Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of lung cancer in Asian never-smoking women have previously identified six susceptibility loci associated with lung cancer risk. To further discover new susceptibility loci, we imputed data from four GWAS of Asian non-smoking female lung cancer (6877 cases and 6277 controls) using the 1000 Genomes Project (Phase 1 Release 3) data as the reference and genotyped additional samples (5878 cases and 7046 controls) for possible replication. In our meta-analysis, three new loci achieved genome-wide significance, marked by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs7741164 at 6p21.1 (per-allele odds ratio (OR) = 1.17; P = 5.8 × 10(-13)), rs72658409 at 9p21.3 (per-allele OR = 0.77; P = 1.41 × 10(-10)) and rs11610143 at 12q13.13 (per-allele OR = 0.89; P = 4.96 × 10(-9)). These findings identified new genetic susceptibility alleles for lung cancer in never-smoking women in Asia and merit follow-up to understand their biological underpinnings.

Optical switches are widely used in telecommunication industry due to their many desirable characteristics. In this paper, robust fault detection and fault-tolerant-control (FTC) system for an uncertain nonlinear MEMS optical switch are presented. The design strategy is based on the second order sliding mode approach. A robust second order nonlinear sliding mode observer capable of filtering unwanted high frequencies due to unmodeled dynamics is used to generate quantities called the the residuals. The residuals are then used for the purpose of fault detection and alarm generation. Once an alarm is registered, a fault tolerant control strategy is employed. Two different fault-tolerant control strategies for the unhealthy system are considered. The first strategy is based on conventional sliding mode, while the second is based on a second order sliding mode theory. Robustness and convergence of the proposed schemes are proved using the second method of Lyapunov and the super-twisting algorithm. A comparative study is then performed to demonstrate the superior capability of second order sliding mode control strategy in fault accommodation. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for detection of faults, and subsequent control of the MEMS optical switch is illustrated through simulation studies. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Landfill (TPA) Sukawinatan Palembang is an open dumping system which covers an area of 25 hectares. This system may bring an environmental damage to the surrounding area because it does not provide leachate treatment. Leachate is the landfill waste that dissolves many compounds that contain pollutants from both organic substances and heavy metal origin. This paper presents the results of laboratory analysis on samples of leachate as well as shallow groundwater from the surrounding area. The results were compared to established quality standards to evaluate whether the leachate has influenced the quality of the shallow groundwater in the surrounding area. The results show that there are some indications that the quality of groundwater has been polluted by the leachate of both organic substances and heavy metals produced by the Sukawinatan landfill.

The patellofemoral joint prosthesis has been a topic of interest comparing to total knee joint replacements. In recent years, there have been more interests in the development of unicompartmental prostheses which is in line with minimally-invasive surgery used in modern days. Therefore, this research presents an in-vitro pilot study in the area of patellofemoral stability characteristics of unicompartmental prosthesis comparing to normal knees. The findings from this research show promising results which will give rise to more researches and interests in developing better unicompartmental knee prosthesis.

This paper presents an application of evolutionary fuzzy classifier design to a road accident data analysis. A fuzzy classifier evolved by the genetic programming was used to learn the labeling of data in a real world road accident data set. The symbolic classifier was inspected in order to select important features and the relations among them. Selected features provide a feedback for traffic management authorities that can exploit the knowledge to improve road safety and mitigate the severity of traffic accidents. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, a frequency domain fractionally-spaced conjugate gradient minimum output energy (FDFS-CG-MOE) algorithm is proposed as a new detection technique for MC-CDMA systems. The proposed technique exploits the oversampled received signals in the frequency domain before detection with the CG-MOE algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed technique has better performance to cope with the effect resulting from frequency offset, multipath channel and near-far problem caused by powerful interfering users than the conventional CG-MOE and MOE algorithms.

This paper discusses the use of a hybrid system in the field of Computational Intelligence in order to refine the measurement dataset used for determination of the parameters for static load models in Electric Power Systems (EPS). The objective is reducing the effects of natural fluctuation observed in measurement dataset resulting from random loading aggregation and disaggregation on the system under study. Specifically, it is used a fuzzy logic system for processing the filtering of measurement data obtained in the field. It is also important to note that the used approach makes the adjustment of the membership functions of a fuzzy linguistic variables using a meta heuristic called differential evolution. As a result, it is possible to get parameters both for ZIP and Exponential models with mean errors lower than those obtained with raw measurement dataset. The validation of this proposal uses measures that have been made at a CEMIG utility substation in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper introduces the first fully digital implementation of 1-D, 2-D and 3-D multiscroll chaos using the sawtooth nonlinearity in a 3rd order ODE with the Euler approximation. Systems indicate chaotic behaviour through phase space boundedness and positive Lyapunov exponent. Low-significance bits form a PRNG and pass all tests in the NIST SP. 800-22 suite without post-processing. Real-time control of the number of scrolls allows distinct output streams with 2-D and 3-D multiscroll chaos enabling greater controllability. The proposed PRNGs are experimentally verified on a Xilinx Virtex 4 FPGA with logic utilization less than 1.25%, throughput up to 5.25 Gbits/s and up to 512 distinct output streams with low cross-correlation.

A low-voltage low-power complex channel select filter for low-IF transceiver employing unbuffered single-stage opamp is described. The opamp imperfections have been compensated with a simple technique that is suitable for low-voltage low-power applications. A 1-MHz center frequency fifth-order Chebyshev complex filter has been designed in a standard 0.18-μm CMOS process with 1 MHz bandwidth and 0.5-dB equiripple passband response for Bluetooth application. Simulation results show that it consumes only about 1 mW and achieves out-of-band third-order input intercept point (IIP3) of 37.5 dBV p at 1-V single supply.

In this work, the DC measurements and AC measurements (impedance spectra) have been used to characteristic the Si-module solar cell 6×6 (36 cells), 3.8 V and 85 mA. From the I-V characteristics under dark conditions for different temperatures (300 - 350 K) and by using the ARREHENIUS diagrams defined by Ln(I)=f(1/T) v=const, we have obtained the barrier height ψ(eV), ideal factor A, and the reverse saturation current Io(μA) eV, 2.83 and 0.831 The AC measurement impedance [X(ω)=f(R(ω))] has been employed to measure the parameters of the Si- module solar cell such as: heterogeneity factor, β, DC resistance Rdc, the bulk resistance Rb, activation energy E (eV), donor density Nd (cm-3), and density states Ns (cm-2). The solar cell module was exposed to thermal stress within the range (300 - 350° K), the diagram of complex impedance in the dark, was obtained. This plot gives arcs of a semicircle, their centers lie below the real axis R(ω),corresponding to the appearance of the depression angle (θ≠0), which represents,β(β=2θπ) which is in good agreement with the Cole-Cole diagram. It is noted that,, increases with temperature. The intersection of the circle arcs from the right with x axis (i.e. at very low frequency) gives Rdc the intersection from the left gives Rb, of the sample (2.77KΩ)(i.e. at very high frequency). By using ARREHENIUS diagrams defined by Ln(f)=f(1/T), we have obtained the parameters E (eV), Nd (cm-3), and Ns (cm-2), which equal to 0.354 eV, 1.38×1013 cm-3 and 6.93×109 cm-2 respectively.
