This paper provides an overview of microgrid control strategies, examining differences between centralized and decentralized approaches, and focusing on classical hierarchical control schemes as well as the structure of three-layer microgrid control systems. It also explores Hardware-in-the-Loop modeling, a crucial approach for microgrid simulation, with particular emphasis on devices supporting microgrid modeling. The paper primarily focuses on the design and implementation requirements of an experimental setup for real-time testing of microgrid control algorithms. The setup incorporates Hardware-in-the-Loop device, a power amplifier, a power converter, a battery energy storage system, and a digital controller. It is specifically designed to handle both power and information (control) signals, facilitating a comprehensive approach to evaluating and validating microgrid control strategies in real-world conditions. We demonstrate a transparent in-line optical power monitor using an InP-based phototransistor monolithically integrated with an InP/Si hybrid MOS optical phase shifter. The trapmediated photodetection and amplification by phototransistor enables photodetection down to-44 dBm with an optical insertion loss of >0.25 dB. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

Stability and Robustness Analysis of Finite-Time Consensus Algorithm for Second-Order Multiagent systems Under Sampled-Data Control

The consensus problem for second-order multiagent systems based on nonsmooth sampled-data control is considered. First, a continuous-time nonsmooth consensus protocol is proposed, which can realize the consensus of systems in a finite time when the external disturbance is absent. Next, based on the sampled data and the zero-order holder, a new discrete-time nonsmooth protocol is proposed. Considering external disturbances, the explicit relationship between the ultimate boundary of errors of any two agents and the sampling period and external disturbance is given with the Lyapunov method and graph theory, which theoretically shows that the nonsmooth control algorithm has a stronger ability to resist external disturbance than the smooth control algorithm. Finally, a simulation example shows the superiority of the nonsmooth consensus algorithm over a smooth consensus algorithm. © 2013 IEEE.

Engineered cyberphysical systems are growing increasingly large and complex. These systems require scalable controllers that robustly satisfy state and input constraints in the presence of additive noise: such controllers should also be accompanied by theoretical guarantees on feasibility and stability. In our companion paper, we introduced distributed and localized model predictive control (DLMPC) for large-scale linear systems;DLMPC is a scalable closed-loop MPC scheme in which subsystems need only exchange local information in order to synthesize and implement local controllers. In this article, we provide recursive feasibility and asymptotic stability guarantees for DLMPC. We leverage the system level synthesis framework to express the maximal positive robust invariant set for the closed-loop system and its corresponding Lyapunov function in terms of the closed-loop system responses. We use the invariant set as the terminal set for DLMPC, and show that this guarantees feasibility with minimal conservatism. We use the Lyapunov function as the terminal cost, and show that this guarantees stability. We provide fully distributed and localized algorithms to compute the terminal set offline, and also provide necessary additions to the online DLMPC algorithm to accommodate coupled terminal constraint and cost. In all algorithms, only local information exchange is necessary, and computational complexity is independent of the global system size: we demonstrate this analytically and experimentally. This is the first distributed MPC approach that provides minimally conservative yet fully distributed guarantees for recursive feasibility and asymptotic stability in the nominal and robust settings. © 2014 IEEE.

Autoencoders are a popular model in many branches of machine learning and lossy data compression. However, their fundamental limits, the performance of gradient methods and the features learnt during optimization remain poorly understood, even in the two-layer setting. In fact, earlier work has considered either linear autoencoders or specific training regimes (leading to vanishing or diverging compression rates). Our paper addresses this gap by focusing on non-linear two-layer autoencoders trained in the challenging proportional regime in which the input dimension scales linearly with the size of the representation. Our results characterize the minimizers of the population risk, and show that such minimizers are achieved by gradient methods;their structure is also unveiled, thus leading to a concise description of the features obtained via training. For the special case of a sign activation function, our analysis establishes the fundamental limits for the lossy compression of Gaussian sources via (shallow) autoencoders. Finally, while the results are proved for Gaussian data, numerical simulations on standard datasets display the universality of the theoretical predictions. © 2023 Proceedings of Machine Learning Research. - Renewable resources are adopted nowadays to promote sustainable development, enhance energy security, and build resilient communities. The increase in demand for renewable resources has led to the use of photovoltaic systems. These systems must be efficiently monitored for fault and maintained properly for maximum productivity. Faults like cracks, dust, bird droppings and shadows may arise in the solar panel over a period, reducing the overall performance of photovoltaic systems. These faults can significantly reduce the lifespan of the solar panel. In this paper, voltage, current and surface temperature are measured using sensors from the photovoltaic panel. Real-time data from the solar cell via sensors are collected under no-fault, dust-induced, and partial shading-induced fault conditions. A fault detection methodology for photovoltaic (PV) systems is proposed using a combination of real-time power prediction and classification algorithms. Linear regression is employed to predict the fault. The fault is then classified using a random forest algorithm. ©2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a new approach for change point detection in multivariate Hawkes processes using Fréchet statistic of a network. The method splits the point process into overlapping windows, estimates kernel matrices in each window, and reconstructs the signed Laplacians by treating the kernel matrices as the adjacency matrices of the causal network. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through experiments on both simulated and cryptocurrency datasets. Our results show that our method is capable of accurately detecting and characterizing changes in the causal structure of multivariate Hawkes processes, and may have potential applications in fields such as finance and neuroscience. The proposed method is an extension of previous work on Fréchet statistics in point process settings and represents an important contribution to the field of change point detection in multivariate point processes. © 2024 IEEE.

Smart grids are at risk of cyber-attacks due to more connected devices being introduced. Different kinds of attacks may incur different consequences in the operation of smart grids. Attackers have identified different vulnerable points in smart grid operations and have developed malicious stealthy attacks to disrupt the operation of physical systems. In this paper we have formulated the power system cyber security problem as a five-dimensional optimization problem. A general framework is developed using the system of system explorer tool providing a defensive solution to the vulnerable points of a smart grid prone to malicious attacks. An optimal meta-architecture composed of defensive system constituents is achieved using Genetic algorithm (GA) and fuzzy inference system providing a solution to ensure cybersecurity of power system operations. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, a frequency-tunable patch antenna printed on a dielectric-magnetic composite substrate is presented. The antenna substrate is constructed using duriod dielectric with ferrite slabs embedded into the substrate. Split-ring resonators (SRR) are integrated into the magnetized ferrite slabs to achieve frequency-reconfigurable properties. The constructive coupling between the resonances of the magnetized ferrites and SRR is optimized to achieve a better tuning range by minimizing the required external magnetic field needed to magnetize the ferrite. The frequency tuning range of the proposed frequency reconfigurable antenna is improved, and a 670 MHz range has been achieved. The antenna exhibits a very good gain of 7.1 dB and an efficiency of 77%, and the experimental results corroborate the simulation results. © 2023 IEEE.
