Assessment theory has expanded from traditional examinations that are focused on the result, to include the process of learning. ABET program evaluators (PEVs) have been instructed to look for documentation of student learning in the samples of student work required of institutions seeking accreditation. Educational theory supports this change as a positive shift to promote student success. This paper will explore the techniques which institutions can use to successfully exemplify the achievements and transformation of their students, which will meet the expectations of ABET evaluators. The benefits of this new approach, for faculty, students and the program will be highlighted. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

This article presents a voltage-mode multi-function filter performing completely standard functions: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, band-reject and all-pass functions, current controlled differential voltage current conveyors (CCDVCCs). The features of the circuit are that: the quality factor and pole frequency can be tuned independently via the input bias currents: the circuit description is very simple, consisting of merely 2 CCDVCCs, 1 resistor and 2 capacitors. Only one external resistor and without any component matching conditions, the proposed circuit is very appropriate to further develop into an integrated circuit. Additionally, each function response can be selected by suitably selecting input signals with digital method. The PSPICE simulation results are depicted. The given results agree well with the theoretical anticipation. ©2009 IEEE.

This paper introduces a granular, interval-based evolving modeling (IBeM) approach to develop system models from a stream of data. IBeM is an evolving rule-based modeling scheme that gradually adapts its structure (information granules and rule base) and rules antecedent and consequent parameters from data (inductive learning). Its main purpose is continuous learning, self-organization, and adaptation to unknown environments. The IBeM approach develops global model of a system using a fast, one-pass learning algorithm, and modest memory requirements. To illustrate the effectiveness of the approach, the paper considers actual time series forecasting applications concerning electricity load and stream flow forecasting.

Evolving granular classification neural networks

The objective of this study is to introduce the concept of evolving granular neural networks (eGNN) and to develop a framework of information granulation and its role in the online design of neural networks. The suggested eGNN are neural models supported by granule-based learning algorithms whose aim is to tackle classification problems in continuously changing environments. eGNN are constructed from streams of data using fast incremental learning algorithms. eGNN models require a relatively small amount of memory to perform classification tasks. Basically, they try to find information occurring in the incoming data using the concept of granules and T-S neurons as basic processing elements. The main characteristics of eGNN models are continuous learning, self-organization, and adaptation to unknown environments. Association rules and parameters can be easily extracted from its structure at any step during the evolving process. The rule base gives a granular description of the behavior of the system in the input space together with the associated classes. To illustrate the effectiveness of the approach, the paper considers the Iris and Wine benchmark problems.

This article presents a current-mode universal biquadratic filter performing completely standard functions: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, band-reject and all-pass functions, based-on dual-output current controlled current conveyor (DO-CCCII). The features of the circuit are that: the quality factor and pole frequency can be tuned orthogonally via the input bias currents: the circuit description is very simple, consisting of merely 4 DO-CCCIIs and 2 grounded capacitors. Without any external resistors and require component matching conditions, the proposed circuit is very suitable to further develop into an integrated circuit. The PSPICE simulation results are depicted. The given results agree well with the theoretical anticipation. The maximum power consumption is approximately 1.16mW at ±1.5V power supply voltages. ©2009 IEEE.

A new color image coding technique is proposed in this paper. The technique is based on the efficient grey-scaled wavelet-based image coding, the context adaptive wavelet difference reduction - CAWDR. The coder exploits not only compactness and self-similarities of wavelet transform in each color component, but also the dependency between the color components. The context adaptive arithmetic coder is implemented to the encoded bit stream. The significant coefficient quantizations for all color components are performed before the refinement pass in each bit-plane. This single bit stream of encoded image has embedded property and exact rate control without explicit information. The performance comparison is also presented in the paper. The proposed coder typically has 0.3 - 1 dB higher average PSNR than that of JPEG2000.

Recent research has shown that, although stereotypes prevail about women's attrition rates in undergraduate engineering, there is no gender gap in the persistence of engineering students to the eighth semester of study. How "persistence" is measured, however, is of methodological concern as we look at what constitutes success. "Persistence" is reported in the literature in various ways as approximate measures of graduation, which is the ultimate goal. To examine the relationship between measures of persistence and graduation, analyses were conducted using MIDFIELD (the Multiple-Institution Database for Investigating engineering Longitudinal Development). The database includes student records from 75,686 first-time-in-college students matriculating in engineering at one of nine public universities in the southeastern United States. We found gender and institutional differences in the six-year graduation rates of students who persist to the eighth semester. An important result of this work is demonstrating how studying different outcomes can tell different stories about the same students: studying eight-semester persistence for aggregate populations can provide a reasonable surrogate for graduation, but may paint an overly optimistic picture at some institutions, and the study of both outcomes can provide new and valuable information about the student experience. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

Secure buildings are currently protected from unauthorized access by a variety of devices. Nowadays, there are many kinds of devices to guarantee the building security such as PIN pads, keys both conventional and electronic, identity cards, cryptographic and dual control procedures. In this paper, voice-based biometric system is introduced for access control. The ability to verify the identity of a person by analyzing his/her speech, or speaker verification, is an attractive and relatively unobtrusive means of providing security for admission into an important or secured place. An individualpsilas voice cannot be stolen, lost, forgotten, guessed, or impersonated with accuracy. In the field of speaker verification, the main objective is to achieve the highest possible classification accuracy. The proposed system focused on combining the classification scores. In score fusion, each feature set is modeled separately, and the output score of the classifiers are combined to give the overall match score. Furthermore, for each classifier score, an a priori weight is set based on the level of confidence of the feature set and the classifier. The classifiers involved in this work are Gaussian mixture models (GMMs), multilayer feedforward network (MFN) and support vector machines (SVMs). Experimental result confirms that in terms of false acceptance rate (FAR) and false rejection rate (FRR), the fusion classifiers is effective to use in the proposed system.

For solutions of Laplace equation in non-conducting areas and Helmholtz equation for electric field of a screen, the second Maxwell equation is used and boundary conditions for magnetic field are determined. These conditions provide some parameters describing magnetic field inside, outside and in the screening shell of a single-wire transmission line with non-coaxial phase conductors. The components of this field are expressed in terms of the modified Bessel functions in cylindrical coordinates. The solution respects the effects of the reverse reaction magnetic field of eddy currents induced in the screening shell as a result of the internal proximity effect. It allows calculating the total magnetic field (of elliptic character) everywhere in the cross-section of the screened bifilar transmission line. Evaluation of the influence of the shell on the total magnetic field of the line is performed by comparing the modulus of this field with the modulus of field calculated for unscreened line along the internal and external surfaces of the shell, and inside the shell. © 2009 Institute of Thermomechanics AS CR, v.v.i.
