Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods are great tools for solving complex problems with a huge number of alternatives, conflicting criteria and objectives. The main goal of using MCDMs in engineering, especially in the design of micro-grids (MGs), is to find the best solution for a specific complex problem among many possibilities and alternatives, such as selecting the best solar panel from many alternatives considering contradicting criteria. This paper presents a brief overview of the usage of MCDM methods in MGs. It shows, (a) the most used MCDM algorithms for MG design and components’ selection, (b) the main objective functions in modeling MCDM problems, (c) the main criteria (e.g., technical, technological, economic, social, and environmental), and (d) the prons and cons of each MCDM method. In addition, it points out the available MCDM software in the market and categorizes them. © 2025 The Author(s).

The authors investigate the potential of pulsed power technology in recycling of E-waste. Applying the pulsed discharge can separate composite materials into plastic and metal. In this study, pulsed discharge was applied to indium tin oxide (ITO) coated plastic films. We used two electrode types: rod-To-rod electrode and a pair of flat plate electrodes to investigate the effect of electrode structure on the metal removal area in detail. A series of single pulse discharges were applied at various electrode distances. As a result, it was revealed that metal can be removed over a wide range by the pulsed discharge using a pair of flat plate electrodes. When the gap between the electrodes was 30 mm, the removal area by the flat plate electrodes was approximately 3.4 times that by the rod electrodes. Analysis of the current density also revealed that the metal removal area was greatly affected by the current density. © 2024 Eindhoven University of Technology.

Parallel-wiring cables are often used in multi-phase AC aircraft electrical Power systems(EPSs).However,it complicates the ac resistance *** solve this issue,an analytical resistance calculation method for parallel-wiring cables in multi-phase EPS was ***,the existing calculation formula of proximity factor was optimized,and the calculation error was reduced from 16%to 2%when two conductors are close to each ***,the superposition effect on current density distribution between multi-conductors was considered based on orthogonal decomposition method,and the position of the equivalent charged points were easily ***,the ac resistance calculation formula was derived according to characteristics of parallel-wiring strategy,and the general ac resistance calculation methods of multi-phase parallel-wiring cables were *** proposed approach considerably enhances the applicability of ac resistance analytical calculation method for multi-conductor *** to the accuracy of the proposed method,it can be used in many cases to avoid case-by-case simulation work and facilitate efficient system design and analysis.

In this study, we aimed to develop LED lighting with an emission spectrum effective for microalgae propagation, and fabricated LED lighting with Phosphor layer RGB, which has peaks in the red, green, and blue wavelength bands, and Phosphor layer RG'B', which has broader peaks in the red, green, and blue wavelength bands. In order to examine the effect of microalgae propagation, Closterium ehrenbergii samples prepared at different dilution rates were irradiated with LED illumination light of Phosphor layer RG'B' and Phosphor layer RGB, respectively, for 7 days, and their propagation rates were compared. The results of the experiment showed that Phosphor layer RG'B' produced a higher propagation rate than Phosphor layer RGB. © 2024 IEEE.

Active power control of the photovoltaic(PV)power generation system is a promising solution to regulate frequency fluctuation in a power system with high penetration of renewable *** paper proposes an autonomous active power control of a small-scale PV system for supporting the inertial response of synchronous generators and power-frequency *** the proposed control approach,an effective grid frequency regulation scheme is realized using slow-and fast-frequency responses.A low-pass filter based frequency measurement is used for slow-frequency response,while direct frequency measurement is used for fast-frequency *** designed dual droop characteristic-based control is shaped to achieve a smooth transition between slow-and fast-frequency *** performance of the proposed control approach is demonstrated for serious disturbance scenarios,i.e.,considerable power-load imbalance and generation *** the powerload imbalance test scenario,the proposed control approach works properly within the normal frequency deviation region even when the frequency deviation exceeds that region *** the generation trip test,the frequency deviation is mitigated quickly,and the employed droop control is smoothly transferred from the slow-to fast-frequency responses.

