With an ever-increasing population of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients worldwide, a noninvasive treatment for AD is needed. In this paper, the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulus (rTMS) as a treatment for patients with probable AD is compared to the application of rTMS as a treatment for depression. Comorbidity of depression and dementia is discussed, as well as possible links between the two diseases. The possible confounding antidepressant effects of rTMS on cognitive improvements in AD patients are discussed.

He helped create MIT's renowned INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN COURSE. Flowers also received national recognition in his role as host for the PBS television series Scientific American Frontiers from 1990 to 1993 and received a New England EMMY Award for a special PBS program on design. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering and has received three honorary doctorates. He is a MacVicar Faculty Fellow for extraordinary contributions to undergraduate education at MIT where he is a member of the faculty advisory committee for MITX the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange. He was also the inaugural recipient of the Woodie Flowers Award from FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). He recently received the Edward F. Church Medal and the Spira Outstanding Design Educator Award from ASME. Currently Flowers is a director or scientific advisor for four companies. He is also national advisor and chairman of the executive advisor board for FIRST. Has been managing director of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University (also known as the d.school) since 2010. Previously she worked in the innovation practice of Monitor Group in the US and India and advised multinational companies on developing innovation capabilities. Her background includes developing new products and services in a number of emerging markets in Asia and Africa. This paper studies the performance of the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) proposed in [1] in the context of data-aided timing synchronization for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications systems and flat-fading channels. Herein paper, the asymptotic performance of the GLRT test is derived, and an upper bound for the detection probability is provided and shown to behave well as a benchmark for sufficiently large number of observations. Computer simulations are presented to corroborate the developed analytical performance benchmarks. In addition, choice of some system design parameters to improve the synchronization performance is discussed via computer simulations.

This paper studies the application of the non-linear model (ANN, ANFIS). ANN and ANFIS were used to fit a Blood-Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signal with design architecture. A model proposes to define region of interest (ROI) in brain fMRI images. The result shows the ANFIS model can be represent to fit the BOLD data better than ANN. Three paradigms were stimulated at difference issue activation in specific parameter (activation time, duration and signal strength). In this case a higher frequency and amplitude paradigm has stimulated on the brain area activation faster and more frequently.

The number of active users in a cell in the WCDMA system is very limited and influenced by co-channel interference and fading radio channels. Power control is needed to reduce interference by reducing the effects of near-far problem, co-channel interference and fading channels. WCDMA system is required power control that works fast and precisely because radio channels are changing randomly. Fuzzy Genetic Algorithm (FGA) gives the correct solution to the dynamic decision making problem under non-linear conditions, based on simple rules. This paper presents application of adaptive SIR based power control using the FGA on uplink WCDMA system, and compared to fixed step size method using computer simulation. The results confirmed that use of FGA on the SIR-based Power Control for WCDMA systems increases the number of active users while maintaining QoS standards. This is shown by the decline in value of outage probability compared to fixed step methods. Average outage probability at fixed power control step is 0.270036 while the FGA power control is 0.18465.

Early flood alerts system is use to create a tool to measure water level, which powered by solar cell panel. The system is supported by microcontroller and GSM modem to send the measured data via SMS (Short Message Service) into two specific clients' phone numbers that have previously been inputted into the system. Besides the capability to predict the remaining time before the flood, this system can also detect three types of water level: early flood level, flood level and low tide level after the flood with a maximum water level detection of four meters. This system focused on an accurate measurement of the height of the water level and sending a warning message of the threshold height set before to the clients. For each of water level, the system will send three messages for each client number. The setting for client phone numbers and the water level can be programmed by sending the SMS that has been formatted in the system. The early flood alerts system is based on ATMEL AT89S51 microcontroller and the measurement of the water level is processed by ultrasonic HC-SR04. © 2012 IEEE.

Quad-copter is a copter equipped with four motors and propellers, faced to top side, placed vertically and opposite each other propeller. Physically, quad-copter resembles a plus sign form, where each motors placed on edge of the plus sign. The quad-copter design reported in the thesis uses microcontroller STC12C5624AD, electronic speed controllers, brushless DC motors, 3000mAh Lithium-Polymer Battery Packs, propellers, ADXL345 accelerometer module, signal receiver module, and remote controller. Using a 2.4GHz remote controller, the control signal will be received by the receiver module, and then processed by the microcontroller. The accelerometer module acts as balancer of the quad-copter that could reset the quad-copter to its initial position and detects tilt position in 3-axes (x, y, and z axis). After receiving input signal from remote control and accelerometer module, the microcontroller will generate final decision to operate motor stably. Combination of four main motors, accelerometer, and microcontroller produce a cost-effective quad-copter that can fly stably indoor and outdoor. This thesis reports design and construction of the remote-controlled quad-copter. This work, not only applies theories that author have learned, but also could be useful for real life in the future. © 2012 IEEE.

Optical flow approaches calculate vector fields which determine the apparent velocities of objects in timevarying image sequences. They have been analyzed extensively in computer science using both natural and synthetic video sequences. In life sciences, there is an increasing need to extract kinetic information from temporal image sequences which reveals the interplay between form and function of microscopic biological structures. In this work, we test different variational optical flow techniques to quantify the displacements of biological objects in 2D fluorescent image sequences. The accuracy of the vector fields is tested for defined displacements of fluorescent point sources in synthetic image series which mimic protein traffic in neuronal dendrites, and for GABABR1 receptor subunits in dendrites of hippocampal neurons. Our results reveal that optical flow fields predict the movement of fluorescent point sources within an error of 3% for a maximum displacement of 160 nm. Displacement of agglomerated GABABR1 receptor subunits can be predicted correctly for maximum displacements of 640 nm. Based on these results, we introduce a criteria to derive the optimum parameter combinations for the calculation of the optical flow fields in experimental images. From these results, temporal sampling frequencies for image acquisition can be derived to guarantee correct motion estimation for biological objects. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

This paper shows the influence of the load modeling in the behavior of voltage (V), current (I) and impedance (Z) measurements during pre-fault and fault steady states of power distribution systems. The test system is the 24.9 kV IEEE 34 nodes power distribution system, modeled by ATP software, considering load models as constant impedance, constant current, constant power and hybrid load composed using the previous three models. All loads were coded using Models of ATP. As result of the test, a comparative analysis of the signals of V and I measurements and also Z as seen from the power substation is performed. The result shows that the load model affects the fault steady state of the power distribution system, which directly will influence the fault locator performance, since this uses the measurements of V and I at the power substation at pre-fault and fault steady states.

In this paper, the performance evaluation of a smart antenna using D3LS and NCLS algorithms has been presented. The simulations are conducted with the scenario of mobile communication systems. They have confirmed the feasibility of the D3LS and NCLS smart antenna applied to mobile communications. It should be note that the smart antenna employed in this paperis purely blind and single snapshot operation. The simulation results show good performance of the smart antenna.
