Utilization of waste as biogas substrateby dominan microbes identified

Indonesia as the tropics have a source of biomass feedstock which is very large, so the waste biomass can be used optimally as an energy source in the form of biogas. This study was conducted to obtain alternative energy from domestic waste materials, given the limited availability of petroleum and natural gas sourced from fossil fuels. This methodology is an experimental method, the process conditions at room temperature 25-27 °C, pH adjusted to the growth of microbes to produce biogas, retention time 20-60 days, the bioreactor is operated with a batch system, the volume of waste in the bioreactor is made permanent, so that the production of biogas in large scale will increase the pressure inside the bioreactor. Biogas is formed accommodated then distributed to the stove. Factors that determine the formation of biogas is a microbial species capable methanogens convert acetate into biogas. From the results of microbial identification of the isolates in the bioreactor, has identified three types of bacteria methanogens namely Methanospirillum hungatei, Methanobacterium polustre and Methanolacinapoynteri. The results of this study, domestic waste can be utilized as a substrate in biogas production, with the highest methane composition reaches 50.79%. This result is expected to increase public knowledge to utilize the waste into biogas as a renewable energy to sufficient the energy needs of household, so it does not depend on the energy derived from fossil fuels.

This paper presents a solution for different activities concerning shrimp farming, especially focused on the middle-class artisanal productive sector, using both open source hardware and open source software. The proposal aims to optimize monitoring during shrimp farming, measuring parameters, such as dissolved oxygen, water temperature and food levels inside reservoirs, in order to have a real-time reading of parameters. In case critical values appear, an alarm activates by control center, notifying by either electronic mail or web interface. The attractiveness of the proposal consists in the automation of the feeding system, which provides food supply to shrimps at certain daily periods, controlling by web interface the different options the breeder has available, a process that can be even managed remotely.

In this paper, we present our ongoing effort and progress in developing digital signal processing (DSP) laboratory coursework based on an embedded microcontroller (MCU)-based development platform. In particular, the MCU platform adopted for the DSP course uses the same ARM Cortex-M4 platform used in our embedded systems courses at Western Washington University. The goals of this work are twofold. One, by reducing student time spent on learning new development hardware and software, additional concepts can be introduced in the lab and enhanced learning outcomes can be added to the DSP course. Two, by introducing DSP implementation in embedded MCUs, student success in completing DSP-based capstone projects that meet realistic design constraints will be improved. Learning outcomes and assessment measures are introduced to determine the success of the work. If shown to be successful, this work may be adapted to the EE curricula in other institutions and may be adopted in other curricular areas such as controls and communications. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

To predict the final result of an athlete in a marathon run thoroughly is the eternal desire of each trainer. Usually, the achieved result is weaker than the predicted one due to the objective (e.g., environmental conditions) as well as subjective factors (e.g., athlete's malaise). Therefore, making up for the deficit between predicted and achieved results is the main ingredient of the analysis performed by trainers after the competition. In the analysis, they search for parts of a marathon course where the athlete lost time. This paper proposes an automatic making up for the deficit by using a Differential Evolution algorithm. In this case study, the results that were obtained by a wearable sports-watch by an athlete in a real marathon are analyzed. The first experiments with Differential Evolution show the possibility of using this method in the future. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Fishes in genus Sardinella are small pelagic species, which plays an important role in marine ecosystem as the first consumer. Those species are also commercially important, whose total catch reaches 278,600 tons in 2011 in Indonesia, but their identification has been difficult for their morphological similarity. In this study, we reported Sardinella jussieu for the first time in Indonesian coastal area (Banten Bay, Indonesia, 6° 0' 50.00" S-106° 10' 21.00" E). We were able to confirm the species by both its morphological characteristics including the black spot at dorsal fin origin, the dusky pigmentation at caudal fin, 31 total scute numbers, and DNA sequence identity in the GenBank database by the molecular analysis. Its total mitochondrial genome was determined by the combination of next-generation sequencing and typical PCR strategy. The total mitochondrial genome of Sardinella jussieu (16,695 bp) encoded 13 proteins, 2 ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and the putative control region. All protein-coding genes started with ATG and typical stop codon and ended with TAA or TAG except for ND4 in which AGA is used. Phylogenetic analyses of both COI region and full mitochondrial genome showed that S. jussieu is most closely related to Sardinella albella and Sardinella gibbosa. © 2017 The Author(s).

Some disabilities caused by sensory malfunction, accident, or congenital disorder could cause people difficulty in grasping the computer mouse. A well-known substitute uses an inertial sensor to monitor the body’s orientation. This paper evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of different methods of holding the sensor. There are two modes of holding the sensor, the grasping mode and the attached mode; we also evaluate a mouse as a baseline. The attached mode works by placing the sensor on the back of user’s hand. The quantitative and qualitative evaluation procedure is based on ISO/TS 9241 part 411: Ergonomics of human-system interaction standard. The test consists of four levels of difficulty and indicates that the throughput and task completion times were not statistically different between grasping and attached mode. We also found that grasping mode and attached mode did not show significantly statistical differences in comfort and fatigue based on the questionnaires. The results also suggest that the orientation of the hand used in grasping and attached modes is suitable only for lower-impact computer use.

Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

ALICE is a large experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Located 52 meters underground, its detectors are suitable to measure muons produced by cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere. In this paper, the studies of the cosmic muons registered by ALICE during Run 2 (2015–2018) are described. The analysis is limited to multimuon events defined as events with more than four detected muons (N_µ > 4) and in the zenith angle range 0^◦ < θ < 50^◦. The results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations using three of the main hadronic interaction models describing the air shower development in the atmosphere: QGSJET-II-04, EPOS-LHC, and SIBYLL 2.3d. The interval of the primary cosmic-ray energy involved in the measured muon multiplicity distribution is about 4×10¹⁵ < E_prim < 6×10¹⁶ eV. In this interval none of the three models is able to describe precisely the trend of the composition of cosmic rays as the energy increases. However, QGSJET-II-04 is found to be the only model capable of reproducing reasonably well the muon multiplicity distribution, assuming a heavy composition of the primary cosmic rays over the whole energy range, while SIBYLL 2.3d and EPOS-LHC underpredict the number of muons in a large interval of multiplicity by more than 20% and 30%, respectively. The rate of high muon multiplicity events (N_µ > 100) obtained with QGSJET-II-04 and SIBYLL 2.3d is compatible with the data, while EPOS-LHC produces a significantly lower rate (55% of the measured rate). For both QGSJET-II-04 and SIBYLL 2.3d, the rate is close to the data when the composition is assumed to be dominated by heavy elements, an outcome compatible with the average energy E_prim ∼ 10¹⁷ eV of these events. This result places significant constraints on more exotic production mechanisms. © 2025 The Author(s).

The scoreboard is designed and made for a universal use that can be used in matches in some sports such as basketball, futsal, ping pong, badminton, and others. The scoreboard is designed and made based on the needs of several sports in the Student Activity Unit at HKBP Nommensen University which can be easily moved. Scores displayed on the scoreboard is not only the result of the game but also displayed time in the countdown. This scoreboard can be operated by using a cable and can also without using a cable by using a mobile phone through communication using bluetooth. This scoreboard is based on a microcontroller and uses backup power through rechargeable batteries that can be automatically charged. In trials in several games, this tool works well with a few drawbacks in case of a match that takes more than 100 minutes because the time display can only display a maximum time of 99 minutes.
