In a multi-terminal high-voltage direct current based on voltage source converter, the proactive hybrid HVDC breaker is an important component in DC grids to isolate a DC fault. From the DC breaker design point, it is crucial to realize a fast fault current breaking. Hybrid HVDC breaker based on delay slope method for breaking signal has more fast action. Especially for overhead lines of DC grid, automatic reclosing control method is adopted in this paper. A wind farm ring topology model, 8-terminal HDC based on voltage source converter, is build on PSCAD/EMTDC simulation platform. Simulations are given to demonstrate effectiveness of the delay slope method and automatic reclosing control strategies. In last, it is pointed out the existing problems in automatic reclosing of Hybrid HVDC breaker.

This paper presents a novel analytical method for electro-mechanical design of a high speed long-term flywheel energy storage system and thermal evaluation of possible operating modes of the system. Flywheel's composite shell rotor along with the motor/generator unit are assumed to be placed into a sealed vacuum chamber, which presents a challenge of heat transfer, produced by rotor losses. Developed method takes into account thermal radiation properties of the rotor and is realised using Mathcad software, which allows for quick investigation of any flywheel configuration. The method involves calculations for preliminary rotor sizing and determining achievable operation modes, while keeping the rotor under a specified temperature limit. Results of using this method for studying dependencies of thermal performance on initial system parameters are presented and conclusions are drawn. Based on the conducted study, recommendations on system design considerations are given.

Very fast transient over-voltage (VFTO), induced by disconnector operations in gas-insulated switchgears, has become the limiting dielectric stress at ultra-high voltage levels. Much work has been done to investigate single-strike waveforms of VFTO. However, little study has been carried out investigating the repeated strike process, which would influence VFTO significantly. In this paper, we carried out 450 effective experiments in an ultra-high voltage test circuit, and conducted calculations through the Monte Carlo simulation method, to investigate the repeated strike process. Firstly, the mechanism of the repeated strike process is proposed, based on the experimental results. Afterwards, statistical breakdown characteristics of disconnectors are obtained and analyzed. Finally, simulations of the repeated strike process are conducted, which indicate that the dielectric strength recovery speed and polarity effect factor have a joint effect on VFTO. This study enhances the understanding of the nature of VFTO, and may help to optimize the disconnector designed to minimize VFTO.

Wayside acoustic monitoring technique is promising for health monitoring of wheel-bearing for railway vehicles. However, due to the high relative moving speed between the railway vehicle and the wayside mounted microphones, the recorded signal is embedded with Doppler Effect. What's more, the background noise is relatively heavy which makes it difficult to extract the diagnosis relevant information. To solve these problems, this paper introduced a railway wheel-bearing wayside acoustic fault diagnosis scheme based on Doppler Effect reduction and Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD). Firstly, an improved Doppler Effect reduction method is introduced incorporating with the kinematic parameters estimation and signal re-sampling method. Secondly, the EEMD is employed to extract the diagnosis relevant Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF). Finally, the envelope spectrum analysis is employed to identify the local fault. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experimental cases analysis.

LQR controller is the most popular technique that provides an optimal control law for linear systems among the state space feedback control strategies. However, the conventional LQR controller synthesis is unfortunately an iterative process due to the trial and error approach involved in determining the parameters values of the weighing matrices Q and R. Here, the Big Bang-Big Crunch (BB-BC) optimization algorithm is used that optimizes a time domain fitness function in the design of the state feedback optimal control law and thus avoiding the repeated adjustment process of LQR parameters. In this study, a special performance fitness function that is inversely proportional to the certain time domain step response criteria of a dynamical system is proposed for the optimization procedure. In order to test the performance of the proposed method, firstly a simulation study is done within the MATLAB to stabilize an inverted pendulum on cart. Then, the proposed controller is used in a real time implementation to stabilize a DC-DC boost converter benchmark in the lab. Both MAT-LAB simulations and laboratory experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
