This paper introduces a Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) setup to explore the integration of an Offshore Wind Power Plant (WPP) with an Oil & Gas platform. The platform is represented through a model of its power generation system, which comprises a Gas Turbine (GT) employing the Rowen Model. The loads are modeled using a passive diode rectifier and a controllable load. The WPP incorporates a Type-4 Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) equipped with a full-scale Back-to-Back (BTB) Converter and two distinct control philosophies. The first control philosophy follows the Grid-Following (GFL) approach, reminiscent of older control systems that tend to degrade power quality within power grids. The second philosophy employs a Grid-Forming (GFM) strategy, which can help to mitigate the adverse effects of integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The power system's behavior is simulated using the Real-Time Simulator (RTS) HIL 602+ from Typhoon-HIL, with the control strategies implemented in the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) TMS320F28379D - F28379D LaunchPad of Texas Instruments (TI). The validity of the CHIL setup is verified through load step tests, assessing the performance of the control systems. The results from the tests reveal that the GFM control strategy can enhance the system stability while also providing valuable ancillary services such as frequency and voltage regulation. © 2024 IEEE.

Waste characterization is essential in planning to reduce waste, create recycling programs and properly use public funds. Traditionally, waste characterization is successfully performed by on-site sampling. This monitoring requires specialized professionals following safety protocols to decrease the health risks associated with the waste handling. However, on-site sampling is susceptible to restrictions in mandatory quarantine situations. Here we show the possibility of using Artificial Intelligence applied to waste management. We identified an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model fed by combination of population, Gross Domestic Product, Potable Water Supply and Sanitation System data that could be used to fill gaps related to the pandemic period. The modified model predictions were successful due to the adaptive capacity of the ANN-based models. Our results demonstrate that ANN can be used in contingency plans to predict the gravimetric composition and specific weight of Municipal Solid Waste, based on strategically chosen socioeconomic information. We anticipate that our model will be a starting point for more sophisticated computational models. It will allow not only the filling of gaps but also the use for auditing, because it allows analyzing the consistency of gravimetric composition and specific weight data provided by third parties. © 2023 The Authors

Data selection can be used in conjunction with adaptive filtering algorithms to avoid unnecessary weight updating and thereby reduce computational overhead. This paper presents a novel correntropy-based data selection method as an alternative to conventional data selection mechanisms based on squared error values. We developed a variable correntropy sensing algorithm to maximize the instantaneous correntropy function for the Gaussian kernel function to mitigate the impact of impulse noise and other forms of noise that can be disregarded in data selection. The proposed data selection mechanism can be implemented with any adaptive filtering algorithm. In simulations, the proposed method (implemented with the least mean squared algorithm) outperformed comparable error-based data selection schemes in terms of hit rate and miss rate, and the resulting weight updating ratio was close to the expected weight updating ratio. © 2023 IEEE. Purpose: The article proposes an automated method for estimating mean scatterer spacing (MSS) in biological tissues using ultrasound signals. It employs singular spectrum analysis (SSA) with a novel entropy-based criterion to enhance accuracy and eliminate the need for manual parameter tuning. The method is validated using both simulated and real signals, demonstrating its effectiveness in detecting microstructural changes in tissues. Methods: The proposed SSA + entropy method estimates the MSS from ultrasound signals using SSA combined with a relative entropy-based criterion. This approach determines the optimal number of eigenvector pairs to reconstruct the periodic part of the signal by identifying the minimum in the entropy curve—a point that corresponds to the number of underlying periodic components, even in noisy conditions. For experimental validation, ex vivo bovine skeletal muscle was analyzed. RF data were collected at a controlled temperature of using a 3.5-MHz transducer. The MSS results obtained via SSA were also independently verified using microscopy and image analysis of muscle fiber spacing, confirming the effectiveness of the entropy-based SSA approach. Results: The MSS estimation method's accuracy decreases as jitter or Ad noise levels increase, with the method performing well when the estimated MSS is within 10% of the true value. Additionally, the standard deviation of MSS estimates increases as Ad levels and jitter values rise. In phantom experiments, MSS was measured using different transducer frequencies with varying results at each frequency. When applied to ex vivo bovine skeletal muscle tissue, the MSS estimation was validated using both RF and imaging methods, with three consistent groups of MSS values observed, confirming the method's applicability and reliability. One noteworthy solution in the context of more accurate representation of power systems is the use of distributed simulation, such as co-simulation using realtime simulators. Therefore, the electrical connection between the two distributed systems play an important role within this solution, specially in the stability of the simulation. This paper presents an assessment of the interface algorithms utilized in the literature, presenting open-loops transfer functions of this interface algorithms to study the stability of the distributed simulation setup. This methodology was tested with the co-simulation of the well-established system IEEE 9-bus in a real time environment using two OPAL-RT OP5707, and simulation results confirm the proposed analysis. © 2023 IEEE.

Due to the ability to perform various maritime activities flexibly and reduce human life risks, Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicles (ROVs) are increasingly used in most offshore applications. The demand for more complex missions has increased the capabilities of ROVs in their operations. Because it is a robust and rigid system, this type of robot may not be effective in certain missions where monitoring in narrow and difficult-to-access places is required. The idea is to create a more flexible and compact three-degrees-of-freedom robot. This robot can help the offshore industry, marine biologists, and researchers in marine life investigation. The reason is that the prototype is more similar to a fish, which would avoid scaring the other specimens, thus not harming the environment. Therefore, this research project intends to develop a low-cost underwater robot modeling applied to an embedded system capable of monitoring information on the seafloor. The results are still preliminary, but they already indicate the possibility of inserting the system in a test environment closer to the real one. ©2023 IEEE.

The development of intelligent techniques based on real-time monitoring for machining applications is one of the challenges of Industry 4.0, as in the Aerospace Industry. Drilling is the most used process before the assembly of airplane sheets, that nowadays are composed of different layers of materials with different optimized cutting conditions. The fault diagnosis during drilling stack materials is important to reduce cost and improve the process quality. Using a machine-tool, it is important that the fault diagnoser does not use a large amount of memory and be capable of detecting faults in a fast manner. In this paper, we propose a timed automaton model representing the drilling process of a Titanium plate on a CNC machine, which is suitable for fault diagnosis without any additional sensors. The diagnoser uses only the spindle power and Z axis displacement read directly from the system controller. The target faults in this case are: (i) excessive tool-wear or tool breakage;(ii) the tool finds an off-centered hole while producing a blind-hole;(iii) the tool finds an under layer of a different material, as it occurs in a bi-layer material;and (iv) the plate thickness is below the desired one and a though hole is produced. The results show that the model is capable of identifying all faults and it could be used to alert a problem on the sequence of machining holes in the industry. © 2023 Elsevier B.V..
