In this paper, we propose a new three-dimensional formation scheme for a leader-follower unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system, where the follower maintains formation by converging to a set of positions relative to the leader rather than a single point. Particularly, the follower maintains a fixed distance from the leader and constrains its bearing angle (which is the angle between its velocity vector and its line-of-sight (LOS) with respect to the leader) within some predefined intervals. This allows the follower to converge to a larger set, thereby enabling time-varying formation geometry and different orientations between the leader and the follower. This provides the follower flexibility to maneuver independently of the leader while maintaining formation. We model leader-follower UAVs as non-holonomic agents where their linear and angular speeds are chosen as control inputs to design closed-loop guidance laws under formation constraints. The proposed flexible-geometry formation scheme allows the follower to anticipate the leader’s movement and emulates the pilot’s behavior as in real air combat, tight formation, etc. The designed guidance laws are robust to the leader’s maneuver changes since the follower UAV’s control law does not need information on the leader’s angular speed control and only uses relative measurements. This makes the design lucrative even when global measurements are unavailable or if the leader UAV is non-cooperative. Finally, we present simulations for various target maneuvers to highlight the merits of the proposed flexible formation control laws. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Breast cancer is a global health problem. Mexican statistics show that 28.2% of new cancer cases in women come from the breast, so efforts must be made to control the burden of the disease. Early detection is an essential part of the social programs aimed at female populations at potential risk, and mammography machines are the technology used to perform screening methods. The possible coverage of a region is mainly affected by the available technological resources. This paper presents a proposal model to determine the number of mammography machines required to meet the State’s requirements of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas, as those in which there are municipalities with the highest social backwardness. The socioeconomic and demographic determinants, as well as the screening mammography demand data, were extracted from official Mexican agencies. The model variables were selected from the categories of target population, epidemiological indicators and infrastructure. Under the author’s heuristic assumptions, the analytic hierarchy process produced the weight that led to selecting the final set of variables. The resource allocation principles were used to adapt the Resource Allocation Working Party (RAWP) focus formula from population to equipment to calculate the State Weighted Machines using the mentioned category adjustments. Model results with 2017 and 2020 data showed that, on average, 50% more mammography machines are needed to cover around 46% of the female population 50–64 years old in the studied States. Further study and analysis of the determinants of access to the service and the equipment proposals are necessary. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper adopts Arimoto's α -Mutual Information as a tunable privacy measure, in a privacy-preserving data release setting that aims to prevent disclosing private data to adversaries. By fine-tuning the privacy metric, we demonstrate that our approach yields superior models that effectively thwart attackers across various performance dimensions. We formulate a general distortion-based mechanism that manipulates the original data to offer privacy protection. The distortion metrics are determined according to the data structure of a specific experiment. We confront the problem expressed in the formulation by employing a general adversarial deep learning framework that consists of a releaser and an adversary, trained with opposite goals. This study conducts empirical experiments on images and time-series data to verify the functionality of α -Mutual Information. We evaluate the privacy-utility trade-off of customized models and compare them to mutual information as the baseline measure. Finally, we analyze the consequence of an attacker's access to side information about private data and witness that adapting the privacy measure results in a more refined model than the state-of-the-art in terms of resiliency against side information. © 2023 IEEE.

The planar transformers can be integrated into the isolated DC-DC converters with high manufacturability. To ensure safe operation over the medium voltage isolated DC-DC converters lifetime, the insulation performance of the planar transformer must meet the insulation demand. Designing a planar transformer with an insulation voltage of 25kV is still quite demanding. This paper analyzes the common weaknesses of the high voltage planar transformer. Several solutions are proposed to address these weaknesses. The insulation test and Finite Element Analysis prove the effectiveness of these enhancements. To improve the creepage insulation of the insulation PCB, several effective solutions are proposed. To deal with the high electric field near the insulation PCB and the connector, a PCB-made field grading structure is designed to control the field. The Equivalent Electrode Method is used to optimize the parameter. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a simple implementation of three versions (large, medium, and small) of terrain multi-classification models using Fully Convolutional Neural Networks (FCNNs) for imagery data. The proposed methodology involves labeled and unlabeled data collection from European Space Agency (ESA) WorldCover and Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) on the Google Earth Engine, compressing datasets into Tensorflow records format with 9 diverse terrain types, and handling Google Cloud training computations. There were prepared different dataset portions of 10 megabytes, 200 megabytes, and around a gigabyte files. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CNN-based approach, achieving a tolerable 71% accuracy of the Terrain Classification Model (TCM) and robust classification performance. The simplicity and efficiency of the proposed method make it suitable for real-world applications requiring reliable and fast terrain classification. © 2023 IEEE.

Selective picking and post-harvest sorting of coffee berries is a labour intensive exercise. If applied correctly, it can lead to higher prices and increased returns for farmers. The increased memory and processing capacity of embedded and mobile devices, coupled with the development of lightweight neural networks has created the possibility of the application of CNNs in the automation of these processes. Such a development would require development of a specialised CNN object detector, which would in turn require image data for training and testing. This work develops a database of 5000 RGB images of coffee berries in six classes. The database has been applied to train and test the CNN GoogLeNet and the Lightweight CNN ShuffleNet. The trained networks achieved more than 94% mean precision in classification of the test set in both cases. The training time for the lightweight ShuffleNet was about one third of the training time for Go ogLeNet. The time taken for the classification was not observed to be significantly different between the two networks. ShuffleNet was found to have 2.7% lower precision and recall than GoogLeNet. © 2023 IEEE.

To assist learning Dart programming on Flutter cross-platform development framework, we have developed the Flutter programming Learning Assistant System (FPLAS). FPLAS integrates a Docker-based Flutter environment with Visual Studio Code, and offers three introductory exercise projects where a teacher needs to manually check the source codes from students by running them and verifying the output user-interfaces (UIs) one by one. In this paper, we implement a UI checking function to automatically check all the output UIs by comparing their image files with the given correct one using Flask framework and OpenCV libraries. For this function, currently, we request students to additionally submit the captured UI image files, which will be automated in future works. For evaluations, we applied the proposal to 141 UI image files for the projects from 32 students in Okayama University, Japan, and confirmed the validity and effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

Simulations of dynamic performances of a series-connected wind farm output, consisting of a number of wind turbine/generators (PMSGs) and current-source thyristor converters, are investigated. Simultaneous simulation of the entire wind farm is hard to execute due to excessive computing load and memory consumption. For this reason, this study proposes a simplified model in which the PMSG and thyristor rectifier portions are expressed simply. First, simulation results from this model are compared with results from that of detailed simulation to show the usefulness of this model. Finally, simultaneous simulations for the entire wind farm are executed to investigate the effect of integrating a large number of wind power outputs on smoothing output fluctuations in the wind farm. © 2024 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.
