This paper summarizes a presentation to be given at the IEEE power and Energy Society 2012 General Meeting, in the panel session “Demand response: analytics, practice, and challenges in smart grid environment”. The paper elaborates participation of demand response (DR) resources in electricity markets. Specially, different types of DR participation in the wholesale energy markets are discussed. Then, two DR program designs are presented which aim to enable customers' participation in day-ahead energy markets. The paper continues with presenting the modified structure of the day-ahead energy market in presence of the DR programs. The offer packages specifically designed for DR participation in the market are introduced, and the market clearing problems including DR programs are presented and discussed. In the last section, the paper outlines different benefits of DR participation in energy markets.

Penetration of wind power in power systems causes power quality problems. Consuming large amount of reactive power and injection of harmonic currents are two main problems. This paper discusses a controller based on a repetitive control for an Energy Capacitor system (ECS) to compensate reactive power demand and harmonic currents. For this purpose power quality indices according to IEC standard are used. The new scheme is simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC in a grid including a wind farm and a nonlinear load. Simulation results clearly show that this control scheme which applied in ECS improves power quality as per IEC standard as well as reduces harmonics of supply current.

This paper presents a new method to enhance transient stability of a power system including wind farm, when a severe disturbance occurs in the power system. For this purpose, the Energy Capacitor system (ECS) is used. ECS can improve transient stability because of its ability on control active and reactive power. A new control scheme based on PI controller and repetitive controller is proposed for transient stability enhancement. Real wind speed data are used in the analyses to obtain realistic responses. Simulation results clearly show that the proposed ECS can enhance the transient stability of wind generators in power system as well as their low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability.

This paper execute trial and error method called Active Learning Method (ALM) in Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) that is accompanied by some problems. The proposed EKF estimator used in sensorless vector control of brushless DC motor (BLDCM). This estimator uses stator voltages and currents to estimates state variables. By this estimator, filtering of current and voltage can be eliminated due to inherent properties of kalman filter. In this scheme, current controllers have been used for control strategy. Simulation results show good performance of presented sensorless scheme for BLDCM.

High penetration of energy resources and energy storage in smart grids has increased capability of reactive power production. The accurate performance of inverters which connect resources to grids can quickly provide the necessary reactive power consumption or injection for voltage correction. Using the communication infrastructure and management created in smart grids, these end-user reactive-power-capable devices can be coordinated for voltage support. Energy management system (EMS) is responsible for network management in smart grids. The assistants, as Distribution management system (DMS), can be used in very widespread grid to make some of the decisions to control different parts of networks. In this paper, a framework for voltage control by EMS and DMS by introducing a new coefficient is presented. This coefficient is calculated in real time for selection a group of buses that is used for reactive power compensation and voltage correction. Finally discussed how resources selected by DMS.

This paper discusses a controller based on a proportional-repetitive control for a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). Repetitive control can achieve zero steady-state error of tracking sinusoidal signal, but it doesn't make a quick response to the disturbance and needs at least one fundamental cycle to function properly. The control system based on proportional-repetitive controller, in stationary frame is proposed to achieve fast dynamic response and zero steady-state error at the same time. This controller can compensate power quality disturbances, such as voltage sag, harmonic voltages, and voltage imbalance, simultaneously. The control scheme is implemented in a test system with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Simulation results show that the output voltage of controller can track the reference signal quickly and accurately and therefore compensate disturbances.

Congestion is a condition in power systems operation in which some transmission lines become fully loaded. This problem intervene considerable amount of extra cost and increase burdens of power market participants. To alleviate congestion, the operator of power system pays participants to modify their active power generation or consumer side demand. This change in operating point would put the power system in the peril and the stability margins would drop because of the increase in participation of critical generators and load demand. Considering security margins as secondary function could maintain power system from instability points by restraining participation of generators and demands. In this paper a multi-objective version of particle swarm optimization is employed to find Pareto solutions of novel secure congestion management in which congestion management cost and Corrected Transient Energy Margin are considered as two competing objective functions. The proposed method has been tested on the New-England power system to validate the efficacy of proposed method.

Health, Margin and Risk states which in recent years are known as well-being reliability indices, provide a comprehensive adequacy assessment of bulk power system reliability studies. Conventional reliability information about power system operation only considered health and risk states which were not often adequate criteria both in system planning and utilization. It seems margin state as the intermediate condition between health and risk must be considered. Well-being method which is a approach to power system generation adequacy evaluation incorporates deterministic criteria in a probabilistic framework and provides system operating information in addition to risk assessment and can be evaluated using analytical techniques. The most important part of this approach is the algorithm for calculating the probability of each state. Besides, all system components, their behavior and their operational conditions such as transmission lines overloads and voltage drops should be considered in the calculations. In this context, this paper proposes a method to calculate more precise well-being indices using Monte Carlo simulation procedure and Fuzzy Logic algorithm while AC load flow is utilized for contingency analysis. The proposed method is then demonstrated on the RBTS to demonstrate the instance results. © 2011 Chamber of Turkish Electric.

A microgrid is a controllable component of the smart grid defined as a part of distribution network capable of supplying its own local load even in the case of disconnection from the upstream network. Microgrids incorporate large amount of renewable and non-renewable distributed generation (DG) that are connected to the system either directly or by power electronics (PE) interface. The diversity of technologies used in DGs and loads, high penetration of DGs, economic operation of DGs, dynamics of low-inertia conventional DGs and PE interfaced inertialess DGs and smart operation by means of enhanced communication infrastructure have raised challenges in widespread utilization of microgrids as basis of smart grids. power quality, protection, economic and secure operation, active management, communication, dynamics and control of microgrids are among the most important issues under research both in academy and industry. Technical concerns over dynamics of microgrids especially in autonomous (island) mode necessitate revision of current paradigms in control of energy systems. This paper addresses current challenges towards controlling microgrids and surveys dynamic modeling, stability and control of microgrids. Future trends in realizing smart grids through aggregation of microgrids and research needs in this path are discussed at the end of this paper. © 2011 IEEE.
