Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are the best technology for supplying and storing energy for electric mobility systems. Despite that, this technology is sensitive to abuses that can compromise its lifetime and cause fire and explosion risks. In this context, if LIB is not correctly controlled, some abuses, such as overcharging (OC) and over-discharging (OD), can be observed and provoke a loss of capacity. Therefore, this work presented the application of several experiments in cells, of the NMC type, under OC and the combination of OC and OD. The results indicated that cells charged until 4.4 and 4.5 V and discharged until 3.0 V do not lose capacity for twenty-five cycles, but more cycles should be done to understand the impact over time. On the other side, the cell charged until 4.6 and 4.8 V had its security protection romped in the fourth charging cycle, and the cell charged until 5.0 V had its safety compromised in the first charging cycle. Conversely, cells with a combination of OC and OD were more compromised. In this context, while a cell is submitted only with OC and does not lose capacity, a cell under OC and then under OD had its protection romped in the third charging cycle. Cells under 4.6 V and 4.8 V lost capacity during the second charging cycle. In conclusion, OC provokes a high level of degradation in the cell, but the combination of OC and OD causes even more degradation.

Wireless communication via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has drawn a great deal of attention due to its flexibility in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) communications. However, in complex urban and dynamic environments, the movement of UAVs can be blocked by trees and high-rise buildings that obstruct directional paths. This problem can be effectively addressed by employing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). To achieve this goal, accurate channel estimation in RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications is crucial. This paper proposes an accurate channel estimation model using long short-term memory (LSTM) for a multi-user RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications system. Simulation results showed that LSTM can effectively improve the channel estimation performance of RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications.

Capacitor placement in electric power systems is an effective way to minimize energy losses, especially in distribution systems, where power losses are more than transmission ones. On the other hand, time-varying load levels affect energy losses amount in such networks. Therefore, load profile has an important role in determining the amount of power losses and the optimal place of shunt capacitors in radial feeders. However, embedding load variability in the capacitor placement problem enhances the computational burden and processing time, while its ignorance leads to inaccurate calculation of energy losses and subsequent optimal locations of capacitor banks. Hence, most of specialized studies have ignored load changes in their capacitor placement models because of computational burden and processing time increase. Accordingly, the present paper intent to evaluate the effect of consumption patterns on capacitor placement proposals in order to understand the importance of load variability consideration in reducing power losses through reactive power compensation. The analysis has been carried out using a mathematical programming language in several distribution systems.

Vocational education assumes a pivotal role in cultivating competent intermediaries proficient in translating theoretical knowledge into practical applications. At the core of industrial automation lies the programmable Logic Controller (PLC), a specialized digital computer that interfaces with sensors, switches, and actuators to execute real-time control programs, thus facilitating meticulous industrial processes. This study concentrates on the practical deployment of a two-floor elevator system utilizing the OMRON CP1E N30 PLC. Elevators, integral to contemporary structures, mandate precision for secure vertical conveyance. Leveraging input signals from elevator buttons, sensors, and switches, the PLC orchestrates efficient motor control and dependable door operations. This hands-on application underscores the PLC’s significance within real-time control contexts. Nonetheless, Vocational Higher Education graduates frequently grapple with the challenge of transitioning to industry settings due to limited practical exposure. This partnership harmonizes with the center’s objective of enriching vocational education by integrating sophisticated technologies like PLCs, equipping the workforce with the acumen to bridge the gap between theoretical foundations and the pragmatic demands of industry.

This paper proposed a novel landing platform with wireless power transfer (WPT) to charge multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) without restrictions on landing locations or alignment. A transmitter is designed using wires to charge a wide area. To overcome the disadvantages of system made by wires, a grid pattern transmitter and double power line are proposed. These structures provide multiple charging with free positioning of receivers and excite the transmitter lines in wide area properly. The optimized system is composed of 0.15m square cells, providing a 0.9 m by 0.9 m charging area. By experiment, it can efficiently charge four 0.1 m square receivers located anywhere in transmitter. The overall efficiency of four receivers is 37.5%. Also, the experimental results verify that it is unnecessary to align the receiver within the cell, as it has a 2.62% error due to rotation and a 2.94 % error due to position within the cell. © 2025 IEEE.

