Review of AI & XAI-based breast cancer diagnosis methods using various imaging modalities

Breast cancer is a significant health concern;early detection and treatment are critical to improving patient outcomes. Artificial Intelligence has the potential to assist healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and clinical decision support systems using AI algorithms can help to improve the accuracy and speed of breast cancer detection and diagnosis. By analysing large amounts of data from various imaging modalities, AI algorithms can help identify breast cancer early, increasing the chances of successful treatment. This survey aims to briefly overview the most prevalent breast cancer types, their staging, and the methods and modalities for their diagnosis to address these problems. Our investigation showed that, when compared to ML, DL techniques achieved the highest accuracy, with an approximate 2% improvement in accuracy. This review article mainly focuses on four commonly used imaging modalities: Mammogram, Thermogram, Ultrasound imaging and histopathology images. This survey critically analyzes breast cancer detection approaches and modalities, as well as a cost-to-accuracy comparison. Explainable AI (XAI) techniques and their application for breast cancer diagnosis are critically examined, as well as their advantages and limitations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

QUBO Models for the FIFO Stack-Up Problem and Experimental Evaluation on a Quantum Annealer

Quantum annealing has been applied to combinatorial optimization problems in recent years. In this paper we study the possibility to use quantum annealing for solving the combinatorial FIFO Stack-Up problem, where bins have to be stacked-up from a conveyor belt onto pallets. The problem is NP-hard and can be solved using linear programming approaches. We developed two QUBO (quadratic unconstrained binary optimization) objective functions based on a bin stack-up solution and a pallet stack-up solution for this problem suitable for a quantum annealer. The number of variables was minimized to increase the performance and their dependence on the number of bins and pallets was discussed. The performances of both methods were studied for various small problem sizes on a D-Wave quantum annealer. We found that only tiny instances could be solved and looked at the terms of the QUBO-formulations, which cause the quantum annealer to fail for larger problem sizes. Furthermore we compare the results to the performance of a classic computer using the same QUBO-formulations. © The Author(s) 2024.

In this paper, we consider multi-view video and audio streaming using MPEG-DASH, which enables to transmit video tailored to the network conditions over HTTP communication. This paper uses HTTP/2 instead of HTTP/1.1, which the authors previously used. HTTP/2 manages a series of request-response exchanges called a stream, which is assigned a unique stream ID. We perform a subjective experiment under various network conditions to evaluate application-level QoS and QoE. From the evaluation results, we investigate the effect of the HTTP/2 stream on the video and audio quality of the users in the multi-view video transmission scenario. © 2024 IEEE.

A dandelion algorithm(DA) is a recently developed intelligent optimization algorithm for function optimization problems. Many of its parameters need to be set by experience in DA,which might not be appropriate for all optimization problems. A self-adapting and efficient dandelion algorithm is proposed in this work to lower the number of DA's parameters and simplify DA's structure. Only the normal sowing operator is retained;while the other operators are discarded. An adaptive seeding radius strategy is designed for the core dandelion. The results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance on the standard test functions with less time consumption than its competitive peers. In addition, the proposed algorithm is applied to feature selection for credit card fraud detection(CCFD), and the results indicate that it can obtain higher classification and detection performance than the-state-of-the-art methods.

