Interpretability for machine learning models in medical imaging (MLMI) is an important direction of research. However, there is a general sense of murkiness in what interpretability means. Why does the need for interpretability in MLMI arise? What goals does one actually seek to address when interpretability is needed? To answer these questions, we identify a need to formalize the goals and elements of interpretability in MLMI. By reasoning about real-world tasks and goals common in both medical image analysis and its intersection with machine learning, we identify five core elements of interpretability: localization, visual recognizability, physical attribution, model transparency, and actionability. From this, we arrive at a framework for interpretability in MLMI, which serves as a step-by-step guide to approaching interpretability in this context. Overall, this paper formalizes interpretability needs in the context of medical imaging, and our applied perspective clarifies concrete MLMI-specific goals and considerations in order to guide method design and improve real-world usage. Our goal is to provide practical and didactic information for model designers and practitioners, inspire developers of models in the medical imaging field to reason more deeply about what interpretability is achieving, and suggest future directions of interpretability research. © 2023, CC0.

Creating sustainable mining processes to use in space exploration will help obtain affordable, clean energy and innovative means of obtaining materials in situ, eliminating their transportation from Earth. This research focuses on the design of a biomining experiment for the International Space Station through a 1U ICE (International Commercial Experiment) Cube that sustains a metal extraction mission using microfluidic chips. The studied Bacillus species have a fermentative metabolism capable of adapting to perform anaerobic respiration using metals such as iron and manganese as an external electron acceptor, reducing the metal to form soluble ions and releasing CO2 in the process that can be quantified by CO2 sensors in the microfluidic chip, and correlated with the biomining rate produced by the bacteria to indicate its viability. Results show that the designed temperature control system was capable of maintaining the microfluidic chips at a 20 °C temperature difference with respect to room temperature and with high disturbance rejection performance and robustness. The comparative analysis of the CO2 particles transmission probability reaching the outlet for sensor reading for different microfluidic chip channel geometries, indicated that the combined geometry had the most efficient distribution response with more than 60% of the particles reaching the sensor in the first 22.5 seconds after release. Finally, the analysis of the preliminary experiments results carried out with the bacteria showed that Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 does not show capacity to carry out manganese biomining under the study conditions, however a possible process of iron biomining from basalt by this bacterium is observed mainly under anaerobic conditions, although it is also observed in aerobiosis. ARCSnake: Reconfigurable snake-like robot with Archimedean screw propulsion for multi-domain mobility

Exploring and navigating in extreme environments, such as caves, oceans, and planetary bodies, are often too hazardous for humans, and as such, robots are possible surrogates. These robots are met with significant locomotion challenges that require traversing a wide range of surface roughnesses and topologies. Previous locomotion strategies, involving wheels or ambulatory motion, such as snake platforms, have success on specific surfaces but fail in others which could be detrimental in exploration and navigation missions. In this paper, we present a novel approach that combines snake-like robots with an Archimedean screw locomotion mechanism to provide multiple, effective mobility strategies in a large range of environments, including those that are difficult to traverse for wheeled and ambulatory robots. This work develops a robotic system called ARCSnake to demonstrate this locomotion principle and tested it in a variety of different terrains and environments in order to prove its controllable, multi-domain, navigation capabilities. These tests show a wide breadth of scenarios that ARCSnake can handle, hence demonstrating its ability to traverse through extreme terrains. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study aimed to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract, skin and muscles of Sciades herzbergii, detect histopathological changes in the gill and liver, and use these biomarkers for the assessment of potential risks to human health. Fish were sampled during the rainy and dry seasons at two points: Ilha dos Caranguejos (IC) and Porto Grande (PG). Isolation and quantification were carried out using COLItest®. Colonies were subjected to identification and phenotypic investigation of antimicrobial resistance using Vitek®. Gill and liver samples were subjected to routine histological examination. The results indicated the presence of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli, the latter of which showed phenotypic resistance to norfloxacin and gentamicin. Fish caught at PG exhibited more extensive gill and liver damage than fish caught at IC. The findings suggest that histological changes in target organs of S. herzbergii may be influenced by infection with pathogenic bacteria. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Chalcopyrite compounds are promising thermoelectric (TE) materials owing to their excellent performance. Adopting a pseudocubic structure is a key strategy to improve the TE performance as it increases the degeneracy at the valence band edge. Herein, the TE properties of a II-IV-V 2 group, p-type ZnSnAs 2 chalcopyrite with a pseudocubic structure are systematically investigated. Polycrystalline, single phase, stoichiometric ZnSnAs 2 was obtained at growth temperatures above 700 ºC. The TE properties of ZnSnAs 2 depended on its intrinsic defect concentration, which was influenced by its Zn/Sn ratios. A high power factor value of 2890 μW/mK 2 was obtained in Zn-poor Zn 0.9 Sn 1.1 As 2 at 373 K. The TE figure of merit for the off-stoichiometric ZnSnAs 2 reached 0.1 at 573 K. Consequently, a maximum TE conversion efficiency of ∼1 % at a temperature gradient of 300 K was demonstrated for a ZnSnAs 2 -based single-leg device. These results can accelerate the development of TE technologies for low-energy harvesting.