We propose Text2Scene, a method to automatically create realistic textures for virtual scenes composed of multiple objects. Guided by a reference image and text descriptions, our pipeline adds detailed texture on labeled 3D geometries in the room such that the generated colors respect the hierarchical structure or semantic parts that are often composed of similar materials. Instead of applying flat stylization on the entire scene at a single step, we obtain weak semantic cues from geometric segmentation, which are further clarified by assigning initial colors to segmented parts. Then we add texture details for individual objects such that their projections on image space exhibit feature embedding aligned with the embedding of the input. The decomposition makes the entire pipeline tractable to a moderate amount of computation resources and memory. As our framework utilizes the existing resources of image and text embedding, it does not require dedicated datasets with high-quality textures designed by skillful artists. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first practical and scalable approach that can create detailed and realistic textures of the desired style that maintain structural context for scenes with multiple objects. © 2023, CC BY.

Distilling BlackBox to Interpretable models for Efficient Transfer Learning

Building generalizable AI models is one of the primary challenges in the healthcare domain. While radiologists rely on generalizable descriptive rules of abnormality, Neural Network (NN) models suffer even with a slight shift in input distribution (e.g., scanner type). Fine-tuning a model to transfer knowledge from one domain to another requires a significant amount of labeled data in the target domain. In this paper, we develop an interpretable model that can be efficiently fine-tuned to an unseen target domain with minimal computational cost. We assume the interpretable component of NN to be approximately domain-invariant. However, interpretable models typically underperform compared to their Blackbox (BB) variants. We start with a BB in the source domain and distill it into a mixture of shallow interpretable models using human-understandable concepts. As each interpretable model covers a subset of data, a mixture of interpretable models achieves comparable performance as BB. Further, we use the pseudo-labeling technique from semi-supervised learning (SSL) to learn the concept classifier in the target domain, followed by fine-tuning the interpretable models in the target domain. We evaluate our model using a real-life large-scale chest-X-ray (CXR) classification dataset. Graph-based data present unique challenges and opportunities for machine learning. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), and especially those algorithms that capture graph topology through message passing for neighborhood aggregation, have been a leading solution. However, these networks often require substantial computational resources and may not optimally leverage the information contained in the graph’s topology, particularly for large-scale or complex *** propose Topology Coordinate Neural Network (TCNN) and Directional Virtual Coordinate Neural Network (DVCNN) as novel and efficient alternatives to message passing GNNs, that directly leverage the graph’s topology, sidestepping the computational challenges presented by competing algorithms. Our proposed methods can be viewed as a reprise of classic techniques for graph embedding for neural network feature engineering, but they are novel in that our embedding techniques leverage ideas in Graph Coordinates (GC) that are lacking in current *** results, benchmarked against the Open Graph Benchmark Leaderboard, demonstrate that TCNN and DVCNN achieve competitive or superior performance to message passing GNNs. For similar levels of accuracy and ROC-AUC, TCNN and DVCNN need far fewer trainable parameters than contenders of the OGBN Leaderboard. The proposed TCNN architecture requires fewer parameters than any neural network method currently listed in the OGBN Leaderboard for both OGBN-Proteins and OGBN-Products datasets. Conversely, our methods achieve higher performance for a similar number of trainable parameters. These results hold across diverse datasets and edge features, underscoring the robustness and generalizability of our methods. By providing an efficient and effective alternative to message passing GNNs, our work expands the toolbox of techniques for graph-based machine learning. The problems of high voltage equipment usually come from the imperfection of solid insulation, which may be caused by poor workmanship during cable installation, leading to multi-void inside solid insulation and subsequently partial discharge when that cable is put in service. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the discharge phenomena of multi-void inside solid insulation by creating artificial defects in epoxy resin and testing under AC and very low frequency voltage sources. The test object consists of a single void with different void diameters and multi-void created by injecting the air voids at atmospheric pressure into epoxy resin. The partial discharge inside a single void and multi-void is detected by using a conventional and unconventional sensor. The results of PD measurement are represented in the phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) and several partial discharge parameters, such as PD charge magnitude and PD repetition rate. In addition, the results are analyzed to observe the impact of the multi-void with different conditions such as variable void diameter, the thickness of epoxy resin, type of voltage source, and PD sensor. The test can specify trends toward breakdown and the severity of multi-void inside solid insulation. © 2022 IEEE.