Pupillometry measures pupil size, and several open-source algorithms are available to analyse pupillometry data. However, only a few studies compared these algorithms’ accuracy and computational resources. This study aims to compare the accuracy of computer vision-based algorithms (Swirski, Starburst, PuRe, ElSe, ExCuSe algorithms) and the machine learning algorithm, DeepLabCut, to the double-blinded human examiners (gold-standard). Training of DeepLabCut with different architectures and a variable number of markers (2-9 markers) was done on an open-source dataset. The duration of training was statistically longer for the ResNet152 model compared to the MobileNet model. The pupil diameters in computer vision-based software such as PuRe, Starburst, and Swirski were statistically different from human measurements. MobileNet 2 and 3 marker models were the closest to the human measurements. In conclusion, this work highlights the efficiency of lower marker models based on MobileNet architecture in DeepLabCut, which consumes fewer computational resources and is more accurate. © 2024 Institute of Information Technology, Warsaw University of Life sciences - SGGW. Furthermore, the paper describes the usage of area computing for IoT programs, which include video surveillance, domestic automation, and smart town solutions. This study introduces a novel 2-dimensional (2D) spectral/temporal code, termed 2D-cyclic shift (2D-CS) code, optimized for non-coherent Spectral Amplitude Coding Optical Code Division Multiple Access (SAC-OCDMA) systems. Computational results demonstrate that the 2D-CS code has fostered the SAC-OCDMA system's performance whence spectral efficiency (SE), phase induced intensity noise (PIIN), and cardinality. Specifically, the 2D-CS code can increase cardinality by up to 117%, 89%, and 61% compared to one-dimensional CS (1D-CS), 2D-multi service (2D-MS), and 2D-diluted perfect difference (2D-DPD) codes, respectively. The system's performance was evaluated using Optisystem software, showing significant improvements in quality factor (QF) and bit error rate (BER) with LED and laser light sources for four active users at 115 dBm transmitted power and 20,000 m distance. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper compares video and audio QoE of OFDMA multi-user transmission and reliable groupcast over wireless LAN. We assume video and audio transmission to several terminals simultaneously. As a reliable groupcast method, we employ Unsolicited Retry, a technique of IEEE 802.11aa GroupCast with Retries. We utilize IEEE 802.11ax for OFDMA transmission. We evaluate application-level QoS by computer simulation. We then assess QoE through a subjective experiment with video and audio streams generated by the output timing obtained from the simulation. We notice that each method has a situation to be applied appropriately. © 2024 IEEE.

Covering option discovery has been developed to improve the exploration of reinforcement learning in single-agent scenarios, where only sparse reward signals are available. It aims to connect the most distant states identified through the Fiedler vector of the state transition graph. However, the approach cannot be directly extended to multiagent scenarios, since the joint state space grows exponentially with the number of agents, thus prohibiting efficient option computation. Existing research adopting options in multiagent scenarios still relies on single-agent algorithms and fails to directly discover joint options that can improve the connectivity of the joint state space. In this article, we propose a new algorithm to directly compute multiagent options with collaborative exploratory behaviors while still enjoying the ease of decomposition. Our key idea is to approximate the joint state space as the Kronecker product of individual agents' state spaces, based on which we can directly estimate the Fiedler vector of the joint state space using the Laplacian spectrum of individual agents' transition graphs. This decomposition enables us to efficiently construct multiagent joint options by encouraging agents to connect the subgoal joint states, which are corresponding to the minimum or maximum of the estimated joint Fiedler vector. Evaluation on multiagent collaborative tasks shows that our algorithm can successfully identify multiagent options and significantly outperforms prior works using single-agent options or no options, in terms of both faster exploration and higher cumulative rewards. © 2020 IEEE.

Remote sensing images present classification challenges due to the complexity of their structural and spatial patterns. This research explores a hybrid approach that combines convolutional neural network (CNN) and attention through feature fusion to improve scene classification accuracy in remote sensing images. The proposed architecture utilizes EfficientNet and VGGNet to extract depth features separately. The extracted features are then integrated with Dynamic Selfattention (DSA), which dynamically focuses the model on the most relevant information in the image. DSA allows the model to adaptively assign weights to different parts of the image, thus improving the discriminative ability of the model. Furthermore, a feature fusion technique is applied to combine information from different layers of the CNN and DSA modules. Experiments conducted on the UC Merced dataset showed accuracies of 0.9181 and 0.9167. These results show that the combination of CNN, DSA, and feature fusion is an effective and robust approach for remote sensing image classification. © 2025 IEEE.
