Summary form only given. This paper presents commissioning details of a coordinated reactive power-voltage controller (CQVC) installed in a multi-machine steam power plant (SPP). The CQVC regulates reactive power and voltage of a 1992MVA multi-machine SPP. After briefly introducing basic control principles and relevant details about the CQVC's implementation, CQVC parameterization and tuning are thoroughly discussed. Once commissioned the CQVC performance under various operating conditions is assessed. It is shown that the CQVC successfully maintains a HV busbar voltage and allocates reactive power to participating generators in accordance to their capability. Numerous CQVC responses recorded at the site are presented to demonstrate controller's performance under normal and extreme plant and network operating conditions.

This paper deals with the HCC algorithm (Hill Climbing control) to optimize the performance of Magnus wind turbines reducing the response time to reach the maximum power point (MPPT Maximum Power Point Tracking) as well as to reduce fluctuations around that point. The Magnus turbines have cylinders instead of conventional blades and its operation is based on the physical principle known as the Magnus Effect. The Magnus turbines consume power for rotating the cylinders, so the MPPT performs tracking of the net power generated by subtracting the power consumed in the electric motor to drive the cylinders. The simulation results are presented for the proposed Magnus wind turbine system with measurements of mechanical shaft power including the controlled mechanical load torque and DC servo drive (DC servo drive and brushless DC motor). This system was designed to perform optimization studies of a turbine Magnus prototype. In the proposed HCC algorithm, the negative net power band uses a fixed step increment of cylinder rotation and the other parts of the curve use an adaptive step. As the curve slope tends to zero near the maximum point, the step increment decreases, thus minimizing the oscillations around that point.

This paper presents a MPPT for Magnus effect wind system with a DC servo-drive system (DC drive and brushless DC motor) driving the rotating cylinders of the turbine. The optimal rotation of the cylinders to deliver the maximum power extracted from the wind turbine is tracked by a HCC (Hill Climbing control) algorithm acting on the servo drive. The proposed wind system consists of a PMSG (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator), a three-phase diode rectifier, a DC/DC (boost) converter and a resistive load. The boost converter also uses the HCC algorithm (Hill Climbing control) to track maximum power operating point. Therefore, the MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) for a Magnus wind system requires both tracking for optimal cylinders speed and the optimal generator speed.