The need for autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is rapidly increasing for various industrial applications today. However, the realization of UAV autonomy requires a careful mix of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer vision (CV) techniques to be implemented to address end-user challenges and satisfy field requirements. This study aims to develop an intelligent system for UAV to achieve autonomy with standard low-cost hardware components. We have infused state-of-the-art AI and CV technologies into our developed system architecture to improve autonomous navigational capabilities of UAVs. The proposed architecture has been implemented and tested on the DJI Tello UAV equipped only with a monocular camera on-board and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). We focused on solving multiple practical technical problems that have arisen during this study due to the hardware limitations of the UAV. The study investigated methods for representing obstacles within an environmental map, which are crucial for effective avoidance and path planning, such as their edges, width, and shape, to ensure accurate detection and navigation. The experiments were carried out in an environment that included dynamic obstacles that were not considered in the map. The experimental results showed outstanding performance in terms of successful autonomous navigation for a wide range of light intensity. These results show that the proposed approach has a high potential to achieve autonomous UAV operation in the field with low hardware and energy requirements. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are efficient tools for pattern recognition applications. They have found applications in wireless communication systems such as modulation classification from constellation diagrams. Unfortunately, noisy channels may render the constellation points deformed and scattered, which makes the classification a difficult task. This paper presents an efficient modulation classification algorithm based on CNNs. Constellation diagrams are generated for each modulation type and used for training and testing of the CNNs. The proposed work depends on the application of Radon Transform (RT) to generate more representative patterns for the constellation diagrams to be used for training and testing. The RT has a good ability to represent discrete points in the spatial domain as curved lines. Several pre-trained networks including AlexNet, VGG-16, and VGG-19 are used as classifiers for modulation type from the spatial-domain constellation diagrams or their RTs. Several simulation experiments are presented in this paper to compare different scenarios for modulation classification at different Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) and fading channel conditions. © 2022, The Author(s).

Modern active distribution networks possess significant potential to deliver ancillary services to transmission networks owing to the rising integration of renewable energy sources. This study explores the provision of primary frequency support from active distribution network to transmission network via price-based transactive control of microgrid inverters. The proposed method aims to achieve efficient coordination among microgrids, optimizing their utility, while also assisting the active distribution network in optimal primary frequency support provision to transmission network. The feasibility of this approach for real-time application is validated using a real-time simulator. © 2024 IEEE.

Li-Fi is another term for Visible light communication (VLC) which operates by transmitting data through free space by using either Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) or Laser Diodes (LDs). The technique finds substantial applications in scientific research as well as military applications when used underwater. VLC technology helps eliminate radio interference alongside providing replacement solutions for traditional underwater communication systems. The research develops and models a visible light wireless communication system through ambient light testing with two 550 nm and 450 nm LD light sources and Pin photodetector over 10 meters using Opti System software. The system uses Non-Return-to-Zero On-Off Keying (NRZ OOK) also known as Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) modulation through Mach-Zehnder Modulator with WDM technology in NLOS environment. A 10 Gbps data transmission occurs through the clear ocean environment along a 10-meter channel with 0.0405 1/m absorption and 0.0025 1/m scattering. The 550 nm transmitted source emits its maximum Quality factor as 8.35 when BER analyzers operate under ambient light conditions and produce its minimum BER as 4.89e-11 under the same conditions. Examining similar ambient light influences reveals the BER analyzers demonstrate a maximum Quality factor of 8.62 and minimum BER of 18.11e-12 when operating under 450 nm transmitted light. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2025.

This paper addresses the problem of input-to-state stability (ISS) and stabilization of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) coupled with a system of homogeneous linear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) through the boundaries. First, a Lyapunov result characterizing the ISS property for finite-dimensional systems is extended to deal with coupled ODE and PDE systems. The proposed ISS condition is then applied to derive stability and stabilization conditions in terms of linear matrix inequality constraints assuming magnitude bounded disturbances at the boundaries. Two convex optimization problems are also proposed in order to obtain either an optimized reachable set estimate or a boundary controller that minimizes the disturbance effects on the L2 × R-norm of the system states. Numerical examples illustrate the potential of the proposed approach. © 2024 IEEE.
