Techniques for ground-based soil moisture measurement: a detailed overview

A vital natural ecosystem balance including seed sprouting, plant nutrition and growth, water infiltration, plant transpiration, redistribution, evaporation, and percolation relies on paramount property of soil moisture. Understanding soil moisture measurement and its pattern is crucial for various important fields such as meteorology, hydrology, agriculture, weather, and climate studies. In recent decades, a significant number of experimental methods have been developed to measure the soil moisture. This review paper aims to outline the available common techniques divided in gravimetric, volumetric, and potentiometric either in direct or indirect method for measuring soil moisture;discuss the basic principle for each technique;and compare and evaluate the available technique on the basis of common parameters such as advantages, limitations, and response time. This paper represents a viable resource particularly for the researchers and personnel responsible to manage natural resource and agriculturist to understand and select the suitable method for soil moisture estimation. © 2021, Saudi Society for Geosciences.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) with high surface area and tunable pore size are considered as a promising active material for energy storage, but the low electrical conductivity restricts its performance. Developing ZIF67 derivatives with improved electrical conductivity is necessary to broaden its application in electrochemical fields. In this work, two strategies are applied to improve electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance of ZIF67. Novel structure directing agents of NH4BF4 and NH4HF2 are used to synthesize ZIF67 derivatives with higher theoretical capacitances and favorable layered structures. Self-assembled MXene with different amounts is further incorporated in ZIF67 derivatives to establish composites. The optimal composite electrode shows a high specific capacitance (CF) of 1410.4 F/g (775.6C/g) at 20 mV/s, while the ZIF67 derivative electrode without MXene only shows a CF value of 942.3 F/g (518.3C/g), due to the high surface area and better pore structure as well as the close combination of MXene and the layered ZIF67 derivative for the former case. An energy storage device with the optimal composite and carbon electrodes shows the maximum energy density of 32.40 Wh/kg at 375 W/kg. The Coulombic efficiency of 100% and the CF retention of 77.4% are also achieved after 10,000 cycles. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

The cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Indonesia have increased significantly since 2020. Data shown by the Central Statistics Agency, for example, in South Sumatra Province, there were 6,348 cases of DHF during that period. To suppress the case number of DHF, forecasting areas that are susceptible to this disease is urgently needed. This research aims to develop a machine learning method Support Vector Machine (SVM). The data used include area data, population density data, weather data, and dengue fever case data. The development of the SVM model is carried out using a machine learning method that combines regional data, population density data, weather data, and dengue case data. In the end, using the SVM method can be used to forecast dengue-endemic areas, so that the government and society can take further action to reduce the negative impact of DHF.

Nickel-based compounds are widely applied as the active material for energy storage devices, owing to high theoretical capacity and easy-fabricated process. Bimetallic compounds having multiple redox states can provide abundant redox reactions for charge storage. Structure directing agent (SDA) can promote the preferable growth of active materials and to enhance energy storage abilities. In this work, NH4BF4 and NH4HF2 are firstly used as SDA to synthesize nickel-based compounds along with 2-methylmidozole in the one-step solution process for energy storage applications. The bimetallic compounds are synthesized by incorporating Al, Mn, Co, Cu and Zn salts in the precursor solution including the Ni salt. The system with Al, Cu or Zn possesses single metal compound and barely nickel compound. Mn and Co-incorporated systems present clear bimetallic components with nickel hydroxide. The highest specific capacitance (CF) of 1336.3 F/g (297.0 mAh/g) are achieved at 20 mV/s for the NiCo-based electrode, owing to the bimetallic feature and favorable two-dimensional sheet-like structures. An energy storage device is assembled using the NiCo-based compound and reduced graphene oxide electrodes. The maximum energy density of 10.5 Wh/kg at 0.3 kW/kg, and the CF retention of 78.5% and Coulombic efficiency of 85.2% are achieved after 10,000 times charge/discharge cycles. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Iron oxide (Fe2O3) with a high theoretical capacitance, wide potential ranges and easy availability has attracted much attentions as the electrode material of battery supercapacitor hybrids (BSH). Metal–organic framework (MOF) is one of the promising potential energy storage materials due to its large surface area and controllable pore structures. In this work, novel iron oxide/iron organic framework composites (Fe2O3/FeMOF) are in-situ grown on the Ni foam as efficient energy storage electrodes of BSH. By tuning the solvothermal durations, the morphology changes from random sizes of sheets, regular grown vertical sheets, to flower-like structures. The d-spacing also increases for the Fe2O3/FeMOF synthesized using longer solvothermal durations. The optimal Fe2O3/FeMOF electrode synthesized using 9 h shows a high areal capacitance of 10.97 F/cm2 along with an areal capacity of 5.49 F/cm2 at the current density of 35 mA/cm2, owing to the most regular growth of sheets, the large d-spacing, and the smallest charge-transfer resistances. A BSH composed of the Fe2O3/FeMOF positive electrode and a graphene negative electrode shows a maximum energy density of 0.76 mWh/cm2 at 22.5 mW/cm2. The excellent long-term cycling stability with the capacitance retention of 85% and Coulombic efficiency of 98% are also achieved after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Potential changes in the air pollutant spatial gradient may modify the performance of air quality networks, affecting function fulfillment. This study aims to elucidate, for the first time, whether the air quality networks’ design may be sustained over time. For that, temporal-spatial indicators were assessed in the long term. Particulate matter data (2005–2022) monitored by two target air quality networks (interior southwest European region) were regarded as a case study. The approach was applied to 2005–2022 particulate matter data. Broadly, the implementation of current European legislation (from 2008) has translated into a noticeable decrease in pollution levels. Polluting disparities were observed within the same fixed station category (urban, suburban, and rural). Diverse fixed monitoring stations showed different long-term pollution sceneries, evidencing varied exposure contexts. Distinct spatial patterns (quali- and quantitatively) were observed at global and local levels. Although the annual average PM2.5/PM10 ratio remains stable, suggesting common emission sources, the legislative limit exceedances are not sustained over the study due to fluctuating environmental conditions. Meteorological variables, particularly temperature, consistently impact particulate matter. Variable long-time environmental pollution situations may affect the performance of air quality networks. Based on a solid body of evidence, this work reveals needing to assess the long-time performance of air quality networks to secure the adequate fulfillment of their functions, given that non-redundant stations can become redundant ones and vice versa, thereby serving as a helpful methodology to complement current European air quality directives due to the lack of harmonized methodologies to achieve such an objective. © The Author(s) 2025.

