In conjunction with a grant from the National Science Foundation, the retention of students in Southern Illinois University - Carbondale (SIUC) College of engineering will be increased through the introduction of innovative academic and non-academic programs. The new academic programs consist of the following components: an introduction to engineering course, engineering designated sections of courses, a summer math course for new students who need improvement in math, and revisions to the math curriculum. The new non-academic programs consist of: creation of an engineering residential college, and peer mentoring, faculty mentoring, and mentoring by practicing engineers. The introduction to engineering course will include all freshman students in SIUC College of engineering. This lecture-laboratory course will provide an interesting description of each engineering major and allows students to work with hands-on projects that will teach the usefulness of mathematics and basic engineering concepts. The SIUC College of engineering has worked with other departments on campus to offer engineering designated sections of core curriculum courses, such as math, sciences, English, and speech communication. The summer math course lasts four-weeks and accepts students who test below the pre-calculus level and prepares them for pre-calculus during the fall semester. The mathematics curriculum is being modified so that all students who do not test into calculus will take a math course taught by the college of engineering that prepares them for calculus. Also, there are non-academic programs that have been designed to improve retention and the freshman experience. First, to foster the "living-learning community" experience, all freshman and sophomore engineering students will live in the engineering residential college with 36 peer mentors and three residential assistants. Knowledge elicitation is difficult for expert systems that are based on probability theory. The elicitation of probabilities for a probabilistic model requires a lot of time and interaction between the knowledge engineer and the expert. Druzdzel and van der Gaag [5] have proposed a theoretical framework that would allow the use of multiple types of probabilistic information for elicitation of Bayesian networks. This framework has been used as a starting point for the implementation of a non-invasive elication method. © 2007 ACM.

In this paper we introduce a new approach to train neurofuzzy networks using the participatory learning concept. The participatory learning paradigm tends to emulate the human learning mechanism where an acceptance mechanism determines which observation is used for learning based upon their compatibility with the current beliefs. The performance of the proposed learning scheme is illustrated by an example involving a nonlinear system modeling problem: the thermal modeling of power transformers. Comparisons with other methods reported in the literature and between two dual network structures are also included. The experimental results show the effectiveness of participatory learning in neurofuzzy networks training.

This article presents a dual-mode (voltage-mode and current-mode) universal biquadratic filter performing completely standard functions: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, band-reject and all-pass functions, based on dual-output second-generation current controlled current conveyor (DO-CCCII). The features of the circuit are that: the bandwidth and pole frequency can be tuned electronically via the input bias currents: the circuit description is very simple, consisting of merely 2 DO-CCCIIs and 2 capacitors: the circuit can provide either the voltage-mode or current-mode filter without changing circuit topology. Additionally, each function response can be selected by suitably selecting input signals with digital method. Without any external resistors, the proposed circuit is very suitable to further develop into an integrated circuit. The PSPICE simulation results are depicted. The given results agree well with the theoretical anticipation. The maximum power consumption is approximately 1.81mW at plusmn1.5V supply voltages.

A novel circuit for realizing floating inductance, floating capacitance, floating frequency dependent negative resistance (FDNR) and grounded to floating admittance converter depending on the passive component selection is proposed in this paper. The proposed simulator employs second-generation current-controlled current conveyors (CCCIIs), differential voltage current conveyor (DVCC) and only grounded passive elements. The synthesized immittance values are temperature-insensitive. The non-ideal current and voltage gains, as well as parasitic impedance effects on the proposed circuit are investigated. Also, simulation results using PSPICE are given for the introduced floating simulator to verify the theory and to exhibit the performances of the topology.

On this preliminary work we employ distributed raman amplifier with pumping schemes are forward- & backward pumping on SMF. The model of simulation and analysis used are multiple-pump interactions on CWDM band. We used four level configuration of pumps on wavelengths; 1435 nm, 1445 nm, 1455 nm and 1465 nm with the range of tuneable power levels are 300 mWatt - 400 mWatt each ones. The average results of Stokes gain measured at L = 0 km and L = 40 km are 17.875 B and -3.5 dB respectively while the noise figure is at the range of 3 dB - 2.5 dB. The maximum length of fiber are reach at L = ~50 km. Two factors found that could decreasing the performances of distributed Raman amplifier are amplified spontaneous scattering (ASS) and Rayleigh backscattering effects. Finally the flattening gains for C band are reached successfully.

His current interests are in communication networks and optimization methods. He coauthored the best-selling book An Introduction to Optimization 2nd Edition Wiley-Interscience 2001. He received the NSF CAREER Award in 1995 and the ASEE Frederick Emmons Terman Award in 1998. He coauthored a paper that was awarded Best Paper in the journal Computer Networks 2003. Professor Chong is a Fellow of the IEEE. Solution techniques for Markov decision problems rely on exact knowledge of the transition rates, which may be difficult or impossible to obtain. In this paper, we consider Markov decision problems with uncertain transition rates represented as compact sets. We first consider the problem of sensitivity analysis where the aim is to quantify the range of uncertainty of the average per-unit-time reward given the range of uncertainty of the transition rates. We then develop solution techniques for the problem of obtaining the max-min optimal policy, which maximizes the worst-case average per-unit-time reward. In each of these problems, we distinguish between systems that can have their transition rates chosen independently and those where the transition rates depend on each other. Our solution techniques are applicable to Markov decision processes with fixed but unknown transition rates and to those with time-varying transition rates.

In this article, a new topology is introduced, which can function as universal biquad filter. It can provide completely standard functions (highpass, lowpass, bandpass, band-reject, allpass), while the quality factor and cutoff frequency can be tuned orthogonally. It comprises 3 voltage to current converters, 1 current follower and 2 grounded capacitors. The current-mode universal filters using CCCIIs and OTAs as examples of active elements, are proposed to show the usefulness of proposed topology. The PSPICE simulation results are depicted, the given results agree well with the theoretical anticipations.

Nuclear power has a troubled past and the future remains uncertain. There are significant uncertainties regarding crucial elements of future large-scale expansion of the use of civilian nuclear power, including nuclear power proliferation, safety, and waste management. Wider uncertainties include nuclear power's potential to help in averting the growing risks of dangerous climate change. The nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 heralded the arrival of nuclear power. No other energy technology has made such as an impact on the human mind as an astounding source of military power and foreign policy strength. This technology currently supplies 22% of electricity in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and 6% in developing countries. The solution to have a positive future for nuclear power technology is to frame decision making in order to best manage the challenges nuclear power presents.
