Segmentation is an important procedure in the character recognition framework which separates one character from the others. Jawi characters as a variance of Arabic characters are written cursively. Segmentation of characters that are written cursively is the most challenging task because both printed and handwritten Jawi characters are written cursively. In this paper, we propose a new approach of Jawi sub-word segmentation. Histogram projection was used to separate sub-words in the segmentation process. Neighbor tracing was also applied to resolve overlapping characters. Generally, space between a word is longer than for sub-word. By using this technique, segmentation from line to word was not necessarily needed. The result of this technique showed that line to sub-word segmentation was performed with high accuracy for printed Jawi characters. This approach could reduce one step in the word segmentation process. The proposed method achieved an average accuracy of 95.13%. © 2016 IEEE.

Augmented Reality is a technology that allows users to see the real world, with virtual objects placed on it or combined with the real world. Augmented Reality itself can be applied to various things, including as an educational media. In the field of education, technology can be used a culture introduction to society. One part of Indonesian culture is traditional houses. Traditional house is a building that symbolizes the culture of the local community. In North Sumatra itself, there are several traditional houses that have different forms. The use of Vuforia SDK in the construction of this application can display augmented objects in the form of 3-dimentional objects and also provide information on the house. This application will run on the Android mobile platform to make it easier for users to access it. In addition, users can choose their own objects to be used as markers to make the application use much easier.

PPFIA3 encodes the protein-tyrosine phosphatase, receptor-type, F-polypeptide-interacting-protein-alpha-3 (PPFIA3), which is a member of the LAR-protein-tyrosine phosphatase-interacting-protein (liprin) family involved in synapse formation and function, synaptic vesicle transport, and presynaptic active zone assembly. The protein structure and function are evolutionarily well conserved, but human diseases related to PPFIA3 dysfunction are not yet reported in OMIM. Here, we report 20 individuals with rare PPFIA3 variants (19 heterozygous and 1 compound heterozygous) presenting with developmental delay, intellectual disability, hypotonia, dysmorphisms, microcephaly or macrocephaly, autistic features, and epilepsy with reduced penetrance. Seventeen unique PPFIA3 variants were detected in 18 families. To determine the pathogenicity of PPFIA3 variants in vivo, we generated transgenic fruit flies producing either human wild-type (WT) PPFIA3 or five missense variants using GAL4-UAS targeted gene expression systems. In the fly overexpression assays, we found that the PPFIA3 variants in the region encoding the N-terminal coiled-coil domain exhibited stronger phenotypes compared to those affecting the C-terminal region. In the loss-of-function fly assay, we show that the homozygous loss of fly Liprin-α leads to embryonic lethality. This lethality is partially rescued by the expression of human PPFIA3 WT, suggesting human PPFIA3 function is partially conserved in the fly. However, two of the tested variants failed to rescue the lethality at the larval stage and one variant failed to rescue lethality at the adult stage. Altogether, the human and fruit fly data reveal that the rare PPFIA3 variants are dominant-negative loss-of-function alleles that perturb multiple developmental processes and synapse formation.

This paper explains the generic function of implanted devices in humans to guarantee communication between patients and medical monitoring centers for emergency cases, analyzing transmission parameters, such as transfer rate, bandwidth used, data addressing, and technology comparison. The proposed architecture consists in bidirectional conveying between a web-based platform and medical external device through an Ultra-Wide Band local network. It presents an IoT architecture with its logical layers, building an infrastructure for different scenarios for patient mobility.

Cryptography is the science and art of maintaining the security of messages when messages are sent from one place to another. One of the ways securing the form of text message information is by the encryption process using the Vigenere Cipher algorithm and utilizing the One Time Pad (OTP) algorithm as a key generator, where the message will be random when it is opened. The message encryption process used the vigenere cipher algorithm while OTP is used to secure the key with the same formula. After this research has been done, an application was designed to secure text messages by converting the text message into a random message so that the message was unreadable due to a secret message that could not be known by others. The results achieved can secure an encrypted message that cannot be reopened and if those messages were reopened, they must be decrypted.

Outdoor testing of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules must be carried out at different climates as PV power plants nowadays are installed and continues to be installed in many countries. Present study is outdoor testing results and analyses of 5 thin film modules in Ankara, Turkey. The analyses are carried out using monthly efficiencies of the modules that are derived using the energy yield and input. The average efficiencies of the CIS, CIGS and μc-Si/a-Si thin film modules are. We present the monthly and average efficiencies and discuss their variations with the parameter: input, ambient temperature and relative humidity. We also carried out seasonal analyses using Pearson's correlation coefficient and find out that the efficiencies are differently dependent on the above mentioned parameters. This arose a new open question on differentiation of the strength of the effect of each parameter on the monthly efficiencies. © 2017 IEEE.

With the tremendous increase in the photovoltaic (PV) power plants world-wide remarkable decreases in their installation prices per watt are attained mainly due to economic scale effect. This brings questioning to increase their energy yields by considering any possible way like fabricating bifacial solar modules. Present study is on the performance analysis of a bifacial PV module using one-year outdoor testing results in Ankara-Turkey. The module performed very well and reached a specific yield value of 1750 kWh/kWp. This value for Central Anatolia region is well above the values predicted (and suggested) by the local authorities. The efficiency and performance ratio variation with respect to ambient and module temperature are obtained. The calculated dependence of efficiency on the module temperature is found to be η=-0.073Tmod+18.05, and the maximum measured module temperature is about 70 °C. The results show that the bifacial modules have the potential to replace the mono facial modules that are now dominating the PV market. © 2017 IEEE.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) promises information theoretic secure key as long as the device performs as assumed in the theoretical model. One of the assumptions is an absence of information leakage about individual photon detection outcomes of the receiver unit. Here we investigate the information leakage from a QKD receiver due to photon emission caused by detection events in single-photon detectors (backflash). We test commercial silicon avalanche photodiodes and a photomultiplier tube, and find that the former emit backflashes. We study the spectral, timing and polarization characteristics of these backflash photons. We experimentally demonstrate on a free-space QKD receiver that an eavesdropper can distinguish which detector has clicked inside it, and thus acquire secret information. In this paper we consider a networked system of natural-resource consumption, where the agents are governed by a recently reported model of consumer psychology Dynamics of the consumption for each agent are influenced by the state of the resource and consumption of her neighbors. The process is parameterized by the psychological characteristics of each agent. This study extends the original model to incorporate the underlying network topology and explores the effects of aggregation via densely-connected communities present in the network. The exercise yields new interpretations of the predictions made by the original model in context of the influence network. We present aggregation mechanisms first for certain canonical structures of the consuming population and later on for a class of non-canonically structured populations. In the end we present an approximate aggregation scheme for populations where only some inaccurate information of the consumer characteristics is available. © 2017
