An automatic train operation (ATO) system generally consists of the generation of recommended speed profile and the speed tracking strategy. It determines the tracked trajectory and the energy consumption of trains during the trip. Therefore, the optimisation of recommended speed profile and the ATO tracking strategy are regarded as two important means to achieve energy-efficient train operation between the successive stations. By considering the ATO tracking strategy, an optimisation method of the recommended speed profile is proposed in this paper. Based on the approximate calculation, a discrete combination optimisation model is formulated and a modified max-min ant system (MMAS) is taken as the core algorithm. With the integration speed tracking strategy, this method achieves the recommended speed profile with optimised energy consumption and a perfect running punctuality along the actual tracked trajectory. The computation time of the algorithm is shorter and the switching time of operation during the cruising phase is reduced by integrating the drivers' experience, which also reduces the energy consumption of train running between stations. The simulation results of a case study based on Beijing Subway verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, which has a good performance on energy-efficient train operation.

Unmanned aerial vehicles, bustling autonomously over the sky above our heads, demand a high level of intellectual ability to avoid possible collision. An early warning radar is proposed for such a purpose. The radar uses a far-reaching signal to detect the existence of another UAV maneuvering in vicinity, and then uses a second near-reaching signal to validate the detection. A safe distance is defined as a threshold below which collision will happen and thus a warning should be triggered. Instead of being measured, the distance between the UAVs is assumed to be random under the rationale that the UAVs are highly maneuverable. With the safe distance given, an arbitrarily high hit-rate of warning and an arbitrarily small false-alarm rate can be achieved by adjusting the strengths of probing signals.

A novel robust sliding-mode controller using neural networks (NNs) is given for trajectory tracking control of permanent magnet spherical actuator (PMSA) with external disturbance and system model errors. The controller is established including sliding-mode scheme and the neural networks. The radial basis function (RBF) neural networks are chosen to approximate the unknown model and uncertainty, as well as to reduce the chattering of sliding-mode controller. The weighting coefficients of the neural networks are trained online. The robust control is employed to overcome the approximation errors from NNs. All the adaptive tuning laws for the NNs are derived from Lyapunov stability theorem. The stability of the closed-loop system, as well as the convergence of the position tracking errors to zero, is guaranteed by the proposed controller. Simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Since most chemical processes exhibit severe nonlinear and time-varying behavior, the control of such processes is challenging. In this paper, we propose data-driven controller design method based on lazy learning for chemical processes. Using a lazy learning algorithm, a local valid linear model denoting the current state of system is automatically exacted for adjusting the PID controller parameters based on input/output data. This scheme can adjust the PID parameters in an online manner even if the system has nonlinear properties. The simulation results on the dynamic model of Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor(CSTR) are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed new control techniques.

In this paper, the problem of rudder-roll damping control for a class of cruise keeping ships subject to both actuator fault and state saturation is investigated. A manoeuvring and rudder control model of marine vessels is firstly reviewed based on the existing literature. Actuator faults which including partial loss of rudder effectiveness and actuator-bias faults are considered in the model. Then a switching control strategy is developed to compensate for the actuator faults and to guarantee the stability of the rudder-roll damping control system. Moreover, some relationship regarding state saturation bounds, actuator fault limits and control parameters are analyzed in this paper. Finally, simulation results are given to illustrate the proposed procedures and their effectiveness.
