This paper presents three effective proposals for a twostage algorithm for one-microphone reverberant speech enhancement. The original algorithm is divided into two blocks: one that deals with the coloration effect, due to the early reflections, and the other for reducing the long-term reverberation. The proposed modifications consider changing the linearprediction model order, the adaptation stepsize and stop criterion for the first algorithm stage. All the modifications are evaluated by a perceptual-quality measure specific for the speechreverberation context. Experimental results for a 200-signal database show that the proposed improvements yielded an increase of 12% in perceptual measure and a reduction of about 96% in the computation cost when compared to the original framework. This contribution presents low computational complexity versions of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation scheme for the implementation of clustered-OFDM systems for data transmission in the passband frequency. Among the proposed schemes, which are named Hermitian symmetric OFDM (HS-OFDM) I and HS-OFDM II, the HS-OFDM II can offer computational complexity reduction in comparison with the single side-band OFDM (SSB-OFDM), OFDM, and HS-OFDM systems when the length of the OFDM symbol increases. Results show that all simulated schemes can provide the same BER performance in PLC channel. Additionally, HS-OFDM I has a lower complexity than traditional HS-OFDM, and HS-OFDM II further reduces the complexity and achieves the lowest complexity implementation among the five schemes. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper describes an investigation about how to use a kind of electrostatic generator known as “doubler of electricity” as a practical micropower generator. The device has a structure that is amenable to miniaturized construction as a MEMS device powered by ambient vibration. A simple battery charger that does not require any control circuit is studied, and the inherent instability of the device is exploited to allow greater power output, with experimental results of a large scale proto-type presented.

The Ray Tracing rendering algorithm can produce high-fidelity images of 3-D scenes, including shadow effects, as well as reflections and transparencies. This is currently done at a processing speed of at most 30 frames per second. Therefore, actual implementations of the algorithm are not yet suitable for interactive real-time rendering, which is required in games and virtual reality based applications. Fortunately, the algorithm allows for massive parallelization of its computations. In this paper, we present a parallel architecture for ray tracing based on a uniform spatial subdivision of the scene and exploiting an embedded computation of ray-triangle intersections. This approach allows for a significant acceleration of intersection computations, as well as, a reduction of the total number of the required intersections checks. Furthermore, it allows for these checks to be performed in parallel and in advance for each ray. In this paper we discuss and analyze an ASIP-based implementation using FPGAs and a GPGPU-based parallel implementation of the proposed architecture. The performance of both implementations are reported and compared." © 2011 IEEE.

This demonstration will show an electronic version of the classical "doubler of electricity", a simple electrostatic generator that can be used for energy harvesting from vibrational sources. A high-voltage prototype built to validate the concept and study the properties of the device will be demonstrated. Other doublers, including a higher power version with rotating motion, will be demonstrated too.

Effective exploitation of the application-specific parallel patterns and computation operations through their direct implementation in hardware is the base for construction of high-quality application-specific (re-) configurable application specific instruction set processors (ASIPs) and hardware accelerators for modern highly-demanding applications. Although it receives a lot of attention from the researchers and practitioners, a very important problem of hardware reuse in ASIP and accelerator synthesis is clearly underestimated and does not get enough attention in the published research. This paper is an effect of an industry and academic collaborative research. It analyses the problem of hardware sharing, shows its high practical relevance, as well as a big influence of hardware sharing on the major circuit and system parameters, and its importance for the multi-objective optimization and tradeoff exploitation. It also demonstrates that the state-of-the-art synthesis tools do not sufficiently address this problem and gives several guidelines related to enhancement of the hardware reuse. © 2011 IEEE.

Future cellular networks are facing crucial architecture changes to cope with high throughput, energy and cost-efficiency demands. Emerging solutions are small-cells and femto-cells which will coexist with classical macro-cells technology. In these heterogeneous networks, we study the joint service pricing and bandwidth allocation problem at the operator level. Each user selfishly adopts the service that optimizes its satisfaction. The user-level problem is formulated as a general non-atomic game. The Wardrop equilibrium is proven to exist and an analytical expression is provided for arbitrary number of services. The equilibria multiplicity, the influence of pricing and bandwidth allocation policies are investigated numerically.

This article presents a low-complexity parametric algorithm for the estimation of the carrier frequency offset (CFO) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. The proposed algorithm is equivalent to the Unitary ESPRIT algorithm, originally devised for estimating the direction-of-arrival of a wave front, now applied to the CFO scenario. It is verified that the proposed algorithm reduces the overall computational complexity in around 40%, while sustaining the error-rate performance achieved by the standard ESPRIT algorithm.

Real time rendering of three-dimensional scenes in Ray Tracing is a hard problem. However, parallel implementations have been enabling real time performance, as the algorithm can be highly parallelized. Thus, a custom parallel design in hardware is likely to achieve a good performance. In this paper, we further improve the GridRT architecture overall performance by embedding the ray-triangle intersection computation into the precessing elements that form the architecture. Low cost and high rendering performance are the main concerns in this novel design. The results show that the execution time of each intersection computation is reduced by at least 50%, while the area cost is practically unchanged or even reduced when compared to the original GridRT implementation.