Crop Yield Analysis and Prediction is a fast-expanding discipline that is critical for optimizing agricultural methods. A lack of trustworthy data is one of the challenges in estimating crop yields. We develop predictive models for 22 different fruits and vegetables data. The goals of this study are to create accurate and interpretable crop recommendation models. We used multiple machine learning (ML) models for multi-class crop production prediction to fulfill our research goal. We thoroughly examined the influence of climate and nutrient factors on crop yield, considering their complex interactions. To improve the dataset, augmented data techniques were applied. Configuring the parameters and fine-tuning the hyperparameters is our technique to increase the model performance. Furthermore, we employ explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques and interpretability tools like Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to improve the interpretability of our prediction model. Our findings reveal that the XGBoost model has the best performance model with 99.86% accuracy, followed by SVM Poly Kernel with 99.32% and Random Forest with 98.82%. Feature selection and analysis are emphasized, particularly in regional agricultural contexts. This study contributes to the creation of accurate and interpretable crop recommendation models while also addressing the issue of untrustworthy data, providing useful insights for optimizing agricultural practices.

An accurate predictive model of temperature and humidity plays a vital role in many industrial processes that utilize a closed space such as in agriculture and building management. With the exceptional performance of deep learning on time-series data, developing a predictive temperature and humidity model with deep learning is propitious. In this study, we demonstrated that deep learning models with multivariate time-series data produce remarkable performance for temperature and relative humidity prediction in a closed space. In detail, all deep learning models that we developed in this study achieve almost perfect performance with an R value over 0.99.

This article presents the experimental results of a series of analysis and validation tests carried out on a microinjection system designed to deliver artifitial tears to patients suffering of severe dry eye. The microinjector has the following characteristics: High efficiency and precision, user friendly, portable (8.5 × 4.5 × 2.5 cm) and low manufacturing and assembling costs. The microinjector overcomes many of the shortcomings inherent to the manual method drip, it has a syringe reservoir to keep and deliver the artifitial tears. An electronically driven plunger pushes the solution into a capillary that transfer it to the patient's eyes. The programmed time to deliver the tears fluid is set by the ptient through a "C"program in an Android based device. The real delivering time differs slightly from the programmed one due to frictional effects between the plunger and the syringe walls. The validation tests had the objective to quantify the time difference between the programmed and real delivering times, using as artifitial tears the Lagricel Ofteno brand, whis is the most used in Mexico. Two differentiable tests were done, in one test the plunger was lubricated with silicon oil (Ardes brand) for its compararation with the case where no lubricant is used. All test were done with an operating flow rate range of 0.13-60 L/min). The results show that the microinjection system has the ability to offer high performance and precision with ± 0.191 and ± 0.137 % average error respectively for non-lubricated vs. lubricated tests. The microinjection system can also be used for another compatible biomedical applications like chemotherapy, insulin administration, liquid drug delivery, among others adapting certain injection characteristics (flow rates and time). © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Lighting the way: Enhancing telephone notification with DC lamps in noisy settings

This study aims to develop a device that uses DC lamps as a notification of a telephone ringing in a noisy room. The research method involves observing the Cikande electronic ambassador shop and proposing the use of a DC lamp as a replacement for the speaker output of the telephone. The device includes a PNP transistor type as an amplifier and multiple LEDs to ensure visibility in a noisy environment. The result is a functional device that uses DC lamps to notify the ringing of a telephone in a noisy room. The implication of this research is that it provides a solution for situations where conventional ringing tones from telephones are not audible due to noise pollution. The device can be useful in various settings, including busy offices, factories, and public spaces.
