Metallurgical modelling based on the physical laws (white box) purely covers all the theoretical phenomena in the plant, but its development takes too much effort, and moreover the model should be tuned against real data, which are often noisy. On the other hand, a purely data driven modelling (black box) requires less effort and provides a simpler model, but includes a significant bias as the plant history is the only foundation of this kind of model. Since a good process model should be prepared to reproduce any behavior a plant might present, even if it never happened, we thought of a hybrid modelling (grey box) considering the response of theoretical models along with the actual data to find simple process models that can be realized in small smart-devices. However, a lot of processing and exhaustive optimization is required in these tasks, making mandatory the use of parallel computing and in-memory facilities. The result of this work is to develop an approach to model a complex problem like Aluminum Reduction using the physical already known models as data generators to add further data into the existing dataset, which should be used a source for machine learning algorithms. © 2018 Universitatsverlag Potsdam. Aluminium smelting processes are typically complex and multidisciplinary, hard to be modeled and controlled. Recent advances in technology, such as IIoT and the Industrie 4.0 paradigm, have helped this industry to overcome some of these challenges by providing rich information, however good hardware capable of processing a great amount of data are often available on the cloud, whilst most of industries’ plant floor have limited hardware and Internet connectivity. In this sense technologies like in-memory and parallel computing offer an increased performance for processing huge amounts of data, thereby helping in process modeling and subsequent early detection of irregularities. Plant floor systems would be provided with the result of such processing from the cloud in order to ensure good production. This report show the results of this approach in the modelling of bath chemistry process variables, whereby we simulate some situations to check how accurate the forecasts are in the n-step ahead predictions. © 2018 Universitatsverlag Potsdam. Continuous monitoring of vital signals provides relevant information about a patient health status, which is essential in situations of risk. There is a need for practical and efficient systems to obtain these parameters and the RFID technology is presented here as a solution. In this work, a passive RFID tag is developed for respiratory rate monitoring. The RFID tag is a wireless solution for the subject and provides comfort due to its flexibility. Simulations and measurements were performed. To carry out the simulations, it was necessary to characterize the dielectric materials. The principle of operation of the technology in this application is based on the variations of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) caused by the respiratory movements. As a result of the measurements performed with the tag placed on the abdomen of a person, during which forced inhalations and slow expirations were made, these variations of the RSSI could be noticed and, based on the respiratory cycles detected, it was possible to estimate the respiratory rate. © 2018 IEEE.

With the growing diffusion of the Internet of Things concept and the advances in low-power electronics, the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has gained attention in various fields, from entertainment to medicine, for example. Its sensing and signal processing capability allows us to highlight this technology as one of the main solutions in reducing cost and complexity in such applications. This work presents the design and test of a flexible RFID tag operating in the American UHF frequency of 915 MHz, for human body motion detection. Through the analysis of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) variation with time and its Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) it was possible to ensure the tag's applicability. © 2018 IEEE.

Prober is a functional and performance analysis tool for parallel programs, developed during an undergraduate research project. In this paper we show the new expanded version of Prober, in which some features from different software tools are aggregated. It can be used as a single tool to aid the developer in the performance analysis of parallel programs. Our main goal is to provide a new version of Prober, with additional features. Among them we can highlight: the interpretation of user scripts, a user-level support library the generation of speedup and efficiency graphics, batch execution and a new user interface. In order to show, verify and analyze the use of the new version of Prober, we did performance tests in a parallel image convolution program. We added performance measuring routines to collect performance data within different internal code segments;built a set of scripts to specify the performance tests;ran the set of scripts in batch mode;used Prober to generate graphics and statistics based on the collected performance data;and analyzed the results rising Prober as an aid tool.

In this paper, a wearable sensor for ultra-low power networks that interact with a smart home system is proposed. The device is capable to detect falls which can aid the monitoring of elderly peoples to enhance safety. Falls may lead to injuries that could be fatal or mean extra medical expenses. In this study, the development of a wearable sensor for ultra-low power networks capable to interact with a smart home system is proposed. The physiological monitoring is obtained through a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, which is attached to the user's chest, performing real-time detection of falls based on threshold algorithm. The wearable sensor is an EnOcean node that includes a wireless connection with a smart home system and automatically sends alarm telegrams in case of falls. © 2016

In this paper, it is presented a new modified structure of antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA). The structure is fed by a triple ridged substrate integrated waveguide (RSIW) on a single layer low-cost FR4 substrate. The ridges insertion allows a bandwidth enhancement due to the cut-off frequency decrease and consequently the miniaturization. The new structure is compared to an AVA fed by a classical SIW designed for a cut-off frequency around 4 GHz. Numerical simulations were performed and a bandwidth enhancement of 660 MHz was achieved with a gain of 2.06-7.59dBi within the frequency range. © 2021 EurAAP.

This paper presents the concept of a new platform used to simulate surgical procedures in health field. Jchai3D is a tool which allows easy developing of virtual reality applications. Using this framework is possible to build simulations systems which can be used as educational/training tools. Jchai3D is totally open-source and it is available online for download. In addition, Jchai3D is multiplatform, and it can be executed in several environments like Windows, Linux or Mac OS. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents the development of aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHZ to 64 GHz), with square and circular shapes, for on-chip application. The aperture-coupled antenna proposed is composed by a transmission feed line, an aperture and patch element built in aluminum with 10 micrometers of thickness lying on two layers of silicon with height of 200 micrometers. Dimensions of the square and circular antennas were calculated according to the effective wavelength for resonance frequency at 60 GHz in order to match at 50 Ohms. The proposed antennas have been simulated using the commercial software ANSYS. Both antennas show omnidirectional radiation pattern, with half power beamwidth greater than 149 degrees. Square patch presented a more compact structure, with dimension less than 1.55 mm, return loss of-55 dB, and bandwidth of 3.98 GHz, however the circular antenna, with a greater metallic area, achieved a better gain of 5.88 dBi. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper presents Koch fractal aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHz to 64 GHz), for on-chip application. This work is the continuation of the development of aperture-coupled antennas with aperture and patch element built in 2 μm-thick aluminum lying on two layers of silicon with a height of 200 μm. The use of Koch fractal allowed the development of aperture-coupled antennas of greater perimeter with more metal in the patch elements, which promoted an increase in the gain. The observed gain for Koch fractal level 2 was of 10.55 dBi, with a bandwidth of 7.23 GHz, covering the ISM 60 GHz Band, and an increase of less than 10% in total patch dimension. For Koch fractal levels 0 (square), a polarization close to circular was achieved, with an axial ratio less than 6 at resonant frequencies. © 2018 IEEE.
