An experiment was performed for the observation of H emission induced in a cooled laser-induced atmospheric pressure gas plasma of He atoms in their metastable excited state. The strong H emission detected clearly established, to the exclusion of other well known major excitation processes, the exclusive contribution of the He-induced excitation (HIE) mechanism. The process is suggested to take place by means of energy transfer from the excited He atoms to the H atoms via Penning collision induced ionization involving electron exchange. The result further shows that this mechanism may also work for elements other than H and thereby strongly suggests the use of ambient He gas to broaden and complement the applications of standard laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper we introduce an adaptive fuzzy neural network framework for classification of data stream using a partially supervised learning algorithm. The framework consists of an evolving granular neural network capable of processing nonstationary data streams using a one-pass incremental algorithm. The granular neural network evolves fuzzy hyperboxes and uses nullnorm based neurons to classify data. The learning algorithm performs structural and parametric adaptation whenever environment changes are reflected in input data. It needs no prior statistical knowledge about data and classes. Computational experiments show that the fuzzy granular neural network is robust against different types of concept drift, and is able to handle unlabeled examples efficiently. © 2010 IEEE.

This work develops Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) models applied to predict the consumption forecasting considering climatic factors. It is intended to verify the influence of climatic factors on the electricity consumption forecasting through the ANN. The case study is applied in the Campinas city, Brazil. This work used Perceptron and Backpropagation ANN models. The specific goal is comparisons the performance of neural networks as an alternative to traditional forecasting methods. In this work were observed that despite direct or indirect influence of climatic factors on electricity consumption, a good prediction can be obtained using ANN without climatic factors.

A mini-invasive system ASIC for mulitple bladder pressure measurement function is presented. Not only can the period of measurement be adjusted, the flexibility is also enhanced by using a tunable IA (instrumentation amplifier). Because the pressure inside the body cavity (i.e., bladder) usually does not vary drastically, a long-term mode is required to save the battery power for a reliable observation. Besides, the pressure dynamics in a cavity also could be examined in the continuous mode. The IA amplifies the signal sensed by the pressure sensor, which is then fed into the following ADC (analog-to-digital converter). Owing to the intrinsic 1-atm pressure (one atmospheric pressure) existing inside the body cavity and the various resolution requirement for the different applications, the input range of the IA must be able to be adjusted to keep the required linearity. The pressure range of the proposed system is found out to be 10.4 - 27.7 Psi with the maximum resolution of 8.42×10 -4 Psi, which is more than enough for most of pressure measurement applications. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper compares the mass and the total owning cost (TOC) of three-phase distribution transformer banks against three-phase distribution transformers and the comparison is based on the minimum TOC. This is achieved through a field validated distribution transformer design program that automatically minimizes the objective function (TOC). Transformers compared in this paper are of shell-type, immersed in oil, and all are designed to meet the standard NMX-ANCE-2006-J116 in Mexico. The conclusion of this paper is that from the viewpoint of minimum mass and minimum TOC, in case of small-size transformers (smaller than 45 kVA) it is recommended to use three-phase transformer banks, which is in disagreement with transformer textbooks. This result is due to the fact that more mass is needed for transformer tank, oil and high-voltage conductor for threephase transformer in comparison to three-phase transformer bank.

BACKGROUND: Engaging future engineers is a central topic in everyday conversations on engineering education. Considerable investments have been made to make engineering more engaging, recruit and retain aspiring engineers, and to design an education to prepare future engineers. However, the impact of these efforts has been less than intended. It is imperative that the community reflects on progress and sets a more effective path for the future. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to map a new innovation landscape for what it means to engage future engineers. This is a theoretically grounded divergent-thinking effort to enable a broader space of high impact innovations for engaging future engineers. SCOPE/METHOD: A multiple perspectives methodology drawing from innovation, cross-disciplinary, and boundary work frameworks was used to make visible multiple facets of engaging future engineers. Scholars from diverse communities of thought and discourse were selected to present interparadigmatic perspectives, act as boundary agents, challenge and transform current ways of thinking, and illustrate new opportunities for engineering education innovation. CONCLUSIONS: A new innovation landscape for engaging future engineers is needed, one that emphasizes epistemological development and social justice, new configurations on engineering thinking and connecting to the formative years of development, the entwinement of engineering knowing and being, and mutually informing consequences for opening up a broader space for *** also need to adopt strategies and tools for using a multiple perspectives approach to better understand complex engineering education problems. © 2011 ASEE.

In this paper, we propose an optimal Joint Call Admission Control (JCAC) in next generation wireless networks, where different radio access technologies (RAT) coexist in a co-located way. Moreover, we study the impact of the different RAT's radius coverage area in the system performance and optimal policy structure. The Semi-Markov Decision Process (SMDP) framework is used for modeling of the JCAC proposed and the value iteration algorithm is used to compute the optimal policy. Numerical results show that variation in the proportionality of the radius of RAT coverage area impact on system performance. © 2010 IEEE.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a compact circularly-polarized microstrip array antenna with four square patches fed in phase quadrature such that a phase shift of 90° between each neighbouring patches, thus providing circularly polarized pattern. The feeding network is placed on the opposite side of the patches' ground plane and is designed using three Wilkinson power dividers having different output lengths that achieve the required phase shift between patches. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents novel structure of the ladder-based fully-differential log-companding filter with well-defined operating points. The proposed filter structure is based on the exponential-state-space integrators with compatible input and output voltage levels. Based upon the proposed structure, the derivation of the NPN-only 7rd-order fully-differential log-companding Butterworth low-pass filter is demonstrated. Simulation results of the demonstrated filters are given. ©2010 IEEE.