This study delves into the evaluation of the Komodo dragons Adaptive Conservation program (KACP) at Komodo National Park in Indonesia through Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). It aims to understand how the programs components align with community priorities and assess its effectiveness. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this research analyzes community perceptions of KACP's critical elements, spanning eco-tourism initiatives to environmental protection strategies. The community is categorized into local advocates, eco-tourism enthusiasts, and eco-community harmonizers, identifying how each group perceives and interacts with various facets of KACP. The findings reveal significant differences in perceptions of importance and performance among these groups, providing insights into areas of strength and those needing improvement. Additionally, the study includes an analysis of demographic influences on these perceptions through Logit and Probit models, aiming to understand the impacts across different community segments. The results highlight the necessity for an adaptive and responsive design in conservation efforts, considering community expectations and ecological impacts. Despite offering comprehensive insights, the study acknowledges limitations in the demographic scope and suggests future research directions, such as longitudinal studies and an expanded analysis of variables. These findings offer critical guidance for policymakers and conservation practitioners to enhance conservation programs’ effectiveness and community alignment, emphasizing the need to adapt to the challenges and changes introduced by KACP. © 2024 Elsevier GmbH

Making image filters through only the Gaussian function even if the image is blended to reduce interference or disappear, but the result will lack one important feature of the image that is sharpness. This article, therefore, presents a way to spread the image that is based on the Gaussian filter but still possesses sharpness. The method is to check at any location that wants to filter images, and the system will compare with the template of the created image. To decide the mask adjustment from the Gaussian Function in order to be suitable for the data to be filtered When examining and deciding which image edge is from the system, the mask will be applied through the adjustment to match the appropriate edge angle data. And for any position that does not match the image edge, will spread the image as normal, which the results of the proposed method will result in Gaussian image filtering function but still maintaining the edge of the image. © 2019 IEEE.

The rise of imaging in medical field has boost the progress of new imaging method and modality that safer, cheaper, and faster. electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is one of imaging modalities that provides safe medical imaging through non ionizing method. The downside of the EIT method is the complex algorithm needed to produce imaging result and low resolution. This study is aimed to provide a simple EIT imaging system that are easily used and developed. The proposed system designed in this study is a MatlabTM and Arduino based imaging system, which are then tested under several observation object scenario. The imaging results that are produced by the system are able to represent the varying observational objects structure. Impedance measurement method that is implemented in the proposed system is a two-point technique using 8 electrodes and 16 electrodes with a frequency of 50 kHz. The main observation object of this system is an acrylic cup filled with tap water that has a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) of 300 ppm. The proposed EIT imaging system is considered as a simple construction that is able to recognize two different objects according to its different impedance values. © 2019 IEEE.

IntroductionMuscle stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) is a central mechanism with lower limb muscle contraction immediately preceded by muscle stretch for efficient submaximal activities such as gait and powerful maximal activities such as running and jumping [1,2]. Research questionAlthough muscle SSC can be observed at gait and running its higher expression and accessibility is performed on standard maximum vertical jump (MVJ) with an open issue on neuromuscular control assessment of lower limb muscle SSC [3]. MethodsFor this purpose, we present and applied noninvasive subject specific analysis of lower limb muscle coactivation for selected muscles with higher contribution during MVJ impulse based on corresponding conditioned surface electromyographic signals (sEMG). Selected muscles correspond to lower limb muscles vastus medialis (VM), rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), lateral gastrocnemius (LG) and medial gastrocnemius (MG). Twenty-seven trials were assessed corresponding for each subject to the highest MVJ based on larger flight time with long SSC at countermovement jump (CMJ), short SSC at drop jump (DJ) and squat jump (SJ) with no SSC. Trial sample is composed by a group of six young adult volunteers’ students on sports and physical education degree with the ages (21.5 ± 1.4) years, (76.7 ± 9.3) kg mass and (1.79 ± 0.06) m height. Surface skin was prepared and Aqua-Wet gel Skintact F55 electrodes were applied at bipolar configuration as indicated by SENIAN. VM, RF, VL, LG and MG sEMG linear envelopes were paired plotted with the area under the curves computed as well as the coactivation pairs defined as the common area under the curves normalized to the sum of the corresponding pair individual areas under the curves. Coactivations were compared at CMJ, DJ and SJ as well as among CMJ, DJ and SJ, Fig. 1. Linearity assessment between lower limb joint angles and angular accelerations at standard maximum vertical jumps with long-short and no countermovement

IntroductionStandard maximum vertical jump (MVJ) has been applied to assess lower limb long countermovement (CM) on countermovement jump (CMJ) and short CM on drop jump (DJ) for comparison to squat jump (SJ) without CM [1,2]. Research questionNevertheless, the ability for lower limb joint accelerations depending on lower limb joint angles at long, short and no CM remains an open issue [3,4], in particular linearity assessment of these relations at long, short and no CM in association with MVJ whole-body impulsion. MethodsFor this reason, we applied piecewise linear detection of segmented subphases on lower limb joint angles ( θ)-angular acceleration ( α) diagrams for the hip (H), knee (K) and ankle (A) during impulse phases on CMJ, DJ and SJ. Selected sample corresponds to best MVJ trials based on higher flight-time of 3 CMJ, DJ and SJ repetitions for six healthy untrained subjects with ages (21.5±1.4) years, (76.7±9.3)kg mass and (1.79±0.06)m height. Adhesive reflective markers were applied at lower limb and torso, with sagittal hip, knee, and ankle θ, α obtained by inverse kinematics. H,K,A ( θ, α) diagrams were plotted and impulsion subphases segmented at selected instants of ∂ a/∂ q phase reversal with linear fit by the least-squares method, Fig. 1. Fig. 1. ResultsSJ presented larger number of ( θ, α) subphases than DJ, both larger than CMJ with higher |∂ α/∂ θ| variation at DJ and SJ than CMJ, pointing to higher complexity of neuromuscular control and contributing to explain reduced SJ, DJ performance without CM (0.33±0.05)m and with short CM (0.27±0.03)m in relation to CMJ with long CM (0.36±0.04)m for untrained selected subjects, Fig. 1.
