A genetic algorithm for the optimization of cable routing

In this paper the authors propose a structural method for a genetic algorithm (GA) for the optimization problem of cable routing in which cables have to be laid optimally. When there are no limits on the layout routes, the optimal routes for the individual cables can be found using the Dijkstra method in a finite discrete graph. However, when there are limits on the capacity in the layout routes, optimization cannot be performed using the Dijkstra method. The proposed GA is a two-level hierarchical GA that uses chromosome coding involving two levels. The routes for each cable and the combinations of cable routes are defined respectively, and layout route selection is optimized overall through genetic operations involving these levels. Block crossover and block mutation are used as genetic operations in the first level. In addition, a method to take advantage of lethal genes, which do not satisfy the constraints and are generated in the second level is used. Computer simulations confirm that the two-level hierarchical GA with these genetic operations functions effectively for the optimization problem of cable routing. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper reviews 2 circuits which are floating positive and negative inductance simulators using operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). The simulated inductance values can be controlled electronically by adjusting the bias current of the OTA. Each inductance simulator comprises only 2 OTAs and 1 grounded capacitor without any external resistor and component matching requirements. The circuit performances are depicted through PSPICE simulations, they show good agreement to theoretical anticipation. Some applications as resonant circuit and inductance cancellation circuit are included to confirm the usability of proposed circuits

Delay and computational complexity reduction on the phasor estimates calculated under power system oscillations is the main objective of this paper. Different approximations to the Raised Cosine (RC) filter lead to a reduction in delay and computational complexity of the phasor estimates. As for finite impulse response (FIR) filters, the minimum-phase implementation of the RC linear-phase FIR filter reduces by a half the delay of the phasor estimates, without introducing significant phase distortion and with shorter transients. This improvement in speed provides faster estimates for real-time monitoring and control applications. On the other hand, infinite impulse response (IIR) filters reduce the computational complexity of the estimates by a factor of ten, but without significant delay reduction, introducing a higher distortion, and with longer transient behavior. This solution could be useful for implementations in which computational complexity is a matter of serious concern. In this way, the paper provides a wide range of solutions for those who need more accurate, faster or simpler estimates. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents a design of robust load-frequency stabilizers of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) in coordination with a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC). As large load disturbances with changing frequency in the vicinity of the inter-area oscillations mode occur in an interconnected power system, a system frequency may be heavily perturbed and oscillatory. To stabilize frequency oscillations, a coordinated SMES with SSSC can be applied. On the other hand, variations of system parameters, several load changes etc., cause system uncertainties. To take such uncertainties into account, the multiplicative uncertainty is included in a system modeling. The structure of frequency stabilizer equipped with SMES and SSSC is a second-order lead/lag compensator. Control parameters of frequency stabilizers are automatically tuned by a tabu search. Simulation studies in a two-area interconnected power system confirm the effect of coordinated SMES with SSSC.

Most edge detection algorithms include three main stages: smoothing, differentiation, and labeling. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of algorithms in which competitive learning is applied first to enhance edges, followed by an edge detector to locate the edges. In this way, more detailed and relatively more unbroken edges can be found as compared to the results when an edge detector is applied alone. The algorithms compared are K-Means, SOM and SOGR for clustering, and Canny and GED for edge detection. Perceptionally, best results were obtained with the GED-SOGR algorithm. The SOGR is also considerably simpler and faster than the SOM algorithm.

In this paper, we discuss edge detection by first using a clustering algorithm followed by a known edge detection filter such as Canny or Generalized Edge Detector (GED). We developed a new clustering method called Self-Organizing Global Ranking (SOGR). Comparative results with multispectral satellite images including SOGR, SOM and K-Means clustering methods are discussed. The results show that the two-stage algorithms are better than single stage edge detector algorithms. © 2005 IEEE.

Edge detection is an important topic in image processing and a main tool in pattern recognition and image segmentation. Many edge detection techniques are available in the literature. 'A number of recent edge detectors are multiscale and include three main processing steps: smoothing, differentiation and labeling' (Ziau and Tabbone, 1997). This paper, presents a proposed method which is suitable for edge detection in images. This method is based on the use of the clustering algorithms (Self-Organizing Map (SOM), K-Means) and a gray scale edge detector (Canny, Generalized Edge Detector (GED)). It is shown that using the grayscale edge detectors may miss some parts of the edges which can be found using the proposed method.

The stringent requirements on size and power consumption constrain the conventional hearing aid devices from providing the patients an economic and user friendly solution, specifically for better noise cancellation. With the advancements in technologies such as integrated circuits design, wireless communications and digital signal processing techniques, the wireless hearing aids having multi-microphones, analog, digital and mixed signals and radio frequency signals processing circuits, DSP and programmable units seem to be promising to provide enhanced performance. The focus of this paper is about the system simulation of a typical wireless hearing aid using Agilent Advanced Design System™. The behavioral modeling features are exploited to enable the whole system simulations including electro-acoustic transducers. A few system level simulation results are included. © 2005 IEEE.

The authors have some experience in building virtual worlds for education purposes, in archaeology and for language learning. However, many mainstream world-building applications do not offer quick and appropriate ways of developing interactive and user-driven content that can be easily shared with other users. Many education-orientated applications also require built-in tracking and evaluation mechanisms. Evaluation of virtual worlds and communities is difficult enough as it is. While commercial game engines offer a form of task performance tracking, they typically lack non-violent ways of supporting interaction and collaborative teamwork. The chance to help students and the public to learn by creating and collaborating through the development of contextually relevant worlds is exciting. It is perhaps best served by an application containing a feature set designed specifically for content designers to create learning environments. In this paper we suggest some features that might help educational designers build better 'learning as sharing' experiences.
