacking transferability. © 2024 IEEE.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) with Deep Learning (DL) for Tweets Classification includes use of advanced neural network designs to analyse and classify Twitter messages. DL techniques like recurrent neural network (RNN) or transformer-based frameworks like BERT are used to mechanically learn difficult linguistic patterns and contextual info from tweet data. These techniques able to capture subtleties of language with sarcasm, sentiment, and context-specific meanings and making them suitable for tasks like sentiment analysis or topic classification in realm of social media. Leveraging deep symbols learned from great amounts of textual data, these NLP techniques permit precise and nuanced classification of tweets, donating to enhanced information retrieval, sentiment tracking, and trend analysis in dynamic and fast-paced world of social media communication. In this view, this research develops an arithmetic optimization algorithm with deep learning based tweets classification (AOADL-TC) approach for sustainable living. The goal of the AOADL-TC technique is to identify and discriminate different kinds of sentiments that exist in the tweet data. At the initial stage, the AOADL-TC model pre-processes tweet data to convert uniform data into a useful format. For sentiment detection, the AOADL-TC technique applies a parallel bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU) model. At last, tuning of parameters related to parallel BiGRU model performed by AOA. An wide set of tests carried out to illustrate better performance of AOADL-TC model. The experimental outcomes portrayed that AOADL-TC technique demonstrates the supremacy of the AOADL-TC technique in terms of different evaluation metrics. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
